    Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Tokugawa Shogunate in the early 17th century, unifying Japan under his rule. The Tokugawa system established lasting peace and stability through a strict feudal hierarchy. At the top were the shogun and daimyo lords, who ruled domains and were allowed to keep samurai armies. Peasants were at the bottom and closely monitored. The shogunate also implemented isolationist policies and imposed order through its bureaucracy.
