10.1 Electronic Crane Information System (ECIS)

The electronic crane information system ECIS combines several

devices which provide important information to the crane opera-
tor, ensuring that the crane is operated within the parameters
specified by the manufacturer (Z 41 303):
-- Overload cut--off device (load limit device LMI).
-- Telescoping information system (see Sect. 12).
-- Display of numerous crane functions, for example, support
pressure, tilt, crane configuration, lifting capacities etc.
-- Warning (optical and acoustic) in case of prohibited condi-
tions.

The crane information system used (including load limit device)

is an operating aid. It provides the crane operator with essential
information concerning crane data such as length and angle of
the boom, sheave head height, nominal lifting capacity, the total
load suspended from the boom, etc. and gives warning when an
overload condition is being approached or when the hook block
gets too close to the boom head.

Before commencing operations, set the information system to

the desired language (Z 41 304). Information on this setting can
be found in Sect. 10.1.5.

-- This safety device is no substitute for the judgement and

experience of the crane operator and use of recognised
safe operating procedures for the use of cranes.
The crane operator still carries the ultimate responsibil-
ity for safe operation of the crane.
-- Pay particular attention to the manufacturer’s manual
(PAT) in part 5 of this documentation.

Safety Equipment 10

If, when raising a load or lowering the main boom with load, the
permitted load moment/the permitted load is exceeded, both the
load--moment--increasing and load--moment reducing move-
ments are disabled along with the ”raise load on hook” function.
”Lower load on hook” is permitted.

The load limit device should only be activated in an emer-

gency situation. Under no circumstances may it be used as
a standard operating tool.

Before a load is raised, its weight must be known. The safety de-
vice may not be used to determine the weight (see Sect. 10.1.7).

The load limit device must be set by the crane operator to the
corresponding crane configuration. This means that the
crane operator must also change the load limit device when
the crane configuration is changed.
The crane operator is responsible for the correct setting by
acknowledging the crane configuration.
The load limit device only functions automatically when the
correct setting has been made.

Once an overload condition has been switched off by the load

limit device, load moment reducing movements can be carried
out to move a freely suspended load out of the overload range
again, back into the normal operating range. In this case the lumi-
nous pushbutton (128) must be pressed. These load moment re-
ducing movements may only be enabled if they do not represent
a hazard. Make sure that this is the case when the luminous
pushbutton is pressed (Z 41 222).

650--1100--039 5/183
10

6/183 650--1100--039
Safety Equipment 10

The load may only be taken up by the hoist in hook op-

eration:
* for main boom operation as a rule hoist 1,
* for operation with the luffing fly jib ONLY hoist 1.

If the load is still in contact with the ground and raising

of the hoist has been switched off, the load is too heavy.
Enabling the ”Raise main boom or fly jib” movement is
not permitted under these circumstances!

This movement is not to be used to lift the load under

any circumstances!

The central unit of the load limit device is fitted in the switch
box “X2” on the superstructure.

It is essential for the operating safety of the crane that the

load limit device functions in its original condition.

-- Risk of crushing!

The swinging--out of the load during switch--off cannot

always be avoided, even with the use of automatic
safety devices!
It can be avoided only through customised accelera-
tions/speeds of all crane movements!
Also take note of the continuous display of the load
moment with preliminary warning at 90% of the per-
missible load moment prior to switch--off.

-- The risk of the load limit device being influenced by

high--frequency radiation is minimised by the latest
technology (shielding). It cannot, however, be com-
pletely excluded -- in particular under extreme condi-
tions, for example near powerful transmitters.

10.1.1 System Start

The ECIS system is started automatically when the ignition is

switched on. First a mask appears for adjusting the brightness of
the display (Z 41 299)
∗ press key (151a) to reduce the brightness of the display.
∗ press key (151b) to increase the brightness of the display.
This adjustment is only possible as long as the mask is displayed.
After this the company logo is displayed (Z 48 860).
Then, depending on the condition that the crane was in before it
was shut down, the corresponding input mask is displayed.

