A singular noun can be put into plural form in some ways:


1. by adding suffix ‘s’

Singular : book chair table teacher


Plural : books chairs tables teachers

2. by adding suffix ‘es’ to the nouns with final hissing


sounds, such as: s, sh, ch, x, z.

Singular : class dish box watch


Plural : classes dishes boxes watches

3. by adding suffix ‘s’ to the nouns ending in ‘o’


Singular : potato tomato mango volcano
Plural : Potatoes tomatoes mangoes volcanoes

Exception: photo radio piano studio

4. by adding ‘ies’ to the nouns ending in ‘y’ but preceded


by consonant.

Notice the meanings and the use of the quantity expressions


above :
1. a lot of means ‘a large number of’ or ‘a large quantity
of’ and is used for (+), (-), ( ?) sentences.
2. many means ‘a large number of’ and is used for (-) and
( ?) sentences.
3. Much means ‘a large quantity of’ and is used for (-) and
( ?) sentences.
4. a few means 'a small number of’ and is usually used for
(+) sentences only.
5. Some means ‘a small number of’ or ‘small quantity of’
and are usually used for (+) sentences.
6. Any means ‘a small number of’ or ‘small quantity of’
and are usually used for (-) and ( ?) sentences.

Exercise 2. Substitute a few and a little in place of a small


number or a small quantity. Substitute a lot of,
many, much in place of a large number or a large
quantity.

Example: John drinks a large quantity of coffee


John drinks a lot of coffee
I need a small quantity of sugar
I need a little sugar
