The document discusses the effects of poor time management on grade 10 students' academic performance.

Poor time management can negatively impact students' academic performance as it leads to lack of preparation for exams and inability to meet important deadlines for assignments.

Factors of time management include setting priorities, planning activities, scheduling important dates and managing distractions effectively.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In today’s fast-paced world, the individual's possibility of using time efficiently

is decreasing day by day. The tasks expected from people at work are increasing every

year. All these changes can be tolerated up to a point; however, that the rate of change

is rising in itself reveals the insufficiency of time at a certain level (Uluşahin, 1999).

Given that every individual has the same amount of time at their disposal, in fact, many

complain they do not have enough time. Yet some manage to do more work compared

to others in the same amount of time.

To understand how this is possible is an important issue (Keenan, 1996). People

who know how to use their time in the correct place and at appropriate times know their

priorities and make plans to realize them accordingly. As for planning, this makes two

contributions in arranging an individual’s life. Although the time shown on the clock is

linear and sequential, each second is not more valuable than the other. However, the

time we feel and are experiencing is quality time. In the time referred to here it is not

important how long it lasts; it is more important how much merit we obtain

(Sabuncuoğlu et al., 2010 p 6).

To Uğur (2000 p 18), time management is the effort of using time efficiently as

an essential resource to reach aims and targets. Efil (2000) define it as an individual’s

power to determine a particular target among various priorities, most of which are vital,

and achieving the target(s) determined, and also the skill of using a certain time period

most efficiently to achieve a goal. Özgen (2000) defines it as planning time that enables
3

us to carry out goals, targets and activities within our social life. Alay and Koçak (2003)

state that comprehending and implementing time management does not solve the

problem for individuals in itself, but it does help individuals reach effective solutions

and consequences.

Statement of the Problem

The main reason why this research is conducted is to identify, determine and

know the effects of poor time management to Grade 10 students’ academic performance

specifically in Palompon National High School, this study aims to answer the following

questions:

1. What are the student’s perception of control over time in achieving better academic

performance?

2. How does the application of time management behaviour affects students in

completing its task on a set deadline?

3. How does enhancing effective time management skill help in increasing students’

academic achievement?

Significance of the study

The result of this study will be beneficial in determining the effects of poor time

management to Grade 10 students’ academic performance. This study is specified and

important to the following:

Grade 10 students. To help these students be aware and educated about the

consequences of poor time management to their academic performance.

Parents. To help parents guide their students how to properly manage their time

in order to attain better academic performance at school.

4

Teacher. To help teachers assist and guide their students manage their school

related tasks in relation to their academic performance with proper management of time.

Definition of terms

The following terms are defined in the context of the study.

Time management. It refers to the way students manage their time in order to

have better academic performance which is invaluable for academic success.

Academic performance. It is the measure of how a student will do in an

educational setting.

Time. It is the basis on how students measure its list of priorities in doing school

projects and other specified tasks on a certain period.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter will define, discuss and determine further about the effects of poor

time management to Grade 10 students’ academic performance. It will also include the

results of some previous studies and ideas of other researchers that are beneficial in

proving the importance of conducting this study.

Conceptual Literature

Time management is a skill that every student should not only know but also

apply. A lot of university students complain about running out of time because they are

not able to make it before the deadline. Time management is extremely important,

especially when it comes to university students because it will boost their grades and

enhance their productivity (Laurie and Hellsten, 2002)

Effective time management behaviour enables students to address their current

tasks, rank them in terms of importance and complete them by set deadlines. Important

skills to incorporate are setting goals and focusing on how to reach the desired outcome

(Eccles, 1983). This makes the subjects think about not only tasks in the moment, but

ones that affect the future as well. By identifying what they want long-term, they are

able to identify their present needs in order to achieve their goals.

Furthermore, according to Campbell and Suenson (1992), time management

refers to the way students manage their time in order to have better academic

performance which is invaluable for academic success.

6

As to the management of time, Erdem (1999) defines it as the implementation

process of management functions such as planning, organizing and controlling one's

own activities in order to reach targets in an individual's private and working life in the

most efficient and effective way.

While Sayan (2005), defines time management as an opportunity to provide

more time for better planning of a career, preparing for the future, reading more and

learning more, following developments and improvements in technology, sparing more

time for family members and acquaintances, entertaining, thinking, creating new ideas

and starting new projects.

In general, people are more likely to adapt time management skills in their

behaviour after receiving time management training, which affects the amount of time

that subjects dedicate to high-priority activities. Once individuals understand how to

identify tasks as high priority, they then are able to rank their activities in terms of

importance.

Research Literature

It is commonly assumed that students who spend more time studying will

receive better grades than students who have limited time to study. This belief is

supported by McFadden and Dart (1992) who reported an influence of total study time

on expected grade outcome. Similarly, a recent survey showed that 34 percent of

college freshman dedicated at least six hours per week of their free time to homework

and studying (Nonis and Hudson, 2006). Students often feel that the amount of time

they spent studying justifies good grades because they focus on how long they studied

instead of how well they remembered the material.

7

Most students do not use such measures like planners to keep track of tasks and

often feel like they have forgotten something. Weissberg, et. al. (1982) surveyed

students and reported that 67 percent identified effective time management as their

greatest need while in college. Even though ways to practice time management can be

taught, students cannot apply the skills unless they have consciously repeated and

incorporated the skills into their behaviour on a regular basis.

In reviewing the literature, it is often suggested that students receive better

grades if they have more free time for studying and completing projects on time. Other

common assumptions suggest that students who practice time management behaviour,

such as making to-do lists and setting goals, will also receive higher grades, or that

students who spend more time working, either part-time or full-time, will have lower

higher grades than students who have more free time.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the procedure and methods in conducting the study. This

includes the discussion of research respondents, research environment, data gathering

procedure and scope and delimitation.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study are the Grade 10 students of Palompon National

High School. The researchers utilized the random sampling technique in which 20

students from different sections of Grade 10 were selected to participate in this study.

The researchers believed that they are the most appropriate participants in this study in

the basis of students’ time management behaviour in attaining better academic

performance at school.

Research Environment

The study will be conducted in Palompon National High School year 2019-

2020. It is located at Central II, Oval East, Palompon, Leyte. There are four sections in

Grade 10 namely France, England, Germany and Italy, with a population of 206

students in this year level.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher will conduct an interview to the Grade 10 students of Palompon

National High School. Before the actual interview, the researchers will ask permission

to the respondent. Then the researchers will conduct an interview to gather the needed

information.
9

Scope and Delimitation

The study will deal on determining the effects of poor time management of (20)

Grade 10 students of Palompon National High School S.Y. 2019-2020 attempts to

prove whether poor time management may or may not affect students’ grades.
