LIGHTHOUSE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

RE-ENTRY PLAN 2020 -21

This document is intended to be updated and changed as new information,
circumstances, mandates and decisions evolve. It is intended to be a
framework to partner with state implementation guides and local city, district
and government policies.

Lighthouse Christian School was originally set to open on August 4th. We have taken an extra
week in order to assess, strategize and fully prepare to safely open our campus to our students
on August 10th.

Lighthouse Christian School strongly believes that it is in the best interest of our students to
return to campus for in-class instruction for the Fall of 2020. We appreciate your participation
in our recent survey and have used the results to guide our Re-Entry Plan. We look forward to
having our students back on campus in August.

If you have a child that cannot return to campus because they are considered high risk, have
been exposed to or currently have the COVID 19 virus, or if you have another compelling reason
why distance learning is the preferred option for your child, please submit a request to the
following link and enter the information requested - https://forms.gle/rDFjTzXf9PbQUTdn9
to be considered for the online option. The application should be completed no later than
Friday, July 31st. If approved, you will be contacted with details of how to set up at-home
distance learning for the time period requested before returning to on-campus learning. All
medical and health conditions will of course be considered for long-term distance learning. We
understand some families are not comfortable returning to school on the 10th and would like to
begin the first several weeks at home. These requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
This option for temporary, at-home distance learning will be available through Labor Day,
Monday, September 7th and will be re-evaluated at that time. This option is set-up to be full-
day class participation and students will be required to remotely “attend” all classes throughout
the day. Because temporary at-home learning is an elective option, parents/guardians will still
be responsible for all tuition and fees. The importance of in-person learning is well
documented. Our goal is to provide a safe, structured learning environment that successfully
brings our students back to full in-class campus learning with no lapse in academic
advancement.

The LCS protocol for School Re-Entry will align with the standards set by the Tennessee
Association of Christian Schools, and recommendations from local, state and government
agencies, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. We should all understand the ever-changing
threat of COVID 19, and that protocol, principles and guidelines may change. We will be diligent
in our efforts to stay current on all aspects of COVID 19 and will be transparent in our decisions

1
and obligations as a result of that information. What will not change is our priority which is
always the health and safety of our students, their families, and our community.

LEVEL 1 RETURN TO CAMPUS

Definitions
Social Distancing – General -the act of keeping people separated with the goal of limiting the
possibility of contagion passing between individuals.

In Class Distancing – When possible, K5 – 12th grade teachers will rotate into classes instead of
students thereby lessening the likelihood of undesired contact between students. Students will
have assigned seating. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that the spacing of 3 to 6
feet distance seating provides the necessary distancing. We have calculated the square footage
of each room that will be occupied by our students, and have determined how many
desks/students can be safely present in each room.

Additional In-Class Guidelines will Include:

• K5 - Cubbies will be used for bedding only and will be stored in plastic, labeled bags
when not in use. Coats and other items can be hung on the designated hook for each
child and set apart for distancing. Students will stagger retrieving bedding or items in
their designated hook/Shelf area. Other belongings such as materials and books will
stay at their assigned desk. Nap mats will be disinfected after use every day.
• 1st – 3rd Coats, backpacks and lunch boxes will have an assigned area for each student.
Students will stagger retrieving these items. All other belongings such as materials and
books will stay in their assigned desk.
• 4th –6th No Locker Assignments - Students will use backpacks and keep belongings with
them and text books at their assigned seating.
• These practices will be continually evaluated and adjusted as needed or directed

Hallway Distancing:

K5 – 12th Students and Staff will be instructed to always walk on the right side of the hallways at
class change and anytime the hallway is used to go from one point to another.
7th - 12th Locker visits and hallway usage will be staggered and scheduled to limit the cross-over
of students. Students will be instructed to maintain social distancing during hallway and class-
to-class travel. Masks are required in the hallways.

Building-to-Building Distancing - Students will be instructed to maintain the optimal 6 feet

apart distancing and can remove their masks while outdoors but will need to wear masks upon
entering buildings.

2
Restroom Breaks:

• K5-6 Will be spaced out and staggered by grades and will be limited to 2 students at
time.
• 7 – 12th Will be as needed understanding that restrooms will be limited to 2 students at
a time.
• All students are required to use hand hygiene before and after restroom usage.
• All restrooms will be cleaned and sanitized regularly throughout the day.

