Abstract
The study explores the preference of Internships among the undergraduate students in Odisha.
The research is descriptive in nature. The study was conducted in the cities of Cuttack and
Bhubaneswar. Primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire in google forms,
that elicited responses of students regarding their preferences on internships. A total of 50
responses were collected from various candidates from universities of Cuttack &
Bhubaneshwar cities of Odisha. The study also used several websites as secondary source of
information for extracting details of internship websites, types of internship, advantages and
disadvantages of each type of internship, etc. The data which was collected was analyzed using
mean and were represented using bar graph & pie chart. The findings of the study showcase
that the most preferred internship website is Internshala. The primary reason to apply for
internship is to receive a letter of recommendation or certificate. Most of the respondents
considered work from home and paid internships, did internship in the second year, took advice
from their friends for doing an internship and prefer to do internship during semester break.
Few recommendations were given to the students who are applying for online internships at
various internship platforms based on the findings of the study.

1.1 Introduction of the Study:
Internships are very important, particularly in today's competitive work world. A student who
has internship and work experience upon graduation will be more highly desired by employers
than someone who did not venture into the "work world" at all during college. The first benefit
is that you are able to get work experience in the program you’re studying and you’ll be
building your resume with relevant experience. The network and other relationships a student
can develop through internships compliment the actual work experience they get while
working for a few months during college. Performing well at an internship is a great way to
have a potential job offer before graduation. Internships are becoming more desirable as
students struggle with college costs. The opportunity to possibly earn some money while
earning college credit is huge. The chance to explore careers before getting too far down the
academic path is also a bonus to internships.
➢ To gain experience
You lack experience and this is the only way to get it by doing an internship. You get to see
and experience the different roles that people play in certain companies and see working life
from different perspectives. This is good to take into the working world with you because at
times, you will be asked to do various tasks involving different elements of the company.
Basically, in simple words you will have a complete insight of how a company or an
organization runs.
8|Page
at before. Take these new ideas and skills to your next job and find a way to incorporate them
into any tasks you are given.
➢ Build confidence
Whether it be public speaking, giving presentations or simply suggesting new ideas, internships
will build your confidence which allows you to grow as both a worker and a person. Internships
will help you to build confidence through practice which will also help in your personal growth.
After all, practice makes perfect.
➢ To communicate
Internships require you to both works individually and within a team. You learn to
communicate in new ways to build professional working relationships with people of all ages.
This is great because it allows you to be open to other people’s ideas and to get creative in a
team in order to build better ideas and ultimately, to build a better company.

1.1 Internship:
An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of
time. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills
and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from these placements because they
often recruit employees from their best interns, who have known capabilities, thus saving time
and money in the long run. Internships are usually arranged by third-party organizations which
recruit interns on behalf of industry groups. Rules vary from country to country about when
interns should be regarded as employees. The system can be open to exploitation by
unscrupulous employers.
Internships for professional careers are similar in some ways, but not as rigorous as
apprenticeships for professions, trade, and vocational jobs. Interns may be high school students,
college and university students, or post-graduate adults. These positions may be paid or unpaid
and are temporary.
Typically, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the intern
and the organization. Internships are used to determine if the intern still has an interest in that
field after the real-life experience. In addition, an internship can be used to create a professional
network that can assist with letters of recommendation or lead to future employment
opportunities. The benefit of bringing an intern into full-time employment is that they are
already familiar with the company, their position, and they typically need little to no training.
Internships provide current college students the ability to participate in a field of their choice
to receive hands on learning about a particular future career, preparing them for full-time work
following graduation.
1.2 Types
Internships exist in a wide variety of industries and settings. An internship can be paid, unpaid,
or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). Internships may be part-time or full-time and are
usually flexible with students' schedules. A typical internship lasts between one and four
months, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the organization involved.
• Paid internships:
They are common in professional fields including medicine, architecture, science,
engineering, law, business (especially accounting and finance), technology, and
advertising. This type of internship is to expand an intern's knowledge both in their school
studies and also at the company. The intern is expected to bring ideas and knowledge from
whatever he or she has studied.
11 | P a g e
• Unpaid internships
They are typically through non-profit charities and think tanks which often have unpaid
or volunteer positions. A program must meet criteria to be properly classified as an
unpaid internship.
• Partially-paid internships
They are when students are paid in the form of a stipend. Stipends are typically a fixed
amount of money that is paid out on a regular basis. Usually, interns that are paid with
stipends are paid on a set schedule associated with the organization.
Another type of internship growing in popularity is the virtual internship, or we can call it
work from home in which the intern works remotely, and is not physically present at the job
location. It provides the capacity to gain job experience without the conventional requirement
of being physically present in an office. The internship is conducted via virtual means, such as
phone, email, and web communication. Virtual interns generally have the opportunity to work
at their own pace.

