b. Operation and Maintenance (O+M) Manuals: Submit manuals that detail the
step-by-step procedures required for system filling, start up, operation and shutdown.
Include in the manuals the manufacturer's name, model number, service manual,
parts list and brief descriptions of all equipment and their basic operating features.
List routine maintenance procedures, possible breakdowns and repairs,
recommended spare parts, troubleshooting guides, piping and equipment layout,
balanced fluid flow rates, and simplified wiring and control diagrams of the system as
installed.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
A. Scope of Work
1. This Section shall govern the design, construction, installation, alteration and repair of
systems, equipment and appliances intended to utilize solar energy for central hot water
heating.
A. Manufacturers: Provide systems and products from one of the listed manufacturers within the
approved manufacturer list.
2.5 MATERIALS
2.7 ABSORBER
A. The collector shall be designed for use with closed circuit technology and shall be suitable for
installation where radiation levels are high.
B. The collector absorber shall be made from treated pressed steel forming 25mm headers and 35
multi-flow risers.
C. For increasing the absorption and decreasing emissions from the absorber, the manufactured
absorber plate shall be black polyester powder coat or black chrome plated with a high absorptivity
factor and a low emittance factor.

2.9 GLASS
A. The collector glass shall be tempered, with low iron content and a minimum of 3 mm thick to
maximise transmittance of solar radiation and minimize reflection.
B. The glass cover shall protect the absorber plate and the insulation under, from severe weather
conditions.
C. The glass shall be tested to AS 2712 for breakpoint and safety.
A. The gained solar energy shall be stored in a storage tank where for use at any time of the day.
The storage tank shall be well insulated with CFC free polyurethane foam for longer storage
periods.
B. The outer case shall be provided with 0.4 mm thick aluminum of marine grade.
C. For periods of lesser solar incidence, a thermostat operated electric booster of 3.6/4.8 kW shall be
provided inside the storage tank.
D. The booster shall be controlled by the use of an approved 24 hour automatic time clock and or
manual on/off management switch located internally with easy access.
E. The electric booster must have automatic thermal reset function integrrated within the design of the
controlling tank thermostat.
F. The tank shall be made from 2.5 mm steel and must be suitable for mains pressure.
G. The storage tank shall be internally coated or lined with 2 coats of ceramic lining, to prevent
corrosion.
H. The tank shall be able to withstand a working pressure of 1000 kPa and shall be tested to 2100
kPa
I. The storage tank shall be fitted with a minimum 33 mm sacrificial magnesium anode having a
minimum of 7 years of life span.

C. This shall work automatically to cut-off the thermo-siphoning through a mechanical solenoid valve
when the tank temperature reaches a 70-75C cut-off temperature.
D. The valve should re-open when the tank water temperature comes down to allow the
Thermosiphon to restart.
E. A thermostatic 3 way mixing valve shall be installed at the hot water outlet at each building to
temper the outlet temperature to the required one of 52-55 deg C.
F. The valve shall be compatible for installing in a ring main recirculation pumped circuit with a cold
water temperature of 20-35 deg C and a HW temperature of 60-70 deg C.
G. The valve shall be suitable for outdoor installation.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verification of Conditions: Examine areas for compliance with requirements for installation
and conditions affecting performance of the Work. Identify conditions detrimental to a proper and
timely completion and notify the Engineer of the unsatisfactory conditions. Proceed with installation
only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Access shall be provided to solar energy equipment and appliances for maintenance. Solar
systems and appurtenances shall not obstruct or interfere with the operation of any doors,
windows or other building components requiring operation or access.
B. Collectors Mounted above the Roof
1. When mounted on or above the roof covering, the collector array and supporting
construction shall be constructed of non-combustible materials in accordance with IBC to
the extent required for the type of roof construction of the building to which the collectors
are accessory.
2. Solar hot water collectors must be installed on roof with tilt and exposed to direct sun
(without shadowing). They should be tilted towards equator (south direction) with an angle
as recommended by the Authorities.
3. Single or multiple units shall be connected together in parallel to cover the desired daily hot
water load.
4. The system shall also be equipped with all necessary safety devices that guarantee the
system function in a proper way without problems.
