School Life Experience

Working students take on jobs to help pay for tuition and support their families financially. This comes with challenges as it is difficult to balance work, school, and personal life. Studies show only about 50% of working students complete their degree programs. Reasons for working include rising costs of education and living expenses outpacing family incomes. While work can teach time management, it can also negatively impact academics if too many hours are worked per week. Schools should be flexible to support working students in balancing responsibilities.

SCHOOL LIFE EXPERIENCE: LIVED EXPERIENCE AMONG WORKING STUDENTS OF

COLLEGE DEPARTMENT IN DR. CARLOS S. LANTING COLLEGE

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and
essentials for a minimum standard of living. Schools are facing great challenges to improve
students’ low academic performances. This is mainly because most of the students in that
category are from low-income families. Some of them have to work after school to help their
parents. As a result, the students feel tired at school and cannot focus on their studies.
A working student is a person who has work and at the same time go to school as a student. A
working student is responsible enough to handle their life being a student. They will know how
hard to handle a job while they need to go school.
A study done by Dr. Godfrey entitled Problem of Working Student the financial burden of
education fees are rising. Due to the increasing price of tuition fees, school fees and other
education finances, families tend to face financial crisis particularly on managing the budget of
the family basing on their family income these include the budget for food, education, electricity
bill, and other financial bills. The family is unable to manage it all since their income is incapable
of affording those bills especially the valuable price of education finances. Considering those
facts, students affected by the crisis experienced by their family. Students will be necessitated
to work while studying it’s either a part-time or a full-time working student. Students jobs have
become sort of trend among students around the world primarily college students whereas the
term that suits this trend is “earn and learn” policy. Another factor is students who have no
college tuition and finances are more high-priced and costly than high school learners. In short,
relatives or family who aspire to fulfil studies prefer to be a working students unless they’re
students who comprise scholarship.
According to Furr and Elling (2000), 29% of students working 30-39 hours per week and 39% of
those students working full time indicated that work had a negative and frequent impact on their
academic progress. As more students are employed, they face having to balance their
academic requirements, extracurricular activities, and employment responsibilities to maintain
their lifestyle.
A Filipino anonymous blogger wrote a blog entitled “Life of Filipino Teenager as Working
Students” stated that the life of a Filipino student who works for their tuition fees and other
expenses is not easy. It takes a lot of courage, strength, and positivity before they can be called
a working student. They need to manage and balance their schedule for them to work while
study. Filipino teenagers are more eager to finish their school and have a degree so that they
can have a better job and a better future ahead.
The aim of the study is to develop the knowledge and understanding of the phenomenon school
life quality for working students by taking the perspective of the students themselves.
Significance of the study
Taking on a part-time job while pursuing a degree is hard work, but the benefits are typically
greater than the amount of a paycheck. Students who work during their senior high school
careers may develop better time management skills than their counterparts because they have
to apply it to their daily lives. They earn money that can be used for fun or for tuition, while
gaining experience in the workplace that will be attractive to future employers after graduation.
This study will be beneficial to the following:
Working Student- This study serves as their guides on how to become good worker on the
duties and at the same time responsible students
Parents- It is important to help them and support their child to educate them and to guide them
also
Teachers- help you find the solutions to particular problems arising in your academic
performance
Future Researchers- This enable them to look for strong evidence and responses from the
respondents it improve their research skills
Objective of the study
The aim of the study is to contribute the knowledge development about quality of school life for
working students in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College
1. To know the reasons why students work while studying
2. To determine the time management of the working students in terms of:
 School
 Work
3. Identify the struggles of a working students in school and work
Scope and Delimitation
The study focused much on the reason why BS psychology of Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College
work while studying and the relation of Academic Performance of selected students.
It only delimits of knowing why students need to have a part-time job while studying.
Definition of terms
Financial Crisis- is any of a broad variety or situations in which some financial assets suddenly
lose a large part of their nominal value
Working Student- is a person who has a work at the same time go to school as a student.
Academic Performance- is the extent to which student, teacher, or institution has attained their
short or long-term educational goals.
Perception- is the process of getting, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter discusses the likely reasons for the poor academic performance of student’s
assistants. It is typical nowadays for students to work while studying to pursue their dreams life.
Expenses for college education are never cheaper as generation passes. This study includes
the review of related literature and studies which the researchers have perused to shed light on
the topic under study.
Foreign
Barke (2002) find someone previous studies also reported the presence of financial pressures is
one of the treasure is one of the reasons they are looking for a part time position.
According to the research conducted by watts and Pickering (2002) while working part time and
studying full time has a variety of positive outcomes respondents generally viewed part time
employment as a necessity to survive in the contemporary higher education sphere. In Manthei
and Gilmore’s (2005) study it is said that the money earned from part time employment was
typically spent on essential living expenses.
Ali (2010) stressed that the combination of working and studying together is the key to success
and is the pillar on which ones future and career depends.
Jogaratnam and Buchanan (2004) stated that new students who choose to do part-time job
while having full-time academic load were most likely to suffer from stress. Kathryn C. Monahan,
research scientist at the University of Washington and the lead researcher of this study,
suggests that parents, policymakers and educators should monitor the number of working hours
of the students.
Curtis and Shani (2002) believed that students who are working part-time will most likely miss
lecturers and feel that they could achieve higher grades had they not been working. For that
reason, universities should be aware of contemporary student lives. They should introduce an
element of flexibility as a means of structuring assignments and course requirements to support
this (Curtis, 2007).

