To achieve this, web tension

control is crucial for the following reasons:

1) Web tension aÆects the geometry of the web, such as the apparent length
and width of the web.
2) Web tension control helps reduce wrinkling. In particular, high process
tension will help decrease the wrinkling caused by a misalignment of rollers. However,
excessively high tension will cause more wrinkling to occur on very thin materials.
Hence, appropriate web tension control is very important.
3) Web tension aÆects the wound-in tension and the shape of the Ønal product
roll and, hence, the roll quality.
For these reasons, it is essential in web winding systems to control the web

1) Taper tension control for the Unwind Roll

When the unwind roll is at its maximum diameter the roll can be very heavy. Because of the
heavy weight of a full master roll a high braking force is required to achieve smooth running at
fast speeds. As the roll reduces in diameter however, it also reduces in weight, and the amount of
braking force required is much less. The Daco Taper tension system for the Unwind or Master
Roll, continuously monitors the diameter of the master roll, and adjusts the braking force, to
exactly match the current roll diameter. Without taper tension, as the roll becomes smaller,
unless the tension is reduced manually by the operator, the web can be put under too much
tension, causing it to snap or stretch. If a full roll is put on without increasing the tension, the
master roll will not be braked enough, which may cause the web to crease or wander, which will
lead to poor wind quality of the finished roll. With taper tension, the unwind tension only needs
to be set once, and then all adjustments are made automatically, leaving the operator free to
concentrate on inspection or other things.

2) Taper tension control for the Rewind Roll

This is basically the reverse of the Unwind system. As the rewind roll increases in diameter the
Rewind tension is automatically increased. Without taper tension on the rewind, when winding
large rolls, the web will become slack and unstable, as the roll gets larger and heavier. This again
will leading to poor wind quality of the finished roll. If rolls larger than 250mm are to be
rewound taper tension is recommended.

Conclusion
Taper tension control will give better quality finished rolls, and eliminates the need for the
operator to be frequently adjusting the tension settings manually as the roll sizes change. This in
turn leads to more efficient running, especially when rewinding delicate products such as films
or perforated materials.