5. Such safety devices shall involve cold inlet relief valve and Pressure & Temperature relief
valves supplied by the manufacturer.
6. A pressure reduction valve should also be fitted to maintain the incoming pressure less than
850 kPa. The Pressure & Temperature relief valve shall be set to relieve water at 1000kPa
and/or 99C
7. The storage tank shall be equipped with all necessary fittings on cold and hot water side, in
order to connect with piping network.
8. It is contractor’s responsibility to ensure that all civil, electrical, mechanical (piping etc) and
all works related to solar water heater system shall be done according to the specifications.
9. All hot water piping shall be adequately insulated to ensure minimum heat losses during re-
circulation.
10. A hot water circulation pump set (with 24 hrs timer) shall be provided to ensure continuous
hot water availability in the ring but run just enough to ensure hot water is available in the
ring main.
11. It shall be the Solar specialist’s responsibility to commission the system. The Solar
specialist shall ensure that system has been installed in proper way and that the system
shall supply hot water at 58-60 deg C.

3.3 DEMONSTRATION
A. General: Refer to Section 017900 Demonstration and Training for additional demonstration
and training requirements.
B. Demonstration
1. Demonstrate to the Engineer, the features and functions of the system.
2. Furnish the necessary trained personnel to perform the demonstration and instructions
and arrange to have the manufacturer's representatives present to assist with the
demonstrations.
a. Allow a minimum of 2 sessions for performing the prescribed demonstration lasting 4
hours (i.e. each session lasting 2 hours).
3. Arrange with the Engineer the date and times for performing the demonstrations.
a. The Engineer shall select date and time for demonstration.
C. Training
1. Instruct the Employer/ Owner and designated representatives in the proper operation and
maintenance of the system.
2. Conduct a training course for members of the operating and maintenance staff as
designated by the Engineer.
3. The training course shall be given at the installation during normal working hours for a total
of 2 hours and shall start after the system is functionally complete but prior to final
acceptance tests.
4. The field instructions shall cover all of the items contained in the accepted Operations and
Maintenance (O+M) Manuals, as well as demonstrations of routine maintenance
operations.

A. Acceptable Manufacturers
1. Manufacturer to provide documentation on similar tanks, which have been in use for a
minimum of 5 years, including names of users and locations of, tanks which can be visibly
inspected.
2. The equipment and its accessories shall be manufactured by the original manufacturer
within their factory premises and shall not be outsourced nor relabeled from third party
manufacturers.
3. Manufacturers shall be in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001 and ISO 9001 Certified
4. Manufacturer requirements shall be complied at all times.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 GENERAL
A. Scope of Work
1. This Section shall govern the design, construction, installation, alteration and repair of
systems, equipment and appliances intended to utilize solar energy for central hot water
heating.
A. Manufacturers: Provide systems and products from one of the listed manufacturers within the
approved manufacturer list.
2.5 MATERIALS
C. Heat Exchangers
1. Heat exchangers used in domestic water-heating systems shall be accepted for the
intended use. The system shall have adequate protection to ensure that the potability of the
water supply and distribution system is properly safeguarded.
D. Solar Storage Accumulator
1. Pressurized thermal storage units shall be listed and labelled and bear a label showing the
manufacturer's name and address, model number, serial number, storage unit maximum
and minimum allowable operating temperatures, storage unit maximum and minimum
allowable operating pressures and the types of heat transfer fluids compatible with the
storage unit. The label shall clarify that these specifications apply only to the thermal
storage unit.
2. Storage vessels shall be in accordance with BS 853-1+A3 Grade A or Grade B as indicated.
a. Each solar heat accumulator shall have the following provided.
b. Safety valve:
1) Pressure gauge on the secondary side.
2) Thermometer on the secondary side.
3) Open vent pipe on systems open to atmosphere.
4) Thermostatic and high limit control.
5) Drain cock or tap, operated by a removable key.
6) Graphite type bursting disc as appropriate.
7) Pressure gauge and cock on the primary side of solar fluid heated
storage accumulators.
8) Solar fluid to accumulator heat exchanger.
9) Accumulator to domestic hot water heat exchanger.
