UNIT OPERATION

OPERATING PRINCIPLE
- Over the road, an open compressor is driven by a 12 VDC
electric motor, powered by the 12 VDC alternator and the
vehicle battery. The vehicle 12 VDC also powers the evaporator
and condenser fans. It is therefore essential to shut-down the
unit when the vehicle engine has stopped.
- On standby, the electric motor of the unit drives a generator
which supplies the power necessary to run the evaporator and
condenser fans. The control is powered by a transformer
installed inside the unit.
TEMPERATURE CONTROL
- As soon as the set-point temperature has been reached,
regulation is obtained by the start-up and shut-down of the
electric motor.
- The condenser and evaporator fans shut down during the off
cycle.
NEVER RUN THE UNIT WITH NO GAS.
- WHEN THERE IS A LEAK ON THE SUCTION SIDE
THERE IS ABSORPTION OF HUMIDITY.
- WHEN THERE IS A LEAK OF THE DISCHARGE SIDE
THERE IS A LOSS OF REFRIGERATION OIL.
THIS CAN LEAD TO THE COMPRESSOR SEIZING UP.

PRODUCT LOADING
Proper air circulation in the truck body, i.e. that can move around
and through the load, is a critical element in maintaining product
quality during transport. If air cannot circulate completely around
the load, hot-spots during defrost can occur.
The use of packaging which enables air circulation in the lower
section is highly recommended, in order to enable the free flow of
air and its return to the evaporator. Appropriate packaging helps
to protect the products from the heat passing through the floor of
the vehicle.
Product stacking is another important factor in protecting the
product. Those generating heat, such as fruit and vegetables,
should be stacked in such a way to allow air to flow around the
products, to remove the heat they generate: the process is called
”air stacking” the product. Goods which do not generate heat, such
as frozen meat and other frozen food products, should be stacked
tightly in the centre of the box. All the products should be kept
well away from the sidewalls of the box, enabling air to circulate
between the box and the load; this prevents the heat filtering
through the sidewalls from damaging the products.
It is important to check the temperature of the products during
loading to ensure they are at the correct temperature for transport.
The refrigeration unit is designed to maintain the temperature of
products at the temperature at which it was loaded; it was not
designed to refrigerate warm products.
A FEW SUGGESTIONS
Before loading
- Pre-cool the inside of the insulated body, by lowering the
temperature for about 15 minutes.
- Remove the humidity inside the box by running a manual
defrost cycle. This is only possible when the inside temperature
is 3°C or less.

54
PRODUCT LOADING

- Evaporator fans are protected by safety grills. In the event of

heavy duty use of the unit, ice can accumulate on the grills. It is
therefore recommended to clean them regularly by means of a
small brush. The operation MUST be done when the unit has
been SHUT DOWN.
For loading purposes :
- Only load when the unit has been shut down.
- It is recommended to minimise the time when the door is open,
to avoid intake of hot air or humidity.
G
- Select the temperature in relation to the products transported.
- Check the core temperature of products during loading (probe
B
thermometer).
- Take care not to block the air intakes and outlets on the
evaporator section.
- Leave a free space of approximately:
- 6 to 8 cm between the load and the frontwall
- 20 cm between the top of the load and the roof,
- a few centimetres between the floor and the load using
gratings or suitable packaging.
- Do not forget to close the doors.
- Check your load, and see that nobody is shut inside the box.

Note :
For stationnary utilization, we recommend to place the body in the
shade.

IMPORTANT :
Never leave a unit more than one month without operating it.

55
RECOMMENDED TRANSPORT TEMPERATURES
A few general recommendations on product transport
temperatures are given below. The information is for reference
purposes only, the set-points required by the shipper or receiver
have priority.
More detailed information is available from your Carrier
Transicold distributor.

Product Set-point range

Bananas 15˚C 55˚F to 60˚F

Fresh fruit and + 4˚C to + 6˚C + 39˚F to +43˚F

vegetables

Fresh meat and + 2˚C + 36˚F

seafood

Dairy products + 2˚C to + 6˚C 36˚F to 43˚F

During delivery cycles that include frequent stops and door

openings, it is recommended to shut down the unit during the time
the box doors are open, in order to limit the accumulation of ice
on the evaporator.

56
STANDBY OPERATING GUIDELINES
