Chapter I

Background of the Study

Traceability study refers to the capability of tracing someone. It is the ability to

verify the educational background and some information such as one person’s current

work and life status. This research necessitates tracking the alumni of Our Lady of

Sorrows Academy and know their educational background after graduating.

The researchers want to know if how many of them are successful, on process, and

not at all in their different profession.

Objectives

 To apprehend if the alumni of a specific batch took college

 To perceive if the work they have is related to the course that they took up in

college

 To assimilate the status or positions in life of the alumni.

 To comprehend how many alumni of batch 2009-2010 become successful

 To tumble the percentage of alumni who are still living inside the municipality of

Dolores, Quezon

Statement of the Problem

The researchers are conducting this traceability study to administer answers to the

following questions:
1
 How many OLSA graduates continued their tertiary education?

 What course did they take?

 Who among them did not continue study after graduating High School?

 Who among them are practicing their professions?

 Are their current work related to the course they took in college?

 How did Our Lady of Sorrows Academy help the alumni in their life and career as

a Christ-centered institution?

Significance of the Study

After finishing high school, those students need to move on to the next chapter of

their lives which is tertiary education. They have two choices: pursue studying or

standby. This only means that, the school where graduates came from will not be in touch

with their former students anymore. The importance and significance of this study is not

only to the alumni students of Our Lady of Sorrows Academy. It can also provide

assistance to the school in tracking their alumnus.

It is also a relish for the administration of Our Lady of Sorrows Academy if their

alumni are reached their own ambition, which they called ‘‘Alagang OLSA’’.

Assumption of the Study

The researchers are expecting that half of the total population of a particular batch

entered college and finished their tertiary education. Most of them have a work and some

are already practicing their chosen profession. There are also OLSA graduates that are

2
currently working outside the country, but some are still seeking for a job. The

researcher’s presumption is that for almost ten years, the alumni have been settled in their

own life. The researchers presumed that the alumni from Our Lady of Sorrows Academy

became fruitful in their journey.

Scope and Limitations

This traceability study is only limited to the alumni of Our Lady of Sorrows

Academy. This research study concerns about the lives of the alumni after they graduated

in high school, their course taken, professions, and current life status.

Review of Related Literature

Traceability is the ability to verify the history, location, or application of an item

by means of documented recorded identifications.

Other common definitions include the capability (and implementation) of keeping

track of a given set or type of information to a given degree, or the ability to

chronologically interrelate uniquely identifiable entities in a way that is verifiable.

The History of Our Lady of Sorrows Academy

Costly snuggled at the foot of Mt. Banahaw along the boundary of Quezon,

Province, is a small town of Dolores, Quezon. In the year 1948, the simple lifestyle of the

people who have just emerged from painful memories of World War II, found a big

change in the arrival of the new Parish Priest, Rev. Father Jose Bercilla Cuevas, local of

Lipa City and Candelaria, Quezon and a priest of Diocese of Lucena.

The priest at that time was disheartened to discover the missing necessities in the

life of the parishioners. Sympathetically, understanding the urgency of responding to the

spiritual and economic needs of the people in the poblacion and barrios, the kind,

intellectual and energetic priest thought of pulling up a Catholic Secondary Institution,

despite all existing obstacles.

In 1949, with conviction and determination, the Our Lady of Sorrows Academy

named after the town’s patroness, was opened in the church convent with 32 first year

students. Personally dedicated to the school, the indefatigable priest went to the extent of

5
draining the financial resource of his aged parents with the constructions of a new

building on 1957. Since then, Fr. Cuevas managed the school as an independent owner

administrator for ten continuous years.

In the years that followed, Father Jose B. Cuevas ably managed the school as

director and sole proprietor, but then the school failed to proceed with a fourth year due

to inadequacy of funds. Realizing the disastrous consequences to parents and children

with the closure of the school, four prominent Catholics of Dolores offered help

assistance to the Academy namely Aurelio Alilio, Albino Amat, Jose Gaurano and pedro

Ventocilla, hence the first batch of graduates in 1954, with Our lady of Sorrows

Academy, was converted into corporation, retaining Father Cuevas as School Director.

The school’s much availed recognition was granted in 1955.

In 1968, half of the ownership of the school was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Nicolas

Alilio Sr; a couple very dear to the School Founder since their high school days. Then a

new building rose in a half-hectare land near Lagnas River which was occupied in 1967

to date.

With profound regrets, Father Jose B. Cuevas returned to his creator on

September 29, 1974, two weeks after the school’s Silver Jubilee. Since then, the

administration struggled hard to pool converted efforts to further continue and achieve

fulfillment to the school’s Vision and Mission as dreamt by its Founder.

Starting a new life after 50 golden years to cherish and remember, Our lady of

Sorrows Academy now, has expanded its wings into a corporation with the inclusion of

Mrs. Elisa M. Amat, Estelita M. Miranda and Mr. and Mrs. Lauro Baguisa moving

6
onward to the New Millennium with the grace and dignity upholding deeper commitment

and service to the community.

The Founder of Our Lady of Sorrows Academy

Rev. Father Jose Cuevas Y Bercilla was born on September 9, 1914 to Severino

Cuevas and Josefa Bercilla of Lipa, Batangas. After his elementary schooling in Lipa, he

entered San Francisco de Sales Minor Seminary in San Pabllo City, Laguna. Then he

took up Philosophy and Theology at the University of Santo Tomas, he finished

Licentiatus “Philosophia” – Summa Cum Laude. He was obtained Sub-Deacon on May

18, 1940, deacon on September 8, 1940 and ordained priest in candelaria, Quezon,

December 1941. He completed a thesis entitled “La Posibilidad de Merito En Jesu

Cristo”.

CHAPTER III

Methods and Procedures

Method of Research

In this study, quantitative research and analytical design has been found to be the

most suitable type of research design. This design helps in presenting the numerical

profile of the respondents in keeping the track of their success. Secondly, analytical

research design aids in analyzing the relationship between the respondents and their

success now and also helps in analyzing study variables in relation to the personal

background variables of the respondents.

Subjects of the Study

The subject of the study are the Graduates Batch 2009-2010 of Our Lady of

sorrows Academy, having a total of 37 respondents.

Description of Research Instruments

This study uses a combination type of questionnaire that includes Yes or No,

Recognition type wherein the subjects have a set of choices, Subjective type wherein

they re free to give their own opinions and answers and a completion type wherein they

are being provided with a question and they are required to write the words.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data, the researchers used Social Media such as Facebook and

Messenger to track the Batch 2009-2010. They messaged each alumnus and asked

14
permission if they can make an interview or a survey with them. Some of the

questionnaires were personally distributed on the respondents and the rest were sent

through messenger. Upon sending the survey questionnaires, the researchers also

explained the purpose of the study and what to do for them to understand how to answer

the questions. The questionnaires were generated and the researchers aligned the result

to come up with the findings.

Statistical Treatment Sampling

The researchers used convenience sampling that uses people from target

population available at the time and willing to take part. After the survey, the researchers

gathered all the data and analyzed the information based on the respondents anwers.