3. Bursting discs in accordance with BS EN ISO 4126 and BS 853-1+A3 shall be fitted to solar
heat accumulator shells and to all hot water storage calorifiers where the primary heating
medium is solar fluid. The rupturing pressure of the bursting disc and the set pressure of
the safety valve shall be as indicated.
4. For BS 853-1+A3 storage solar heat accumulators where the primary heating medium is
solar fluid, the following shall be included where indicated.
5. An automatic fast response isolating valve, operated by excess secondary pressure, in the
primary flow pipework.
6. A check valve in the primary return pipework.
a. The discharge arrangements from safety valves and bursting discs shall be in
accordance with the requirements of Division 23 Heating, Ventilating and Air
Conditioning (HVAC) Work Sections. 6. Heating surfaces shall be formed from
copper tubes. Shells of non-storage calorifiers shall be mild steel. Shells of non-
storage calorifiers on DHWS systems shall be galvanized after manufacture, or
copper, as indicated.
b. Solar heat accumulators shall be mild steel galvanized after manufacture, mild steel
lined with copper, or copper as indicated. Sacrificial anodes shall be provided as
indicated.
c. Where solar heat accumulator shells are galvanized the copper tubes shall be tin-
coated on the secondary side.
d. The tube plate and tube chest cover shall be provided with a lifting ring where the
flange diameter is 600mm and over. Provision shall be made for easy removal of the
heating surface from the body. Sufficient set-bolts shall be provided to enable the
tube nest to be withdrawn without breaking the joint between the tube plate and the
chest cover plate.
e. Flange drillings shall be uniform, as far as practicable, to permit interchange of tube
assemblies. Spare tube and plate assemblies shall be supplied where indicated.
f. Horizontal solar heat accumulators shall be supported on brick or concrete piers
and/ or mild steel cradles. Vertical solar heat accumulators shall be provided with
purpose made steel support frames. Sheet lead pads shall be fitted on the bearing
surfaces of all copper solar heat accumulators.
g. On installations of 2 No. or more solar heat accumulators each safety vent may be
connected into a common vent pipe through a 3-way cock so arranged that no solar
heat accumulator shall be isolated simultaneously from the open vent pipe and the
free outlet. Vent pipes shall rise continuously and not be obstructed by a valve or any
other item.
h. The secondary side of multiple storage vessels shall be connected in parallel as
indicated. Unless otherwise indicated each vessel shall be independent and
complete with isolating valves to permit partial service to be maintained when the
isolated vessel is out of service. Isolated sections of pipework shall be provided with
drain cocks in accordance with Division 23 Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning
(HVAC) Work Sections.
i. Solar heat accumulators shall be provided with a manhole of the size and type
indicated in BS 853-1 unless a bolted top is fitted. Sacrificial anodes shall be
provided as indicated.
j. Manhole covers shall be secured with studs or bolts and nuts, or with 1 No. or more
external bridge(s). Joints for handhole and manhole covers shall be made with an
accepted re-usable jointing material.
E. Name Plates
1. Secure to the major item of equipment the manufacturer's name, address, type or style,
model or serial number and catalog number on a plate.
F. Piping System
1. Provide a piping system complete with pipe, pipe fittings, valves, strainers; expansion loops
hangers, inserts, supports, anchors, guides, sleeves and accessories with this Specification
and the Design Drawings.
2. Provide, install and test the piping. Provide piping flow rates below 5 ft/ sec. Piping shall be
Type L or Type M copper tubing in accordance with ASTM B88, with 95-5 tin-antimony
soldered joints in accordance with Division 22 Plumbing Work Sections.
G. Pipe Insulation
1. Furnish interior pipe insulation and coverings with approved insulation materials or
acceptable equivalent.
2. Provide outside array piping insulation with a capability of withstanding 121°C, except that
piping insulation within 455mm of collector connections shall be capable of withstanding
205°C. Protect outside piping insulation from water damage and ultraviolet degradation with
a suitable outer coating.
H. Balancing Valves (for multiple collector banks)
1. If systems are proposed with multiple collector banks, provide balancing valves suitable for
963kPa and 121°C service. Furnish balancing valves with bronze body/ brass ball
construction with seat rings compatible with system fluid and differential readout ports
across valve seat area.