PE/GYM Distancing – Especially now, it is important for students to stay active. Students will
continue to participate in P.E. with attention given to the types of activities that are most
conducive to student safety and well-being while adhering to appropriate distancing. Hand
sanitizer will be used before entering and upon leaving P.E. Masks cannot be worn during any
physical exertion where breathing intensifies. Distancing and disinfecting will be strictly
enforced. Outdoor activities will be optimal. Locker room usage will be staggered and limited
to groups where social distancing is feasible.

Athletics/Practices/Sports Distancing – TO BE DETERMINED

Our participation in athletic activities and competition will be determined by guidance from the
Tennessee Athletic Association of Christian Schools, Middle Tennessee Athletic Conference, and
our accrediting agencies. This is an ongoing and constantly changing decision making process
and we will communicate information and decisions as it becomes available.

Masks:

• K5- 3rd - optional but not mandated

• 4th – 6th - required, except when outdoors, during P.E., recess, and lunch. (social
distancing IS mandated when masks are not worn)
• 7th – 12th - required, except when outdoors, during P.E. and Lunch (social distancing IS
mandated when masks are not worn)
• Each student required to wear a mask will receive two (2) washable facemasks.
• Face Shields and Desk Shields can be purchased and are optional. Additonal information
will be sent of how these can be purchased.
• All Teachers and staff are required to wear a mask or face shield.

Lunch/Meals/Snacks:

Cafeteria style lunch service and dining hall gatherings will be stalled for the first several
weeks of the start of School. During this time, students will be required to bring their lunches to
school and eat in their classrooms. If eating in the classroom is not feasible, the Anchor
Building along with the Cafeteria will be utilized for additonal space to facilitate social

3
distancing. Initially, this will keep like groupings together and avoid cross-over traffic. Once a
plan is in place to safely resume dining hall gatherings and school lunch service, we will do so
with staggered lunch times and safe distancing.

Guests on Property - Guests on property and buildings will be limited. Guests will be required
to have their temperature checked, wear a mask, and fill out a health form.

At-Home Protocol:

A Daily Health Check is required for all staff, families, children and their household members
PRIOR to coming to school each day and must include determining if you, your child or anyone
you or your child has been in contact with has been exposed to or tested positive for COVID,
showing any symptoms of COVID, or has a temperature of 100 or above. If any of these things
are present, please notify the school and keep the student home. Please be willing to err on
the side of caution. From home, your student will be able to access the distance learning
protocol until your child can safely return to school.

At School Drop Of/Check-in Protocol:

• All students, after having their temperature checked at home by a parent or guardian
will have their temperature checked again upon arriving at school by a staff member
• K5 -6th Staff members will greet the students at their car and ask the
parent/guardian/passengers a series of questions, prior to the student exiting the
vehicle. If the answer is no to all questions, the student will proceed to the door for a
temperature check by a staff member. Once the staff member confirms the student has
no temperature, the driver can depart and the student will proceed to the classroom. A
yes to any of the questions will require that a student stay out-of-school until a
determination that the symptoms are NON-Covid related by a doctor, or that any
exposure has been determined to be negative. Also, if determined to be positive, a 14-
day quarantine is mandated along with the proof a negative re-test before returning to
school.
• 7th-12th grade students will have their temperatures checked at the MSHS building
entrance and will be asked a series of questions. If the answer is no to all questions, the
student will proceed to the lobby for temperature check by a staff member. Once the
staff member confirms there is no temperature, the student can proceed to the
classroom. A yes to any of these questions will require that a student stay out of school
until a determination that the symptoms are NON-Covid related by a doctor, that any
exposure has been determined to be negative, or if determined to be positive, or
exposure is positive, a 14-day quarantine is mandated along with the proof of a negative
retest .
• Anyone with the following symptoms either at home, at check-in, or should they
develop them at school will be required to go home.

