Culture is a way of thinking, way of acting and the material things which form our way of
life.

the members of the society. Non material culture on the contrary refers to the ideas of the
different members of the society.
Cultural shock: an uneasiness that an individual experiences when entering a society which
does not have similar values, behaviours, practices to one’s own culture or society.
Culture, nation and society- Culture refers to a shared way of life of a group of individuals.
Nation on the other hand is a political entity. Society is the organized interaction of people
who live in a particular society.
Elements of Culture
1. Symbols – symbol is anything which has a particular meaning understood by the
people of a particular society sharing the same culture. A person might find oneself
isolated if one enters a culture whose meaning is not known to him/her.
2. Language- language is a set of symbols which allows the individuals of a society to
communicate among themselves. Different societies have different symbols and thus
different languages. Some symbols are restricted to only some societies which creates
a variation in the thinkings of people with different culture.
3. Beliefs and values- these are the arbitrary standards set in in the society which create
a broad guideline of what is considered to be good and what is not. Beliefs, on the
other hands are opinions on whether something is true or false. There moght be
instances when there are contradictions based on the cultural values of a society. For
example : promoting equality and at the same time opposing same sex maariage.
People start living with these contradictions. Values in a particular society changes
from time to time and is not constant. Values evolve as time passes by. For example,
there was a great deal of emphasis on the material aspect in the united states in the 90s
but that has changed in the present as more and more people tend to deviate towards
the spiritual aspects of life. Values are also something that differ from society to
society. For example Japanese focus towards the values of harmony while the
Americans focus towards the value of individualism.
4. Norms- rules and behaviours by which the society guides the behaviours of its people.
There are two types of norms Mores and Folkways. MORES- norms that are widely
observed in the society for their moral significance. For example- wearing clothes
while in public places. On the other hand folkways are the norms and routine of
casual interaction.

restricted to only one kind of culture.
Counter culture

society. Eg Hippies in the 1960, which focused on the being and not the “doing”.
Ethnocentrism