1.4 Benefits and Drawbacks of Virtual Internships
Benefits:
o Flexibility – Virtual internships allow interns to be in the comfort of their home and set
hours according to availability and a candidate can work at any place without any
difficulty.
o Diversity – Virtual internships are offered in many countries which allows interns to
virtually connect with other interns from around the world.
o No travelling cost - Virtual internships allow interns to complete assignments where it
is convenient for them and there is no travelling cost.
o Enhancing communication skills - Since interns will have to communicate with their
agency via email, Skype, or telephone, interns will automatically develop better
communication skills.
Drawbacks:
o No Feedback- It is important to remember to ask the agency for feedback on the
assignments completed. Sometimes assignments are given throughout the internship
without knowing if you are progressing.
o Less Interaction & Hand on Work - Virtual internships provide no personal interaction.
o Self-Discipline - Since virtual internships are so flexible, interns must be very
disciplined to complete assignments on time without much supervision.

CHAPTER - 3
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
20 | P a g e
1.1 RESEARCH DESIGN
The research design used in this project is descriptive in nature. Descriptive research is defined
as a research method that describes the characteristics of the population or phenomenon that is
being studied. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject rather than
the “why” of the research subject.
The stage of the research process is briefly explained below. The research process is beginning
with discovering the problem and explanation.
This research begins with discover of preferences of internships among undergraduates. After
a clear objective and definite design are created to make the research more efficient. The
problem definition stage of the research process is probably the most significant view.
Exploratory research then conducted throughout the beginning stage of the research process.
By analyzing any previous research on student’s motivation by communicating with
knowledge persons, and by casually examining the situation, the researcher can increasingly
sharpen the concepts. Secondary data related to internships are collected. Conversely,
secondary data maybe outdated or possibly will not precisely reach the objective of the
researcher, pilot study.
This also emphasized that there are many advantages of surveys method. Surveys present
quick, efficient and inexpensive of measuring information of the respondents. However, the
percentage and ratio vary from one to another.
Questionnaire
A questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the purpose of
gathering information from respondents. The questionnaire was invented by the Statistical
Society of London in 1838.
Although questionnaires are often designed for statistical analysis of the responses, this is not
always the case.
21 | P a g e
Questionnaires have advantages over some other types of surveys in that they are cheap, do not
require as much effort from the questioner as verbal or telephone surveys, and often have
standardized answers that make it simple to compile data. However, such standardized answers
may frustrate users. Questionnaires are also sharply limited by the fact that respondents must
be able to read the questions and respond to them. Thus, for some demographic groups
conducting a survey by questionnaire may not be concrete.
Google Forms
Google Forms is a survey administration app that is included in the Google Drive office suite
along with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Forms features all of the
collaboration and sharing features found in Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Google Forms is a tool
that allows collecting information from users via a personalized survey or quiz. The
information is then collected and automatically connected to a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is
populated with the survey and quiz responses.
Online Survey
Online survey or internet survey, is one of the most popular data-collection sources, where a
set of survey questions is sent out to a target sample and the members of this sample can
respond to the questions over the world wide web. Respondents receive online surveys via
various mediums such as email, embedded over website, social media etc.
Organizations implement online surveys to use the internet in order to gain insights and
feedback about upcoming products or services, change in marketing strategies, enhancement
in current features etc.
Secondary data analysis can save time that would otherwise be spent collecting data and,
particularly in the case of quantitative data, can provide larger and higher-quality databases
that would be unfeasible for any individual researcher to collect on their own. In addition,
analysts of social and economic change consider secondary data essential, since it is impossible
to conduct a new survey that can adequately capture past change and/or developments.
However, secondary data analysis can be less useful in marketing research, as data may be
outdated or inaccurate.

