AAAWWUBBIS (Subordinating conjunctions)

A subordinate clause—also called a dependent clause—will begin with a subordinating


conjunction and will contain both a subject and a verb.

This combination of words will not form a complete sentence. It will instead make a reader
want additional information to finish the thought.

A dependent clause is a group of words that contains a noun and a verb, but does not contain a
complete thought. A dependent clause depends on the rest of the sentence to make sense. A dependent
clause usually starts with an

AAAWWUBBIS word: As, Although, After, While, When, Unless, Because, Before, If, Since.

Examples of dependent clauses that start with an AAAWWUBBIS word:

As the day ended,


Although I tried to hurry,
After the game was over,
While we ate dinner,
When the bell rang,
Unless the rain stops,
Because the grass is so tall,
Before you go to bed,
If you want to go to the movies,
Since the dog ran away,
None of the above dependent clauses make sense on their own because they don’t express a complete
thought. They depend on something else added after the comma to make sense. The sentences below
are examples of complex

1. As the day ended, the family was gathered around the dinner table.
2. Although I tried to hurry, I didn’t make it to class before the bell.
3. After the game was over, we went to Subway to eat.
4. I've been a dancer since I was young.
5. The children were happy when the show began.
6. Although he worked hard, he couldn’t win the first prize.
7. I waited as my mom paid for the groceries.
8. I will go even if he forbids me.
9. I ran because I was scared.
10. She will not come unless you invite her.
11. We will go running after we tie our shoes.
12. We cannot go skiing although we have skis.
13. When I came in the room, everyone looked at me.
14. Although she is pretty, I don’t like her.
15. We can eat lunch if you like.
16. If it is sunny tomorrow, we can go to the park.
17. Before he contacted me, I was going to call him.
18. I’m not leaving until you say you’re sorry.
19. Will you wait here until I come?
20. I couldn’t go because it was raining.
21. Since the sky is overcast we will cancel the picnic.
22. They say a silent prayer before they start the class.
23. Larry did not intend to stay later unless his employer paid overtime.
24. Do as you have been directed.