10.1.5 Setting the Operating Mode

Before commencing work and/or setting the load limit device, se-
lect the desired language for the crane information system.
To this end, switch the function display “K” to level 4 (service
level), (Z 41 301).
Now press the key (151f, Z 41 301).
The image display of the crane is replaced by the language selec-
tion display (Z 41 302).
Now press keys (1) to (4) on the keypad (150) to select the de-
sired language:
∗ key (150--1): German
∗ key (150--2): French
∗ key (150--3): English
∗ key (150--4): Spanish

To ensure that the load limit device functions properly, it must:

-- be set by the crane operator in accordance with the crane
configuration before work is commenced (as soon as the con-
figuration is achieved) after the ignition/engine is switched
on.
-- reset by the crane operator in accordance with the new oper-
ating mode once the crane configuration has been changed.

Only when the load limit device has been correctly set by the
crane operator in accordance with the current operating
mode/crane configuration, can it operate automatically.

Risk of overturning! RISK OF BREAKAGE!

The lifting capacities outlined in the load capacity tables
represent 100% of the permitted maximum load for each
crane configuration. If these limit values are exceeded,
there is a risk of the crane overturning and/or crane com-
ponents and auxiliary equipment breaking.

The operating mode can be set either by entering the ”DS” code
number directly or by following the menu prompts.
∗ Setting the operating mode directly: see Sect. 10.1.5.1
∗ Setting the operating mode following menu prompts: see

tion/erection operation”) (Z 41 242).

Risk of accidents!
The selection made for the current configuration affects
all other values which are subsequently requested and
which must be set by the crane operator.
It must therefore be made correctly in accordance with
the actual configuration of the crane. Only then can the
load limit device monitor operation of the crane correctly
later.

10.1.6 Inclination display

Before carrying out any work with the crane, the crane must be
supported on outriggers and horizontally aligned (see operating
instructions of the crane chassis).

The current tilt of the crane can be checked on the ECIS display
in the following manner:

Press function button (151e) in level (K2), (Z 41 258). A cross ap-

pears which displays the current angle of inclination by means of
a bar display (Z 41 259).
The maximum permitted angles of inclination are:
* 1° in the transverse direction
* 3° in the longitudinal direction.

To switch from this “reduced view” (Z 41 259) to the full screen

size (Z 41 260), press the function button (151h) in level (K2), (Z
41 258).

Note that the resolution switches across the screen in the

“large display”. The outer limit in this case is 3° (instead of
1° for the “reduced view”).

As soon as the permitted maximum tilt of 3° in the longitudinal

direction, 1° in the transverse direction -- has been exceeded, a
warning buzzer sounds and the symbol “tilt display” appears in
the line for error messages (upper line of the ECIS display).

Risk of overturning!
If the permitted tilt is exceeded you must:
1. Put down load.
2. Realign the crane with the outriggers.

10.1.7 Load Monitoring Assembly

(Z 41 261)

With the help of the computer of the load limit device it is possible
to check the weight of the raised load (net load).

The load monitoring assembly may not be used to calcu-

late the load, but is used to check the weights of loads
that have been previously calculated in order to calculate
better the load hoist and to avoid potentially hazardous
situations.

Before raising the load, the maximum load corresponding to the

driving operation must be determined. It is displayed in relation
to the selected operating mode on the display in the field MAX (F).

Load monitoring

1. With a free hanging hook block (without load, with load han-
dling device) hold down pushbutton (151g). The lifting tackle
is tared in order to maintain a net load display.

2. Release the pushbutton again after a short time.

3. Raise the load with the hoist.

The display TARA (E) now shows the net load (actual load
on the hook without load handling device).

If the position of the boom is changed from 2.5° or the ignition is

switched on/off the taring function is automatically deactivated
and the gross load displayed on the load display ”G”.

