Understanding the Drawing Scale Tutorial

Objects are always drawn at a 1:1 scale. If an object is 10′ long, you’ll draw it 10′ long.
You can control the drawing scale to fit an entire design on a piece of standard-sized paper.

To define the drawing scale

scale
1. From the Help menu, open the drawing file associated with this tutorial.
The polygon is just over 3″ wide and 4″ high. This will easily fit on an 8.5x11″ piece
of paper from your printer.
2. From the File menu, choose Page Layout. The Page Layout dialog box is displayed.
This shows you the printer page and how your drawing will fit.

3. Click the Overlay Drawing in Preview checkbox. You can see the drawing will easily
fit on that 8.5x11″ piece of paper.
4. Click OK to close the Page Layout dialog.
5. Click to select the polygon. The Data Entry Fields are displayed.
6. Type 10′ in the Width Data Entry field and press ENTER.
7. Use the Pan and Zoom tools to zoom out and fit the drawing on the workspace.

8. From the File menu, choose Page Layout. The dialog appears. Notice the polygon
does not fit on the piece of paper.

9. From the Scale drop-down menu choose Architectural, and then choose 1″=8″
(1/8). This adjusts the polygon, but notice it still does not fit on the page.
10. In the Scale Ratio text field, type 1″ = 1′. In other words, one inch equals one foot,
drawing scale. That still didn’t quite work.
11. From the Scale drop-down, choose 3/4″ = 1′ (1/16). The polygon now fits on the
page.

12. Click OK.

13. From the File menu, choose Page Layout. The Page Layout dialog box is displayed.
14. Select the Show Page Breaks in Drawing Window checkbox to display the printer
margins and click OK.

15. Zoom out so you can see the printer page and the drawing, based on that scale set.

16. Select the polygon then type 45′ in the Data Entry Width field and press ENTER.
17. Type 20′ in the Height Data Entry field and press ENTER.
18. Zoom and Pan to fit the drawing on the page.

19. From the File menu, choose Page Layout. The dialog box is displayed.
20. Choose 1/4″= 1′ (1/48) from the Scale drop-down menu. It’s still not fitting on the
page.
21. Choose 1/8″= 1′ (1/96) from the Scale drop-down menu and click OK.

22. Pan and Zoom to view the page.

The Page Layout dialog also has an option to fit to the page. That automatically sets a
drawing scale, based on a best fit.

To scale a drawing with real world measurements

1. Open the example file Secretary Desk vc3—Trimetric, which is available in the
application’s installation directory.
2. From the File menu, choose Page Layout. The dialog is displayed. The drawing is
much too large to fit at the 1:1 scale.
3. Select the Overlay Drawing in Preview checkbox so you can see the drawing relative
to the print page.
4. From the Setup Mode drop-down menu, choose Single Page, and choose the
Architectural scale.
5. Choose 1/4″= 1′ (1/48) from the Scale drop-down menu. The drawing’s a little too
small at this drawing scale.
6. Next, try 1″ = 1′, from the Scale drop-down menu. This scale fits much better.
7. Click the Align Center button to align the drawing to the center of the page and click
OK.
8. Use the Pan and Zoom tools to position the drawing on the workspace.
9. From the Verify menu, choose Dist Pt-Pt. The Distance dialog appears.

10. On the top of the left object, click the top right edge and drag to the left edge of the
right object. Notice it measures the real world distance, but we know it will fit on the
8.5x11″ printed page.
