SENIOR PROJECT SELF-EVALUATION

Directions: Utilize this worksheet to help evaluate yourself and your project. Be as complete
and descriptive as possible. This self-evaluation should give the scoring team a clear picture of
what you accomplished in your project.

Name - Jasmyn Johnson Project Start Date – Second Semester, 2020

Title of Project - Eight Project Completion Date - April, 2020

1. In 40 words or more describe who your project benefited and how. In other words, what was
the impact of your project?

My project became a catalyst that completely changed my way of thinking. Though the public
product was less than impressive, I put a lot of energy into this challenge and it helped me to realize
what I truly wanted to do in the future. Overall, I know that if I would have been able to host the event I
wanted to, it would have impacted a lot more people but I’m glad that I got more out of it than I first
anticipated after school closed.

2. In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you. How was this a stretch for you?

Before this project, I had never written a full song on my own. The biggest challenge came in
working around the schedules of a plethora of busy theatre people that all had two to three projects on
their belts at one given time. I had the same problem, since auditioning for colleges takes a lot of travel
and a lot of time. This project forced me to face a lot of aspects of my life that I wasn’t truly ready to talk
or write about at the time, but I struggled through to produce a product from my soul.

3. List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you
learned/enhanced during your project.
➔ Self Advocating
◆ One struggle I had through the entirety of this project was finding a venue, and that
required me to email a LOT of directors and receive a LOT of No’s. But, it helped me
tackle my anxiety when it comes to official interactions and I eventually received help in
finding a venue that would have worked
➔ Lyrics
◆ My lyrics have always been weaker than my melodies, and these songs were not easy to
write. A lot of the words are ones that I have personally said in arguments or in journal
entries. I feel like I gained a better understanding of how to write with a purpose.
➔ Direction/Management
◆ Though the live performance didn’t work out in the end, I had organized an ensemble of
5 students at FC to play all of the (Future) orchestrations live. Having to work around
their schedules and my own was a challenge, but I helped to promote open
communication about ideas for them.
➔ Monologues
◆ I wrote a lot more dialogue for this show then I did lyrics for songs. The brainstorm
sheets are in my additional documentation, but I opened up about a lot of hard
moments in my life, which took a lot of courage.
➔ Advertising
◆ I was SO proud of the poster art I had commissioned from an FC student I work with in
theatre. I gave her a rough draft of what I envisioned and she delivered. I got posters
out into the world pretty quickly and the instagram I created was originally for
advertising, But I cleared it for the project itself.

4. List and describe 4-8 problems/obstacles/issues you encountered in your project, and briefly
describe how you solved each.
➔ Quarantine Lockdown
◆ The shutdown completely killed my original plans for my senior project, so I
elected to do an online account for the project instead.
➔ Scheduling
◆ Everyone was always busy and I went out of town 5-6 times last year during the
prime time to work on the project. And I had to work around my consultant’s
rehearsal schedule as well.
➔ Venues
◆ Because senior projects are meant to be done by the spring, every spring
production around the entire Hampton Roads area has already begun rehearsals
and performances. Finding a venue was another huge handicap in the rehearsal
process because I didn’t know what equipment would be available so I couldn’t
know for sure how many instrumentalists would even be able to play and be
heard.
➔ Personal Connection to the Topic
◆ My personal connection to the topic at hand was definitely a handicap before
and after quarantine. To keep the details to a minimum, I have little access to
mental health resources and was forced to use my own research as a coping
mechanism which created an unhealthy relationship with the project as a
whole.

5. List materials used.

➔ Instagram

6. List all people who helped you on the project and briefly describe the help given.
● Wesley N, (Senior)- Drums and main organizer of instrumentalists
● Corbin C. (Sophomore)- Bass player
● Jackson T. (Junior)- Pianist
● Jonah (Senior)- Guitarist
● Connor C. (GSA Sophomore)- Musical Aid
● Gabby J. (Sophomore)- Poster Art
● Riley R. (Senior)- Instrumentation/Lighting Design
● Maya O. (Senior)- Even Manager
● Dr. Sullivan- Venue Contact
● Mr. Kattwinkle- Consaultant
● Mrs. Curtis- General help with venues, talk back facilitation, etc
7. How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project? Explain the reason behind any changes from your proposal.

This project is not at all what I pictured it would be. I’m greatly disappointed that the circumstances
became too overwhelming and I wasn’t able to present the performance I wanted to. the problems I
did have during this process completely overshadowed any success and caused strain since the
beginning of the process. A lot of the changes were made because of elements out of my control but
I also feel that this project was a huge challenge I took on top of every other hill I had to climb this
year.

8. If given the opportunity, explain what you would have done differently now that you speak from
experience?
I would have spent less time trying to find the perfect venue in the beginning and start communicating
with volunteers to play MUCH earlier. The biggest thing this process was missing was time for the
product to truly flesh out on its own as we rehearsed. I wish I would have prepared for this performance
in a different way as opposed to the focus on improvisation as our driving force.

9. Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself?
I truly feel as though I learned more about myself during these months than I ever have before. This
project has allowed me to further understand my own emotions and triggers and how to live a more
fulfilled life in the future. I know that I have a long way to go, but focusing on therapy research for so
long was very helpful in my quest to discover true happiness within myself. The greatest thing I learned
from this project was how to separate myself from what I’ve been through, and though my project isn’t
the best, I’m glad I had decided to challenge myself so intensely.

10. What grade would you give yourself on the project? Justify the evaluation of your grade in at
least 25 words.
I would give myself a solid 73 for the project overall. Though the product didn’t have many of the things
I wanted it to have, I know that I put in so many hours of work on it. Writing a musical was something I
approached with no knowledge of and no idea where to begin. I stumbled through every obstacle that
could possibly be presented to me and I believe that relative to the amount of adversity presented to
me during this process and the insane notion of the project itself, I rose to the occasion the best I could
in my current situation.