The gross load includes -- besides the weight of the load -- the
weight of the hook block, the hoist rope and all load handling de-
vices. The net load is the actual load on the hook block without
the load handling devices. Display errors are possible because
of outside factors, e.g. wind, which have an effect on both the
crane and the load.

The load may only be raised with the hoist. Raising the
load by extending the telescopic sections or luffing cylin-
ders is prohibited.

10.1.9 Support Forces

10.1.9.1 Monitoring and Displaying the Outrigger Support

Forces

Risk of accidents!
For support, follow the procedural directions given in
Sect. 12 “Outrigger”.
If the vertical outrigger cylinders are extended -- in spite
of the prescribed procedure -- up to the stop, incorrect
support pressure readings can result.

The current support forces are recorded by pressure contacts in

the vertical outrigger cylinders. They are displayed in the super-
structure on the ECIS display in display (Z 41 266) after pressing
key (151d, Z 41 265) in level ”K2”.
Press key (151h) in (Z 41 266) to switch to large display.

The support forces are also displayed on the crane chassis. This
is described in detail in the operating instructions of the crane
chassis, Part 2, Sect. 12 ”Outrigger”.

The following limit values may not be exceeded on even and

load--supporting ground and standard outrigger pads (ø 800
mm):
-- front, left and right, max. 185 t.
-- rear, left and right, max. 185 t.

Depending on the load--carrying capacity of the ground

at the installation site of the crane, it is possible that the
permissible support forces are considerably less.
Observe the respective permissible limit values when
setting up supports and during crane operation (see also
Sect. 10.1.9.2).

When the set limit values are exceeded in the upper line, left (Z
41 266), the outrigger symbol is displayed and a warning buzzer
sounds (can be switched off using key “151f”).
There is no shut down via the load limit device. The crane opera-
tor must pay attention to these warnings and react accordingly.

When the permitted limit values are exceeded there is a

risk of accidents!

10.1.10 Setting the Parameters

The control parameters may only be set by trained person-

nel. Separate training is required for this.

The customer settings, in particular the power/current set-

tings, offer a number of possibilities to change the driving
behaviour of the crane to such an extent that dangerous
reactions can result. Excessively high currents can result in
prohibited knocking in the hydraulic system which can lead
to increased wear in the system.

For safety reasons, an access code is required to adjust the

control parameters. This 4--digit PIN code, which was en-
tered ex works when the crane was commissioned, can be
changed at any time by the authorised user.

It is prohibited to pass this code number onto unauthorised

third parties.

If it is proved that this code has been passed onto unautho-

rised persons, and this results in a crane accident, the per-
son issuing the code can also be held responsible.

Adjust valve flow manually

For every crane movement, a specific valve output flow is as-

signed by moving the corresponding control lever. The lever path
is at the same time divided into 2 sections. This also applies for
the output signal. These main values can be adjusted separately
for each movement.

The setting of a turning point enables the reaction of the crane

to the lever movement to be redefined. It is thus possible to create
more sensitive reaction in the lower range of the lever and a less
sensitive movement in the upper lever range.

The valve currents can be adjusted for hoist 1, hoist 2, luffing

gear, slew gear, telescopic sections and auxiliary winch.

10.1.13 Operating Range Limit

For operation of the crane with the luffing fly jib, the op-
erating range limit may not be used!

To ensure that the crane or boom does not enter existing hazard-
ous areas -- such as, for example, near overhead power lines --
the crane operator can limit the operating range.

After pressing the key (151g, Z 44 300) at level 3 of the ECIS

console, the display operating range limits appears(Z 41 689).
keys (151) can be used to branch off to the desired limits.

The presentation (Z 41 689) varies, depending on which limits

are activated.
The respective permitted operating range is displayed in white
and the non--permitted (blocked) operating range is shown in
black.
The displayed limits are not to scale and serve only as a visual
aid.

