IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS IN PREPARING FUTURE ENDEAVOR

Monday 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Desierto, Julie Ann C.

Bachelor of Elementary Education – 2nd year

Ms. Buella
“IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WORLD BY TEACHING, CHANGE YOURSELF
FIRST, BECAUSE THE WORLD CAN’T CHANGE ITSELF, YOU SHOULD START BEING A
GOOD TEACHER YOURSELF” – (Desierto, 2019)

As becoming a good and unique facilitator of learning, I can easily influence my learners
and other people in the community. We don’t need to imitate other people just to satisfy their
eyes, their mind and their hearts. I know and I believe that uniqueness harmonizes the world
despite of the diversity of each and every one. Indeed, change is the only permanent thing in
the world. And changing my character from other mediocre teacher is the change that I wanted
to develop and implement in the future, not only for myself but most especially for my future
learners, the hunger and thirst for knowledge that they are experiencing right now, I want them
to feed knowledge that I know will help them to become a better person. Because I believe that
“Mediocre teacher tells, good teacher explains, the superior teacher demonstrates and the great
teacher inspires”.

We need to equip our students to be ethical actors and advocates in their future
workplace inside and outside the academia. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said “Intelligence plus
character – that is the goal of true education.” When we consider what a complete education
includes, Dr. King’s words of advice help us understand that pure intelligence isn’t enough. It’s
the content of one’s character that helps to ultimately determine the choices and actions an
individual will ultimately take. Dr. King also compared education without morals to a “Ship
without a compass.” Teachers are responsible for teaching specified standards of academics.
We have our course objectives, our teaching strategies, our standards, and our college and
career readiness goals. We have our lessons and our curriculums, all outlining the specific
academic criteria we are responsible for passing on to our students. Education is valuable, but
getting one is not the issue. What a student does with their education is what counts. Morality is
in part responsible for helping student’s best apply their education for their own personal benefit
and the benefit of their surrounding society.

Being in the field or teaching it is hard to develop at first but when the time comes that I
enjoyed the company of my friends and my study buddy I started to go overcome and cope with
the hardship. It is hard to avoid mistakes, that is true and there are so many ways to fail. But if
we know what is right we must do it. Indeed ethical behavior is far harder to display than one
would expect simply on the basis of what we learn from our parents, from school, and from our
religious training. To intervene, we must go through a series of steps, and unless all of the steps
are completed, we are not likely to behave in an ethical way, regardless of the amount of
training we have received in ethics, and regardless of our levels of other types of skills.
Basically, a Teacher like us is the role model of our society. I believe that every professional
came from the best professional who is our Teacher and our second Mother. I am preparing
myself for my future goal as a teacher of course together with my ethical character. It is more
important that we, human being have a good moral character than having a high intelligence.
Person who has a good moral character is a person who is near to success. My former
professor once said “it is good that you are intelligent but it is better if you are a good person”.
And I embrace that advice and always put that on my heart and mind that I am a good person,
despite of not being top on the class, but I am a good person and I have a good heart. It is
important that I know myself, I know my personality because if I don’t I will experience difficulty
by adjusting on the different community. And it is hard to teach your students the good moral
character that you don’t have. It is hard to pretend being someone who is not you.

As a future educator we must consider and think how we can positively influence our
students for them to develop their moral characters while studying. Because nowadays there
were students who don’t have respect towards their teacher maybe because they believe that
they have the right to do so. They have the stand that there is a law that can help them and
support their rights as a student. And us, as their second parent and their teacher we must
remove that thinking. We must help them to be a good person who has a good character
towards others. For us to help our student we must teach positive behaviors. One of the first
ways that we can do to bring moral education into our classroom is by directly speaking about
positive behaviors. Sometimes we assume that our students know the correct and moral thing to
do in any given moment. But we cannot allow this assumption to cause us to overlook the
opportunity to make “Teachable moments” out of situations in our classroom. We need to
openly share with our students what is the “right” thing to do and engage them in a discussion
that challenges them to evaluate for themselves what seems the most appropriate course of
action. Next way is to be a good role model to them, especially the elementary teachers like me.
Because in elementary their mind is not fully develop to do right thing, and us as their teacher
we need to show only right doings. Because most likely they are imitating what we act so we
need to be cautious on everything that we do when we are in front of them or while discussing a
lesson. As one of the few adults in the life of a child, it’s important that we use our conduct to
model for students what an ethical professional looks like. We need to make sure that we do the
right thing and conduct ourselves along the highest moral standards. Judge fairly, practice
honesty and respect, share, demonstrate responsibility, and allow them to see how we embody
these characteristics in and out of the classroom. Lastly, we must connect it to our content while
discussing. Sometimes learning certain content is straightforward learning. But we must look for
those opportunities where aspects of our content raise the moral question or connect to
character issues. A simple question that we ask to our students has an impact especially when
it is about doing the right thing and avoiding the wrong thing. Students enjoy being challenged to
think critically about themselves, and connecting ethical discussions to our content both
reinforces their content knowledge and their characters.

“I AM A TEACHER. IT IS HOW I DEFINE MYSELF. A GOOD TEACHER ISN’T

SOMEONE WHO GIVES THE ANSWERS OUT TO THE LEARNERS BUT SOMEONE WHO
TEACHES GOOD MORAL BEHAVIOR AND SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE NEEDS
AND DIFFICULTY OF THE LEARNERS. SOMEONE WHO GIVES KNOWLEDGE TO HELP
HER STUDENTS SUCCEED. THAT’S THE WAY I SEE MYSELF. I AM A GOOD TEACHER
WHO INFLUENCES MY STUDENTS MORAL DEVELOPMENT.” – (Desierto, 2019)
