GRADE 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

SUBJECT: Grade 11 GENERAL MATHEMATICS

TOPIC: Composition of Function
REFERENCES: Conceptual Math and Beyond, pages 17-23
MATERIALS: visual aids, laptop, task cards, Curriculum Guide (CG)

Time/Duration INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

Objectives:

1. Define and illustrate the composition of function

2. Performs composition of function

5 minutes
Priming Activity: PLAY OR PASS

Let’s play WORD POOL!

Direction:

1. The Teacher will draw a group who will decide if

“Play” or “Pass”.
2. If they choose to “Play”, they will answer the problem
to be flashed on the screen, if they choose to “Pass”
they will choose a group who will answer the given
problem.
3. The problem will be solved for 30 seconds, if the
group failed to give the answer, the teacher will
choose a group who will steal and give the correct
answer. Every correct answer will earn point/s
depending on the number of letters revealed on the
WORD POOL.
4. In every correct answer, the teacher will reveal the
letter corresponds to the Hidden Word, if the group
can guess the words, they will yell and say “We can
Guest”. If they got the correct answer, they will earn
5 points, if NOT, they will be grounded for 2 rounds.
5. After revealing the Hidden Word, the group having the
highest points will be the winner and will receive a
special prize.

ACTIVITY: DISCOVER ME MORE!

Materials:
Two glasses 1. f ( 2 ) Stirrer
4. f ( -1 ) 7. g ( 1 )milk .
10 g ( -2 ) Coffee
Pentel Hot Water Manila Paper
2. f ( -2 ) 5. f ( 1 ) 8. g(0)

3. f ( 0 ) 6. g ( 2 ) 9. g ( -1 )
Procedures:

1. Present two glasses. The first glass contains coffee

while the second glass contains milk.
2. Then pour water on the first glass.
3. Stir the solution until the coffee dissolves.
4. What happen to the coffee and water?
5. What is the output after we combine the water and
the coffee?
6. Transfer the content of the first glass to the
second glass with milk.
7. Stir the solution until the milk dissolves from
water with coffee.

ACTIVITY 2: “LET US HAVE IT IN ALGEBRA “

10 minutes
GROUP 1: Assume that the glass with coffee is g(x) =
5x + 2, the glass with milk is f(x) = 4x – 6 and 1 is
the water, solve the composition f(g(x)) following the
procedure in the activity.

GROUP 2: Assume that the glass with coffee is g(x) =

3x -4 , the glass with milk is f(x) = 2x – 5 and -1
is the water, solve the composition f(g(x)) following
the procedure in the activity.

GROUP 3: Assume that the glass with coffee is g(x) = x

+ 8, the glass with milk is f(x) = 9x – 4 and -2 is
the water, solve the composition f(g(x)) following the
procedure in the activity.

GROUP 4: Assume that the glass with coffee is g(x) =

4x - 3, the glass with milk is f(x) = 7x – 6 and 2 is
the water, solve the composition f(g(x)) following the
procedure in the activity.

5 minutes ANALYSIS

1. How did you find the activity?

2. What are the difficulties you found while doing the
activity?
3. From the idea/concept you have learned from the
experiment, which served as the two glasses of water
and milk? How about the coffee?
4. Which represents the process of pouring water on the
glass with coffee? Pouring the coffee solution to the
milk?
5. What represents the coffee solution? Coffee with milk
solution?
6. How did you come up with your answer?
7. Enumerate the steps in solving for the final answer.

ABSTRACTION

COMPOSITION OF FUNCTION

It consists of two functions arranged in such a

way that the output of one function becomes the
input of the other functions.
It is the result of successive processing of
function
15 minutes
It is defined by
(f ○ g)(x) = f(g(x)) which is read as f of g of x.

Composite function is composed of two or more functions in

such a way the output of the first function becomes the
input of the other function. This can be represent as

g(f(x)) which can be read as g of f of x

APPLICATION: MATH LADDER

Direction:
1. The students will be group into two.
2. Each group will choose a representative.
3. The given will be flash on the screen, the first group
that can give the correct answer has the chance to
make the first move.
10 minutes 4. For each correct answer, the other member will roll
the die, the number that will appear on the die, is
the number of the steps they are going to move
forward.
5. But if the group gives the wrong answer, they will
move one step backward.
6. The first group that reach the finish line will be the
winner.

ASSESSMENT:
Directions: Perform the composition of functions.

f(x) = 2x + 2
g(x) = x2 + 1
10 minutes
1. f(g(2))
2. g(f(2))
3. f(g(1))
4. g(f(1))
5. f(g(0))

AGREEMENT:

Directions: Perform the composition of functions.

f(x) = 3x2 + 2x + 2
g(x) = x2 + 3

1. f(g(2))
2. g(f(2))
3. f(g(1))
4. g(f(1))
5. f(g(0))