Make sure that you deactivate the activated limits as

soon as work in a limited operating range has been com-
pleted.
Otherwise the limits may be applied for subsequent
crane operations, causing sudden deactivation of crane
movements and swinging out of the hook block/load.
Risk of accidents!

10.1.13.1Slewing Angle Limit

(Z 41 689, Z 41 691)

The crane operator can define a permitted rotation/slewing range

(= area between left and right angle limit).
20° before an angle limit position is reached, the slewing speed
is automatically reduced.
When the angle limit is reached, the slewing movement is auto-
matically shut down.

In spite of automatic reduction and/or shutdown of the

slewing speed/movement, always slew the crane at a
sensible and appropriate speed.
Otherwise, the movement is stopped abruptly and the
hook block/load swings out.

Press key (151a, Z 44 301). Display (Z 44 302) appears. There

the following values are displayed:

-- Field “A”: Current slewing angle

-- Field “B”: Angle limit, left
-- Field “C”: Angle limit, right.

The displayed crane symbol shows the 0° position of the super-

structure to the carrier (position “to the rear”). Only the numerical
value for the current slewing angle in field ”A” changes during
rotation -- when rotating clockwise direction from 0° to 360°. The
boom position at the crane symbol does not change.

Set and monitor left--hand angle limit

1. First check that monitoring of the left--hand slewing angle

limit is not activated (Z 44 304).

If a variable of the operating range limit is active, it cannot be

reset.

When monitoring is activated, symbol (D) appears beneath the

left--hand angle limit data (B).
In this case, press key (151a) to deactivate the monitoring func-
tion. Symbol (D) disappears.
In addition, symbol (E) appears in the status line. However no dif-
ferentiation is made between the left or right angle limit.

In this context, the following symbols can appear in the display

fields in the status line (Z 44 305):
-- (a) : Monitoring of the right--hand slewing angle limit
active
-- (b) : Monitoring of the right--hand slewing angle limit
active and limit value exceeded
-- (c) : Monitoring of the left--hand slewing angle limit active

2. Slew the boom into the operating position which you want to
be set as the extreme operating position on the left.
The display in field (A) changes accordingly (Z 44 306).

Please refer to the information in Sect. 8 “Slewing the Super-

structure”.
In particular make sure that the selected angle limit (= shut-
off point) actually ensures sufficient clearance to the hazard-
ous area (e.g. swinging out of the hook block after the crane
movement is shut down)!
All crane movements must be carried out at suitably safe
speeds!

3. Press key (151b). The current slewing angle (field“A”) is de-

fined as the left--hand angle limit. The corresponding angle
specification (in this case: 73.6°) appears in field “B” (Z 44

The specified conditions (activated/deactivated, angle limit and

resulting rotation range) remain until they are changed again as
described. The stored values remain saved even after the igni-
tion has been switched off.

10.1.13.2Luffing Angle Limit

The crane operator can set a permitted luffing range (= area be-
tween upper and lower luffing angle limit).
When the limit position has been reached, the luffing movement
is automatically shut down.

In spite of the automatic shutoff, the corresponding crane

movement should always be carried out at a suitable speed.
Otherwise, the movement is stopped abruptly and the hook
block/load swings out.

Press key (151b, Z 44 310). Display (Z 44 311) appears. There

the following values are displayed:

off point) actually guarantees a sufficient safety clearance in
extreme situations (e.g. the hook block swinging out after a
crane movement is switched off)!
All crane movements must be carried out at suitably safe
speeds!

The final setting of this limit value is done in corresponding fash-

ion, analogous to the way described in Sect. 10.1.13.1 for the
slewing angle limit. Pay attention to all information given.

If a variable of the operating range limit is active, it cannot be

reset.

Automatic reduction of the speed of a crane movement

(slewing) BEFORE the shutoff point is reached only oc-
curs in the case of the slewing angle limit.
In all other cases there is no such reduction.
Therefore the crane operator must adapt the speed of the
crane movement as he approaches such a shutoff point.
Otherwise, the movement is stopped abruptly and the
hook block/load swings out.

