Test Report: Winding DF & CAP (Tan δ)

The document summarizes the results of a Tan Delta test conducted on the windings of a transformer. The Tan Delta test measures the dissipation factor (tan δ) of the insulation, which indicates its deterioration. The test measures the ratio of the resistive and capacitive components of the insulation under an applied sinusoidal voltage. The results showed tan δ values below 0.5% for the primary and secondary windings, indicating healthy insulation.

Winding DF & CAP (Tan δ)

Tan Delta is a diagnostic test conducted on the insulation of cables and winding. It is used to measure the
deterioration in the cable. The Tan Delta test works on the principle that any insulation in its pure state acts
as a capacitor. It is equal to the ratio of the power dissipated in the insulation in watts to the product of
effective voltage & current in volt ampere when tested under sinusoidal voltage.
The healthiness of an electrical insulator can be determined by the ratio of the resistive component to the
capacitive component. This ratio is commonly known as tanδ or tan delta. Sometimes it is also referred to
as dissipation factor.

From the diagram above, it is cleared that the

ratio, IR to IC is nothing but tanδ or tan delta.

Connection Diagram:

Procedure:
1. All busbar connections were removed from the terminals of the transformer.
2. All windings of primary & secondary were short circuited using bare braided jumper.
3. Measurement settings were verified according to the test requirements.
4. Connection was given according to the above connection diagram.
5. Then tan delta was measured between HV to earth, LV to earth & HV to LV.
6. Assessment was conducted & the result was recorded automatically in the CPC 100.

Comments:
The dissipation factor (tanδ) is very small – typically less than 0.5%, which can be presumed as given when
measuring healthy electrical machine insulation, the dissipation factor and the power factor differ in a
negligible amount and can be assumed to have the same value.