4
Fever of 100 degrees or higher
Chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New Loss of taste or smell
Sore Throat
Nausea or Vomiting
Diarrhea
*all symptoms above must be considered as possibly COVID related unless a
doctor’s note can verify that this an ongoing or NON RELATED COVID Symptom.
(i.e. asthma, severe allergies, etc)

Monitoring for Symptoms:

Overall health will be monitored throughout the school day. Anyone with the symptoms
described above will be required to go home and the household will be required to remain off
campus for 14 days unless medical clearance is provided by a doctor that indicates that the
present symptoms are associated with a NON-Covid-19 illness.

Sanitizing and Cleaning

• LCS will continue to include heightened daily cleaning and disinfecting in all buildings
focusing on high touch point areas such as drinking fountains (drinking fountains will be
used only to refill student’s personal water bottles), door handles, sinks and faucet
handles, and restrooms with EPA approved disinfectants against COVID-19. They will
also periodically do all-campus total surface EPA approved disinfecting spray
treatments.
• Staff will continue to clean and disinfect shared equipment including computer
equipment, keyboards, copiers, art supplies, recess or gym equipment, sports
equipment, desks, light switches, lockers if used, cubbies, and other learning materials
and high use areas, with EPA approved disinfectants against COVID-19 frequently and on
a regular basis.
• Surfaces that are not high touch such as bookcases, cabinets, wall boards, will be
cleaned following standard protocol.
• Hand washing/hygiene will be required upon arriving in the mornings, before entering a
classroom or other space, upon leaving the classroom or space and frequently
throughout the day. This includes outdoor playgrounds and natural play areas.
• Outdoor play equipment with high touch surfaces, such as railings, handles, etc. will be
cleaned and disinfected regularly

5
Sickness/Testing/Exposure/Response -

• If a student or staff member demonstrates any of the symptoms previously listed in this
document, the individual (and his/her household) is required to remain off campus until
medical clearance is provided by a doctor indicating that the present symptoms are
associated with a NON-COVID-19 illness.
• An individual with a fever of 100 or higher may indicate that the individual is vulnerable
and likely contagious. A period of 24 hours after the fever has come down and
stabilized without medication, and a negative COVID test result (or a doctor’s note that
verifies the symptom is NON-COVID related) is required before that individual can
return to school.
• If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID and has been present in school,
that individual is required to inform the school immediately, LCS will immediately
evaluate the extent of the exposure to others, notify the Health Department of the
diagnosis (names will NOT be given), and we will notify parents and staff. There will be a
24-hour closing of any potentially contaminated areas/buildings to allow for deep
cleaning and decontamination of that area/building.
• If a household member of a student or staff member tests positive for COVID, and the
student or staff member has been directly exposed to that individual, the student or
staff member must notify the school and is required to remain off campus until medical
clearance is provided by a doctor that indicates that the student or staff member has a
negative COVID test result. There will be a 24-hour closing of any potentially
contaminated areas/buildings to allow for deep cleaning and decontamination of that
area/building. Parents will be notified.
• The student that is out of school due to a positive COVID test result will be given
accommodations if he or she is too ill to maintain daily distance learning classroom
attendance. This will be provided until the student is cleared to return to normal on-
campus classroom instruction, and medical clearance is provided by a doctor indicating
a negative COVID test result.
• Any report of indirect exposure of a student or staff member with someone who tests
positive to COVID, does not constitute a removal or quarantine from school. LCS will
still appreciate that information and will continue to clean and disinfect all
areas/buildings.

LEVEL 2-Remote/Distance Learning Mandate - Schools Close and Fully Virtual - If state or local
government requires, or if circumstances necessitate the implementation of a distance
learning-only offering, LCS will be prepared in the following ways:

• Teachers are prepared to implement the fully virtual at home learning model
• Within 24 hours, parents and students will be given the remote platform information
• Class schedules will be very similar to a regular school day
• Teachers will primarily teach at school from their classrooms
• Accountability Contracts will be signed by parent and student

6
This document is intended to be updated and changed as new information,
circumstances, mandates and decisions evolve. It is intended to be a framework
to partner with state implementation guides and local city, district and
government policies.

NOTE: Within the next 7-10 days, each family will be sent a form that must be signed by a
parent or guardian acknowledging receipt and understanding of the Lighthouse Re-Entry Plan
along with an Assumption of Risk Waiver/Release for return to school.
