DEMONSTRATIVES

• We use this (singular) and these (plural) as
pronouns:
to talk about persons or things near us:

This is a book. These are books.


• to introduce people:
This is John.

These are my friends, Leah and Annie.

• WARNING:
We don’t say These are Leah and Annie.
We say This is Leah and this is Annie.
• to introduce ourselves to begin a
conversation on the phone:

Hello, this is David, Can I speak to Sally?


• We use that (singular) and those (plural):
to talk about things that are not near us:

That is a pen. Those are pens.


This is a chair.
That is a desk.
These are cell phones.
Those are memory sticks.
This is a computer.
Those are notebooks.
That is a day planner.
These are files.
That is a pen.
