CPR Fieldwork Reflection

The document summarizes Denise Castaneda's reflections on receiving CPR certification. She observed that the instructors were experienced and the presentation included explanatory videos. While practicing CPR, Denise and her partner were initially slow but she quickly got the hang of it. The certification met her expectations by providing helpful tools to practice with and an informative but not too difficult test. Denise reflected that healthcare requires responsibility and acknowledged CPR skills could be useful if assisting someone infected with COVID-19.

Pre-Med Junior Fieldwork/ Certification Reflective Journal:

Name:
Denise Castaneda

A/B Day:

Advisory Teacher:
Fitz

Which of the following can you reflect on for this journal:
● Fieldwork, CPR, or Mental Health Certification? (Specify which in the box below)
CPR.

1. What is the public health function the organization/agency addresses?
(Assessment, Policy Development, Assurance)
Assurance.

2. What preconceived ideas (personal bias) did you have about the location or
certification?

None.

Closely Read your Surroundings:
Reflect on the following observations you made during your experience::
● sensory details
● signs posted
● languages you hear
● text used
● presenters
● colors of the offices and uniforms.
● does the location have a certain smell?
● what sounds do you hear?

What can you remember of your observations from your fieldwork/ certification based on
any of the above “close reading” ideas?

Observations:: The men teaching us seemed to have lots of experience and knew what
they were doing. They didn’t have full on uniforms but were dressed appropriately for the
occasion. They had a slideshow/presentation that included explanatory videos as well.

Consider your Responses:
Reflect on your emotional and physical reactions during the experience.
Observations:: I’m good at remaining calm but I’ve never really been great in remembering
things during emergency situations so when my partner and I did the practice CPR, we
were a bit slow at first but I quickly got the hang of it.

Were you left with questions/ concerns after your experience?
- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- public health-related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Observations:: I’m not sure if I’d like the pressure of being in an emergency healthcare
career but with practice I might. I don’t have any questions; it was pretty straight forward.

Summary Reflection
Reflect on specific highlights or observations from the day. What was a lesson (big or small)
you took away from your experience? Consider lessons that presented themselves in both
positive and negative ways.
Reflection:: I learned that I need to work on my self confidence if I want to be able to
help others too. I also learned that remaining calm won’t do as much if my mind goes
blank in an emergency situation.

How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and
include specific details (to the best of your ability) to help support your answer.
Reflection:: I’d say it met my expectations because they had enough helpful tools and
supplies to practice on. Their test wasn’t too hard either but made me feel like I was
well informed.

What connection can be made between what you saw or experienced and the functions of
Public Health?
Some suggestions are:
- the role of public health within this career path
- public health needs or challenges within the field you observed
3

- thoughts on how to address these needs

Reflection:: Healthcare is definitely a career that requires responsibility and should
never be underestimated but not just because of its importance.

Lastly, given our current circumstances with the Covid19 virus, how do you see your
fieldwork or certification applicable?
Reflection:: Well I can’t do much since everyone’s at home but if I ever do happen to
have contact with an infected person who needs CPR, I can put my skills to work.