Sampling
Sampling is a process used in statistical analysis in which a predetermined number of
observations are taken from a larger population. The methodology used to sample from a larger
population depends on the type of analysis being performed, but it may include simple random
sampling or systematic sampling.
Random Sampling
With random sampling, every item within a population has an equal probability of being
chosen. It is the furthest removed from any potential bias because there is no human judgement
involved in selecting the sample.
A bar graph shows comparisons among discrete categories. One axis of the chart shows the
specific categories being compared, and the other axis represents a measured value. Some bar
graphs present bars clustered in groups of more than one, showing the values of more than one
measured variable.
Pie charts
A pie chart is a circular statistical graphic, which is divided into slices to illustrate numerical
proportion. In a pie chart, the arc length of each slice is proportional to the quantity it represents.
While it is named for its resemblance to a pie which has been sliced, there are variations on the
23 | P a g e
way it can be presented. Pie charts are very widely used in the business world and the mass
media.
Histogram
A histogram is an accurate representation of the distribution of numerical data. It is an estimate
of the probability distribution of a continuous variable and was first introduced by Karl
Pearson. It differs from a bar graph, in the sense that a bar graph relates two variables, but a
histogram relates only one. To construct a histogram, the first step is to "bin” the range of
values—that is, divide the entire range of values into a series of intervals—and then count how
many values fall into each interval. The bins are usually specified as consecutive, non-
overlapping intervals of a variable. The intervals must be adjacent, and are often of equal size.
Mean/Average
There are several kinds of means in various branches of mathematics. For a data set, the
arithmetic mean, also called the mathematical expectation or average, is the central value of a
discrete set of numbers: specifically, the sum of the values divided by the number of values.
The arithmetic mean is the most commonly used and readily understood measure of central
tendency in a data set. In statistics, the term average refers to any of the measures of central
tendency. The arithmetic mean of a set of observed data is defined as being equal to the sum
of the numerical values of each and every observation divided by the total number of
observations. The arithmetic mean is defined by the formula:

5.1 FINDING
The findings of the study are as follows:
5.2 RECOMMENDATION
The following recommendations are made on the basis of the research work:
◊ The websites offering internship programs should be reliable and garner trust from the
students.
◊ The website should circulate short online forms that collect specific information rather
than long forms which are time consuming.
◊ All the candidates who are applying for internships should check their internet speed
before applying in order to avoid any network issues.
◊ All the students applying for online internship should check the authenticity of the
website and be careful regarding the amount of personal information that they disclose.
◊ The company should provide timely and regular information to the candidate regarding
the progress and status of their internship application.
34 | P a g e
5.3 LIMITATIONS
When I did the survey, I faced following difficulty:
5.4. Conclusion
An internship provides the opportunity for a student or young professional to work alongside
regular staff in a workplace, to gain some basic hands-on experience and
educational/professional insight into a career path. Interns do not replace regular employees,
but work under the supervision of a mentor, supervisor, or other staff members.
Due to the educational context of an internship, which is focused on the personal and
professional development of the intern, internship positions are often unpaid. When an intern
starts interning in any company or organization, he or she is given proper training and
development programs so that he or she can perform his or her assigned task properly.
Internships are important because they provide insight into real-world employment settings
which can help to define career goals. They also enable students and young professionals to
develop soft-skills which are essential for employability. For example, good communication
skills, professional work ethics, initiative, and the ability to work well across multi-cultural or
global areas. Internships are excellent for resume boosting, networking, and for setting yourself
apart within a competitive job market.
