Profession can be defined as a job that has an important social function in a community.
According to Lieberman (1956), a true profession is a field that has characteristics such as
the importance of intellectual skills, adequate professional training, service that is needed by
the society, enjoys personal and group autonomy, has code of ethics and own organisation
to manage matters related to the profession. This shows that in order for a job to be counted
as professional, it must have all the criteria required above. Teacher plays an important part
in the world of education. They serve as the agent of change at school and committed in
realizing successful changes in education. Issues and challenges are things that cannot be
escaped from when you are at school. Therefore, it is important for teachers to practise
professionalism in encountering these things at school while carrying out their work as
educators.

Firstly, it is to preserve the trust of parents and students toward teachers at school.
By practising and adhere to the code of ethics of teachers, the stakeholders’ trust will remain
and this will help the school. Sherpa (2018) said that the professional code of ethics for
teachers is purposely designed to protect the rights of the students. It becomes crucial and
important for the teachers to understand their work ethics and values before entering in
teaching profession. By practising the professionalism, parents or students will know that
they are well protected and there will be no misconducts to happen as long as the teachers
follow the code of ethics. For example, students’ priority should be put first before anything,
students’ confidentiality must be kept secret, teachers must try their best in educating the
students and be fair to all students regardless of their religion, culture and skin colour. As a
teacher, they have a huge role to play in the entire teaching and learning
process[ CITATION Art13 \l 1033 ]. When schools and teachers are able to incorporate
multicultural society in every aspect of school life such by promoting diversity at school as a
positive learning environment, minority students will feel safer and not scared of going to
school. Not only that, students in Malaysia will learn the fundamental knowledge of living in a
multicultural society. Hence, will able to celebrate the diversity amongst them and reduce
racism at school.

Next, the reason why teachers should practise professionalism in encountering

issues and challenges is that to maintain and promote accountability amongst teachers.
Students and misbehaviours are inseparable. It is up to the teachers’ skills and knowledge
on how to solve it and tackle students’ interest in the classroom. Accountability can be
defined as the teacher’s responsibility for their students and his or her learning progress.
Kanika (2016) in her paper explains that teachers’ accountability can be divided in several
category which are to the learners, to the stakeholders, parents, community, and to the
nation. Teacher’s accountability to the learners is to dedicate himself for the benefits of his or
her students. Teacher must be willing to sacrifice their time and ensure that the process of
impart of knowledge towards the students is successful. Not only that, to achieve the optimal
learning of the students, the teacher should take care of the students' progress according to
their capacity. Hence the motto of the teachers should be always for the benefits of their
students because the success of the students depends essentially upon the competences of
teachers, their sense of dedication, and accountability.

It is also important to practise professionalism in encountering issues and challenges

to ensure that the noble appearance is well kept and not tarnished. For teachers,
professionalism also includes personal appearance and dressing appropriately that can be
found in code of ethics for teachers (Meador, 2019). This includes on how the teachers act
inside and outside of school because as a school employee, teachers must keep in mind
that that they represent their school district in everything they do. When teachers dress the
way they are supposed to, the negative perspective of the society can be changed because
there are cases where teachers do not dress appropriately at school.

Lastly, teachers should practise professionalism in encountering issues and

challenges so that they can create rapport between them and the stakeholders. Maintaining
and building a healthy relationship with the stakeholders like parents, students, school staffs
and the administrators is crucial as they are the main components in professionalism. In
order to maintain and build relationship that lasts, honesty and integrity is important. Hence,
teachers should always practise honesty when dealing with the stakeholders. Failing to
create rapport with the stakeholders will disconnect you with them and will impact the
effectiveness of the school. Not only that, teachers should know how to keep their
boundaries with their students by keeping a certain distance and not blurring the lines
between your professional and personal lives. It is also important to treat everyone fairly and
avoid bias or favouritism in the classroom.