2. Provide readout ports fitted with internal insert of compatible material and check valve.
Provide calibrated balancing valves with a memory stop feature to allow valve to be closed
for service and reopened to set point without disturbing balance position and with a
calibrated nameplate to assure specific valve settings. Provide calibrated balancing valves
and ball valves at the outlet of the collector bank. The balancing valves are indicated to
allow the array to be flow balanced. The ball valves are required to enable the array to be
disconnected for maintenance or repair.
3. This Section is not applicable to systems of only 1 collector bank, where balance of flow is
not an issue.
I. Pressure Gauges
1. Provide pressure gauges with throttling type needle valve or a pulsation dampener and
shutoff valve. Furnish a 90mm minimum dial size.
J. Thermometers
1. Supply thermometers with wells and separable bronze sockets.
K. Pressure and Temperature
1. Solar energy system components containing pressurized fluids shall be protected against
pressures and temperatures exceeding design limitations with a pressure and temperature
relief valve. Each section of the system in which excessive pressures are capable of
developing shall have a relief device located ensuring that a section cannot be valved off or
otherwise isolated from a relief device. Relief valves shall be in accordance with the
requirements of Division 23 Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Work
Sections.
L. Vacuum
1. The solar energy system components that are subjected to a vacuum while in operation or
during shutdown shall be designed to withstand such vacuum or shall be protected with
vacuum relief valves.
M. Expansion Tanks
1. Liquid single-phase solar energy systems shall be equipped with expansion tanks sized in
accordance with Division 22 Plumbing Work Sections.
N. Valves
1. Provide valves compatible with the piping. Ball valves shall be used for shutoff, with full port,
bronze body, bronze ball and Teflon seat. Bronze hose end gate valves shall be used for
draining low points of piping.
2. Refer to Division 23 Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Work Sections.
O. Penetrations
1. Roof and wall penetrations shall be flashed and sealed to prevent entry of water, rodents
and insects.
P. Pipe hangers and supports
1. Support and hang piping ensuring that the weight of the piping is not supported by drywall,
siding, or other building members not designed to bear load. Support piping ensuring that
thermal expansion and contraction of pipe lengths is accommodated.
Q. Collector Subsystem
1. Solar Collector Construction. The type of solar collector proposed shall be compatible with
the proposed system type.
a. Absorber plate shall be in vacuum and coated with high efficient selective coating
which ensures maximum radiation absorption and minimize thermal radiation losses.
b. Heat pipe's heat transfer fluid shall be water based.
c. Heat pipe condenser shall have integral temperature limiting feature.
d. Absorber plate and heat pipe shall be enclosed in an evacuated glass tube.
e. Condenser heat exchanger and clamp assembly that transfers heat to solar loop
shall be enclosed in a corrosion resistance insulated header box.
f. All supporting structures including bolts and nuts shall be stainless steel.
2. Collectors shall be evacuated heat-pipe type, with selective absorber surfaces. Furnish
collectors of weathertight construction and with stainless steel mounting brackets and
hinges. Furnish stainless steel assembly hardware including all bolts, washers and nuts.
Install tubes on the absorber plate ensuring that they drain by gravity.
R. Piping
1. Connect interconnecting array piping between solar collectors, in a reverse return
configuration with approximately equal pipe length for any possible flow path. Indicate flow
rate through the collector array.
2. Provide the collector bank isolated by valves, with a pressure relief valve and with the
capability of being drained. Locate manually operated air vents at system high points and
pitch array piping a minimum of 0.25"/ ft. ensuring that piping can be drained by gravity.
Install balancing valves at the outlet of the collector bank as indicated.
3. Refer to Division 23 Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Work Sections.
S. Supports for Solar Collector Array
1. Provide support structure for the collector array of stainless steel. Furnish a support
structure, which secures the collector array at the proper tilt angle with respect to horizontal
and orientation with respect to true south.
2. The flat panels/ collector shall be installed horizontally on the roof level.
3. Provide a support structure that shall withstand the static weight of filled collectors and
piping, wind, seismic and other anticipated loads without damage. Provide structural
reinforcement for the roof as necessary to accommodate the additional loads imposed by
the solar water heating system. Provide a support structure, which allows access to all
equipment for maintenance, repair and replacement. Neoprene or EPDM washers shall
separate all dissimilar metals.
