Introduction

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) processes in a dual circulating fluidized bed (DCFB) reactor are
investigated by means of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method. A two-fluid model with
consideration of heterogeneous chemical reactions is adopted. The kinetic theory of granular flow is
employed for closure. A cluster structure-dependent (CSD) drag coefficient model is applied to account
for the effect of mesoscale heterogeneous structure involving clusters or strands. The simulations are
performed to predict gas–solid flow behaviors and reactive characteristics in dual circulating fluidized
bed reactors during the CLC process.

Considering enough contact of fuel gas with oxygen carriers for the CLC process, both FR and AR are
generally designed as fluidized beds. The FR in form of bubbling fluidized beds makes fuel gas inside the
bubble phase unconverted, which leads to the reduction of fuel combustion efficiency. For the DCFB
reactor system, both FR and AR use a circulating fluidized bed as the reactor. The global circulation loop
is closed by the lower loop seal and the overall circulation rate is dominated by the AR. The layout of the
DCFB reactor system is displayed in Fig. 1. By this way, there is a good gas–solid contact in the FR due
to that the passing of the unconverted fuel gas inside the bubble is avoided, which has an enormous
potential for scale up [16,17]. Flow behaviors in the loop-seal of the DCFB reactor were investigated by
experiments and CFD simulations [18]. Kleitsch et al. [19] evaluated the performance of a 120-kW
chemical looping combustor by a simple plug flow model and discussed the effects of different operating
parameters on the fuel conversion.