Local
Veronica V. Rillorta (2008) published an article regarding working student entitled “Youngblood
Working student”. She is a high school honor student but was unable to go to college because
of their poverty. She worked as waitress and saleslady but stop due to some problems. It was
stated that she was recommended by her high school batch mate as a working student and she
had her chance to continue college. It is hard for her but it is her opportunity to continue her
faded dreams, she had manage to balanced work and study.

An article written by a Filipino anonymous blogger wrote an article entitled “A student’s

sacrifice”. In her article, it was testified that being a working student requires sacrifice to achieve
your aspirations. She said that you might even sacrifice your family, boyfriend/girlfriend, friends,
and your social life. She stated that when you’re a working student, you always need to manage
time and sometimes you even forget to eat and take care of yourself because of your stresses
and depressions as student. You might also forget your health but you need to give up
something to be successful someday.
Lawyer Julito Vitriolo, officer-in-charge at CHED’s office of the executive director stated that
“they need extra income because of the financial crisis.” Vitriolo added that the students are
forced to work because of higher commodity prices and tuition fees.
An article reported by Bernadette Sembrano of ABS-CBN News, entitled “Only half of working
students finish college.” (2010). It was affirmed that about 216,000 students in the country are
currently juggling school and work, according to latest data from the Commission on Higher
Education (CHED). The figure is about 8% of the total number of college students in the
country.
CHED said working students today are mostly into food service, entertainment and sales, apart
from their usual stints as library and research assistants. The CHED said that only 50% of the
working students get to finish college, because not that many can cope up with the hard
situation of being a working student, getting stuck up between work and studies.
Synthesis
The findings of the study synthesized that they choose to work while study because they have a
financial crisis and their parents couldn’t afford the tuition fees in college that’s why their
children forced to work while studying to support themselves and to help their parents to reduce
fees and to achieve their dreams. Some of the working students was unable to continue
studying in college because of financial problem but because of work she was able to continue
her faded dreams.
Theoretical Framework
The grounded theory approach. Focus groups were conducted to allow working students to
elaborate on their college experiences, clarifying issues not easily addressed through surveys.
Two theoretical propositions are offered to describe how working students are constantly
searching for meaningful work as well as meaning in their work. It is important for institutions to
consider work as an educationally purposeful activity outside classroom and to create job
opportunities that benefit students academically, socially and financially.
Human Capital Theory (Becker, 1964), student employment can be a complement to education
due to the additional skills and knowledge obtained while working. Student employment enables
the acquisition of new general and transferable skills such as work values, communication skills,
and a sense of time management.
The Theory of the Allocation of Time (Becker, 1965), the Zero-Sum Theory suggests that
student employment and education are substitutes. It is argued that student employment
strongly constrains students’ use of time: time spent working crowds out time spent on activities
that enhance academic performance
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

Research Design
This chapter presents the methods used by the researchers. The sample interviews,
instruments used by the researchers is applied for the study. The researchers used by
Qualitative Research where interview serves as its main tool. We apply qualitative research
methods because it is useful in discovering the meaning that people give to events that they
experience (Merriam, 1998). Specifically, the phenomenological method was used to
understand how participants make meaning of the phenomenon being studied. The qualitative
research methods used for this study are described further below and included purposive
sampling, interviewing, data gathering and data analysis procedures. Phenomenology is
effective in studying a small number of subjects. In this case, 5 participants to identify the core
of their experiences with the phenomenon.
Synthesis
This study is a Qualitative Research the researcher’s use purposive as a sampling technique
the instrument that we use to gather the data is interview and this is Phenomenology study.
Research Respondents
This study will use of 5 working students from college department in Dr. Carlos S. Lanting
College who experience working while studying.
Research Locale
The study conducted at Dr. Lanting College located at 16 Tandang Sora Avenue, Sangandaan
Novaliches Quezon City. This place was selected for knowing the lived experience of the said
study among college department. We choose this school to be less hassle and to facilitate
communication to those students that we choose.
Research Sampling
The sample use by the researcher’s was purposive as a sampling technique in which they rely
on survey for group of students to their research study each individual is chosen entirely by
chance and each member of the group of student has an equal chance being included in this
sample. Every possible sample of a given size has the same chance of selection, it would be
effective for their research since they have limited number of participants. Researchers use the
sampling technique as they engage the research subject purposively in the entire conduct of the
study.
Research Instruments
Interview
One of the data gathering instrument use is an interview through interview the researchers then
will be able to formulate a question for the interview.
Data Gathering Procedure
1. First the researcher will create a letter for permission to conduct the interview and
the survey questionnaire with the chosen respondents.
2. Second, researcher will formulate question related to the main topic of the research
paper next researcher will analyze how many participants should be required to
gather the information needed to support the study followed choosing the specific
participants needed to answer the purposed questions of the researchers.
3. After that researchers will set a schedule date for the interview and if necessary book
an appointment to the specific respondents to find out their available time after the
data gathering, the researchers compile all the information that will gathered and
create transcript interview to analyze the data provided interviewe.
4. Gathering data will be coded, analyzed and interpreted using appropriate
methodologies.