T. Heat Transport Subsystem
1. Pumps
a. Provide electrically driven circulating pump set. Support pumps on a concrete
foundation or by the piping on which installed. Construct the pump shaft of corrosion
resistant alloy steel with a mechanical seal.
b. Provide stainless steel impellers and casings of bronze. Control motors with switches
that can be activated by the differential temperature controller manual
override (Hand-Off-Automatic).
2. Heat Transfer Fluid
a. Heat transfer fluid shall be compatible with all materials in the system.
b. The nature and amount of heat transfer fluid shall depend on the type of system
proposed. Any conditioners or corrosion inhibitors added to the heat transfer fluid
shall be non-toxic.
U. Control and Instrumentation Subsystem
1. Differential Temperature Control Equipment
a. As required by the accepted system design, furnish the control equipment as a
system from a single manufacturer. Furnish a solid-state electronic type controller
complete with an integral transformer to supply low voltage.
b. Controller accuracy shall be ±0.5°C. Supply controllers that are compatible with the
PT 100 or PT 1000 temperature sensors. Provide differential controls with direct
digital temperature readings of all temperatures sensed. Supply controls with a visual
indicator when pumps are energized and recording capabilities. Provide a controller
that shall identify open and short circuits on both the solar collector temperature
sensor circuit and the storage tank sensor circuit. An optional BTU reading is
preferred.
2. Thermistor Temperature Sensors
a. Provide temperature sensors that are compatible with the differential temperature
controller, with an accuracy of ±1% at 20°C. Supply sensors that have passed an
accelerated life test conducted by subjecting thermistor assemblies to a constant
temperature of 130°C or greater for a period of 1000 hours minimum with an
accuracy of within ±1% as stated above. Provide immersion wells or watertight.
3. Tempering Valve
a. Systems shall have a tempering or mixing valve to limit the temperature of the hot
water supplied to the plumbing fixtures.
V. Electrical Work
1. Provide electric motor-driven equipment complete with motor, motor starters and
controls. Provide electrical equipment and wiring in accordance with local codes. Furnish
motor starters complete with thermal overload protection and other appurtenances
necessary for the motor control indicated. Provide the motor of sufficient size to drive
the equipment at the indicated capacity without exceeding the nameplate rating of the
motor.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Verification of Conditions: Examine areas for compliance with requirements for installation
and conditions affecting performance of the Work. Identify conditions detrimental to a proper and
timely completion and notify the Engineer of the unsatisfactory conditions. Proceed with installation
only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Access shall be provided to solar energy equipment and appliances for maintenance. Solar
systems and appurtenances shall not obstruct or interfere with the operation of any doors,
windows or other building components requiring operation or access.
B. Collectors Mounted above the Roof
1. When mounted on or above the roof covering, the collector array and supporting
construction shall be constructed of non-combustible materials in accordance with IBC to
the extent required for the type of roof construction of the building to which the collectors
are accessory.
3.3 DEMONSTRATION
A. General: Refer to Section 017900 Demonstration and Training for additional demonstration
and training requirements.
B. Demonstration
1. Demonstrate to the Engineer, the features and functions of the system.
2. Furnish the necessary trained personnel to perform the demonstration and instructions
and arrange to have the manufacturer's representatives present to assist with the
demonstrations.
a. Allow a minimum of 2 sessions for performing the prescribed demonstration lasting 4
hours (i.e. each session lasting 2 hours).
3. Arrange with the Engineer the date and times for performing the demonstrations.
a. The Engineer shall select date and time for demonstration.
C. Training
1. Instruct the Employer/ Owner and designated representatives in the proper operation and
maintenance of the system.
2. Conduct a training course for members of the operating and maintenance staff as
designated by the Engineer.
3. The training course shall be given at the installation during normal working hours for a total
of 2 hours and shall start after the system is functionally complete but prior to final
acceptance tests.
4. The field instructions shall cover all of the items contained in the accepted Operations and
Maintenance (O+M) Manuals, as well as demonstrations of routine maintenance
operations.
