6. DESIGN OF LP GAS C
6.1 Design philosophy for Compressor Foundations
Compressor Foundation is designed as per following criteria.
1) Compressor foundation is block type foundation supported by bored cast-in situ piles.
2) Compressor foundations shall satisfy the requirements of IS: 2974 (Part 1):1984 and other parameter as per machine
vendor.
3) Dynamic analysis of block foundation is done as per Barkan’s method as recommended in “Handbook pf machine
foundation” by P. Srinivasulu and C.V Vaidyanathan. IS:2974 (Part 1):1984 Appendix B gives the design procedure for an
undamped system considering same theory.
4) Minimum thickness of pile cap shall be 600 mm as per Cl. 5.4.4 of IS: 2974 (Part 1)- 1984.
5) The centre of gravity of the system, that is, foundation and machine shall be located within 5 percent of the length of
foundation to concerned axis with respect to the centre of gravity of the pile group as per Cl. 5.4.4.2 of IS: 2974 (Part 1)-1
6) Pile-soil stiffness factors both in vertical and horizontal modes of vibration shall be determined as per Novak’s equatio
specified in book “Design of Structures and Foundations for Vibrating Machines” by Suresh Arya, Michael O’Neil & Georg
Pincus.
7) Dynamic parameters of soil are considered based on cross-holes test performed during geotechnical investigation.
8) Group pile effect is considered for calculating pile-soil stiffness factor as required in Cl. 5.4.4.3 b) of IS: 2974 (Part 1)-
9) After evaluating the pile-soil stiffness, the design shall be carried out in the same way as for the block foundation rest
directly on soil specified in Cl. 5.4.4.3 c) of IS: 2974 (Part 1)-1984.
10) Pile Capacity shall not exceed 80% of the allowable soil bearing capacity for static
loading.
