DEMONSTRATIVES - This, That, These, Those

Demonstratives such as this, that, these, and those can be used as adjectives or pronouns to refer to nouns. They indicate whether a noun is nearby or distant from the speaker as well as whether it is in the present or past. This and these refer to things that are nearby or in the present, while that and those refer to things that are farther away or in the past. Demonstratives can also be used to describe people, objects, ideas, or information being discussed or mentioned.

This, That, These, Those

What’s a demonstrative?
1. Demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.

We can use them with a noun to qualify the object we’re referring to, or
just as a Pronoun if we don’t want to repeat the noun in the same
sentence.
Adjective (+ noun) Pronoun (without a noun

Singular This museum is interesting. This is interesting.


That sculpture is beautiful. That is beautiful.
This apple you gave me is This is delicious.
delicious.

Plural These tickets are expensive. These are expensive.


Those sculptures are very old. Those are very old.
Those horses over there are Those over there are fast.
fast.

2. Near or far?

This & These

Examples:

Try to repeat this exercise every morning and evening. (The exercise that I’m
showing you right now).
What does this music make you think of? (The music that’s been played right now).

Excuse me, is this seat free? (the seat near me).

You can use any one of these computers. (the computers near us or in the room we
are in).

Do you like these shoes? (The shoes near us).

That & Those

Examples:

Can I have some of that juice, please? (The juice I am pointing at that’s far from
me).

I’ve never been to that part of France. (A country that’s far away).

I need to paint those windows. (The windows far from where I stand).

Look at those mountains, they’re huge. (The ones in the distance).

3. Now or then?

This & These

Examples:

I’ll be with you some time this evening. (The evening that is coming today).
Johan seemed very happy this afternoon. (The afternoon that has just started)

We’ll wish we could come back to these days. (In the future, we will want to go back
to the days we are currently living).

I’m doing a lot of exercise these days. (around now).

That & Those:

Examples:

That week in 2020, we started quarantine. (Times far from now/today)

Do you remember that weekend at the pool party? (A weekend in the past)

Those were the days when I couldn’t stop thinking about you. (In a nostalgic way)

Those girls we met last night were gorgeous. (This is an event that happened in the
past).

4. Describing a person, a thing or idea.

Examples:

This class is really interesting. (The class we're in right now).

I didn’t know that, That’s amazing! (The information you’ve just given me).
These high-heels are killing me! (The high-heels I’m using now).

Those directions the guide gave us are useless. (Information we got in the past).

Examples:

Mum, these are my friends from Madrid.

Hey Charles, this is Brooke, the girl I was talking about the other day!

Look Natalie! This is Kenny the youtuber I was watching yesterday, he’s live now!

Example:

‘It's me Mario!’

‘Hello. This is Elizabeth Hale. May I speak to the manager?’
