Visit to the Aboitiz MakBan Geothermal Powerplant

Brief Summary of the Tour

The MakBan Geothermal Power Plant, located at Bay, Laguna, is the only “indigenous base load plant in Luzon,”
which means a power plant that is capable of producing continuous supply of electricity, satisfying a minimum power
demand requirement. The Power Plant is able to utilize geothermal energy, a well known renewable source of
energy, to produces high pressure and temperature steam that subsequently drives a turbine, thereby generating
electricity in the process. The Power Plant is currently being run by AP Renewables, Inc. a subsidiary of Aboitiz Power
Corporation.
Upon arriving, the class was first oriented at the Cleanergy Center about the history of the power plant and the main
processes of the said plant. From here, we were also able to learn that the Philippines, being blessed with a
topography that hides vast geothermal vents underneath the crust, is the world’s second largest producer of
geothermal energy (second only to US), accounting for 12% of the nation’s electric power supply. It is here we were
also able to learn, that despite its promising characteristics, the country still mainly relies on coal and gas fired power
plants due to the small capacity and unreliability of renewable energy sources such as geothermal powerplant. After
the orientation, we went to the plant grounds; however, we only saw the cooling tower since different parts of the
plant were being closed due to maintenance.

Key Processes
Throughout the trip, we were able to understand the basic key processes of a geothermal power plant, which
consists of the following: Raw Material Sourcing, Removal of Impurities, Power Generation through Turbine, And
Condensation and Collection of Steam. A direct application of the topic we have learned in ChE 122, passing steam
over a turbine causes the rotor blades to turn rapidly, and this in turn causes the steam to lose some of its energy
and heat in the process, causing it to cool down. This is further cooled down using a cooling tower, producing cooling
water that can be reused and circulated all over the plant.

Operations of the Plant

Different parts of the plant are situated in 2 different provinces, namely Laguna and Batangas, and divided into 12
different units, all capable of generating electricity which amounts to a total capacity of 450 MW. As for the 4 units
situated in Bay, around 150 MW of electricity is being generated per year. Being a provider of electricity in the
Southern parts of Luzon, the plant operates continuously 365 days a year to meet the demand from its consumers,
even having shifts during the Christmas holidays. As for its HSE practices, the plant itself strictly imposes the rule of
PPE inside its plant premises, even requiring additional clothing and tools to ensure the safety of its visitors. As for
its employees, everyone is always required to maintain proper PPE whenever inside the plant, as mentioned by the
supervisor and plant tour guide.

Engineers in the Plant

According to Ms. Kim, the plant employs several engineers in different fields to maintain operations of the plant.
Only 2 chemical engineers are currently working in the said power plant under the Environment Division (if I’m not
mistaken) whose main job is to check the safety regulatory practices of the plant.

Comments on the Event

Overall, it feels great and fulfilling to finally visit a chemical plant utilizing renewable energy source, which I think
should be something that the chemical industry should be investing on, as discoveries and breakthroughs on
renewable energy would be the key to a sustainable and cleaner future. Through the tour, the helpfulness of the
plant personnel (being accommodating and jolly at the same time) and the learnings that accompanied it, I can finally
say that the MakBan Geothermal Power plant is an excellent plant to visit if one wants to know more about
renewable energy source. The schedule and itinerary is also just enough, (albeit traffic caused a major delay in the
ETA at UP).
