Foundation Design (RCE-061)

Assignment-2

Q. No. Question CO PO

Explain the important factors that are to be considered for designing the
1 shallow foundation. 2 1

Define these terms: (i) Effective Overburden pressure, (ii) The net
2 ultimate bearing capacity (iii) Net allowable bearing pressure and (iv) 2 1
Safe bearing pressure.
Explain the general and local shear failure with neat sketch diagram. Also
3 explain the difference in local and punching shear failure. 2 1

What are the assumptions of Terzaghi’s bearing capacity theory.

Write the equations for ultimate bearing capacity for square, strip,
4 2 1, 2
rectangular and circular footings in both the cases of general and local
shear failure.
What will be the gross and net allowable bearing pressure of a sand
having Φ’ = 25º, and an effective unit weight of 17 kN/m 3 and under the
following cases: (a) size of footing 2×2 m 2 (b) Circular footing of 1 m
dia., (c) size of footing 4×2 m2 and (d) 1 m wide strip footing
5 2 2, 3
Given for Φ’ = 25º, Nc = 25.1, Nq = 12.7, Nγ = 9.7. .
The footing is placed at a depth of 1 m below the ground surface and the
water table is at great depth. Use F s = 3 Compute by Terzaghi’s local
shear failure.
A strip footing 1.2 m wide is supported on a soil with its base at a
depth of 1 m below ground surface. The soil properties are as
follows: C = 15 kN/m2, Φ = 35º, γm =18 kN/m3, γsub =10 kN/m3, Nc
= 57.8, Nq = 41.4, Nγ = 42.4. Determine the ultimate bearing
capacity if
6 2 2,3
a) Water table is at great depth
b) Water table is at the level of the base of the footing
c) Water table is at ground surface
d) Water table is 0.5 m below the ground surface
e) Water table is 0.25 m below the base of the footing
At what depth should a footing of size 2×3 m 2 be founded to provide a
factor of safety of 3, if the soil is stiff clay having cohesion of 60 kN/m 2?
7 The unit weight of the soil is 18 kN/m 3. The ultimate bearing capacity of 2 2,3
the footing is 500 kN/m2. Use Terzhagi’s theory. The water table is at
great depth.
What are the components of foundation settlement? Write the equation for
immediate Settlement and consolidation settlement for normal and over
consolidated soil.
8 2 1, 2
Estimate the immediate settlement of a concrete footing 2×2 m in size
founded at a depth of 1 m in saturated clay whose E s = 90 kg/cm2. If =
0.85.The footing is expected to transmit a unit pressure of 200 kN/m 2.