In this context, the following symbols can appear in the display

fields in the status line (Z 42 900):
-- (a) : monitoring of the upper luffing angle limit activated
-- (b) : monitoring of the upper luffing angle limit activated
and limit value exceeded
-- (c) : monitoring of the lower luffing angle limit activated
-- (d) : Monitoring of the lower luffing angle limit active

10.1.13.4Virtual Walls

The crane operator has the option of defining one or two (virtual)
walls, in order to limit the permitted operating range.

When the limit position is reached the corresponding crane

movement is automatically shut down.

Automatic speed reduction only occurs BEFORE the

slewing limit point is reached.
In all other cases there is no such reduction.
Therefore the crane operator must adapt the speed of the
crane movement as he approaches such a shutoff point.
Otherwise, the movement is stopped abruptly and the
hook block/load swings out.

Below the procedure for “wall 1” is described. The same proce-

dure applies for “wall 2”.

10.2 Bridging load limit device

(Z 41 222)

10.2.1 Bridging the shutdown of the load moment reducing

movements

If a prohibited overload condition has occurred, the load moment

reducing movements are shut down by the load limit device. Only
lowering the load on the hook is not permitted.

Once an overload condition has been switched off by the load

limit device, load moment reducing movements can be carried
out to move a freely suspended load out of the overload range
again, back into the normal operating range. In this case the lumi-
nous pushbutton (128) must be pressed.

These load moment reducing movements may only be

enabled if they do not represent a hazard. Make sure that
this is the case before pressing the luminous pushbut-
ton.

If the load is still in contact with the ground and raising

of the hoist has been switched off, the load is too heavy.
Enabling the ”Raise main boom or fly jib” movement is
not permitted under these circumstances!

This movement is not to be used to lift the load under

any circumstances!

The load limit device (LMI) can be monitored by means of the

overload recorder (OPTIONAL).
An overload recorder which is activated as optional equipment
can be read off and evaluated only by trained Service personnel.
An acoustic warning signal also sounds when there is an over-
load.

cases, for example in case of repairs, fitting a rope etc.
This can only be done by authorized personnel who are
familiar with the operation of the crane!
The bridging of the load limit device may not be used to
increase the load moment under any circumstances.
Lifting a load with the load limit device bridged is prohib-
ited!

-- Limit switch “fly jib high position”: S 6.1

These switches may only be bridged in certain cases

when the luffing fly jib is configured (see Sect. 19 ”Luf-
fing fly jib”). The jib top section must remain on the
ground at all times (for bridging “high position).

10.3.4 Bridging ”Lower Luffing Gear”/”Slew Gear” -- Shut

Down

When a boom angle of 15° is reached when lowering the main

boom, the sensor “S92.1” shuts down the crane movement
“lower luffing gear” and “rotate superstructure” (Z 40 410).

Press pushbutton (113) to bridge the slew gear brake and ”lower
luffing gear”. The release is indicated by the lamp in the pushbut-
ton lighting up (Z 46 731).

-- Rotation of the superstructure over the area of the outrig-

ger struts is prohibited at a main boom angle of less than
15°.
-- Lowering the main boom below a 15° boom angle is pro-
hibited in the area of the outrigger struts.
In both cases the main boom would collide with the out-
rigger struts.

When the superstructure is in the 0° or 180° position and the me-

chanical superstructure locking device is engaged, “lower luffing
gear” is not shut down at a main boom angle of 15°. In this case
the sensor “S44.2” is activated, the main boom can be fully low-
ered (Z 40 412 and Z 40 468).

When the superstructure is in the 180° position and the main

boom has been fully lowered, there is a RISK OF DAMAGE
to the luffing cylinders through the luffing cylinder support
that may be fitted on the crane chassis (optional).
