A Report On Case Study 1.2 Green Data Centres

The document discusses green data centers and their importance. It defines a green data center as a facility designed for maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact. Green data centers use advanced technologies for storage, management, and operations. The document then discusses the significance of green data centers, including minimizing footprint, using sustainable materials and landscaping, recycling waste, and using alternative energies. It provides an example of CtrlS Data Centre in Mumbai, which received the highest LEED certification for its energy saving features and green operations. CtrlS reduced its energy requirements for cooling, power, fans, and lights while allocating more to IT equipment.

Green Data Centres

What do you understand by Green Data Centres?
The green data center is a repository for the storage, management, and dissemination of
data in which the lighting, mechanical, computer, and electrical systems, are designed for
maximum efficiency of energy and minimum environmental impact. The construction
and operation of a green data center include advanced technologies and strategies.
Green data centers used advanced technologies for data storage, management, and
operations on the data.

Significance of Green Data Centres:

 Useful for hybrid or electric company vehicles.

 The footprints of the buildings are minimized using green technology.
 Used in low-emission building materials, carpets, and paints.
 Landscaping in a sustainable manner.
 Recycling of waste
 Installation of catalytic converters on backup generators.
 The use of alternative energy technologies such as photovoltaic, heat
pumps, and evaporative cooling.

Certification and construction of a green data center can be

expensive, but long-term cost savings can be obtained during
operations and maintenance. Another advantage of the green
facilities is that it offers employees a healthy, comfortable work
environment. Moreover, green facilities enhance relationships
among local communities.

There is an increasing pressure from environmentalists and the

public on the governments to offer green incentives such as
monetary support for the creation and maintenance of ecologically
responsible technologies.

The Importance of Green Data Centres in

Business
Energy is a basic component for data centers across the globe to deliver
effective services to customers in a business. However, on a large scale, the
power consumption of data centers comprises approximately 416 terawatts
or around three percent of all electricity generated on the planet. It is
irrefutable that the industry needs to take action and accelerate their search
for new ways to minimize carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency,
which is a challenge faced by many organizations.

Idea behind the designing:

Construction of large-scale data centers is currently dominating the sector,
which means a high proportion are currently under development, providing
an opportunity to lead with energy-efficient and effective design from the
beginning, and adopting the latest technologies in building and influencing
the overall supply chain for sustainable sourcing of materials for these
buildings.
Dedicated research teams can work alongside the designers to ensure that
measures are taken to improve efficiency before construction occurs. These
steps not only save time but fewer material resources are needed to tackle
the goal at the start of the project, rather than after the process.
By establishing proactive sustainability and efficiency measures at inception
and leveraging the latest technology, companies with data centers can ensure
that their facilities can be operated, maintained, repaired, and reconstructed
more sustainably, moving into a more circular use of materials and smarter,
cleaner way of consuming energy and water.

Case Study of CtrlS Data centre in Mumbai:

CtrlS Data centre in Mumbai has been awarded the highest rating of
Platinum under LEED v4 Existing Building (O+M) category and is
considered the first in the world to get this recognition from USGBC for its
state-of-the-art energy-saving features and environment-friendly operations.
CtrlS is one of the leading data center operators in Asia, which has the
distinction of having a 4-tier data infrastructure in the country. Its vision is
to bring sustainability into its operations to achieve a green rating for its
Mumbai facilities.
The data center specializes in improving sustainable performance, and has
overcome many challenges in one of the iconic projects such as the Mumbai
International Airport T2 Terminal.

Team Conserve started working along with the CtrlS operation team to first
ascertain the benchmark of the data centre's current performance in energy,
water, and other sustainability indices. The technical services team of CtrlS
conducted a series of audits to find and bridge any gaps between the
designed and actual performance in energy-consuming areas such as IT
equipment, chillers, lighting, HVAC systems, etc.
Efficiency in Energy:

On successful implementation of the audit findings, CtrlS achieved the

highest score of 100 in Energy Star Portfolio, which equates to 20 points in
LEED EB certification. Energy Star Portfolio is a measuring standard
developed by US EPA (Environment Protection Agency), which honors
projects based on their efficiency in energy over a period of time.
The Cooling System is one of the major guzzlers of energy in data centres,
accounting for almost 28% of the entire electricity consumption.

Views on CtrlS’s Green Data Centre:

CtrlS reduced energy requirement for Cooling (18%), Power chain (3%),
fans (3%), Lights (3%), and allocated more energy for IT equipment (70%).
This has enabled CtrlS data centres to scale and expand their data centre
performance without increasing their energy requirement.

The following energy pie chart shows the difference in the before and after
scenarios.
