QURTUBA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Department of Civil Engineering

Online Mid Term Examination (Spring-2020)

Paper: Reinforced Concrete Design-I Course code: QCE-330
Total Marks: 25 Date: 15/06/2020
Semester: 6th

Q.1. [CLO-1]
Briefly explain the fundamental assumption for Reinforced Concrete Behavior. (05 marks)

Q.2. [CLO-2]
A rectangular beam section has the dimension i.e width b = 12 inch, height h = 30 inch and
effective depth d = 28 inch reinforced with three # 9 bars so that As = 3.0 in2. The concrete
cylinder strength fc`= 4000 psi and yield strength of Steel = 60,000 psi.
a) Analyze to calculate the nominal flexural capacity of the beam
b) Compare the Actual Reinforcement ratio of the section with maximum reinforcement ratio
and minimum reinforcement ratio. (05 marks)

Q.3. [CLO-3]
A simply supported beam has a span of 25 feet and support a service dead load of 800 lb/ft
and a uniform service live load of 1000 lb/ft. Design the beam section to resist the factored
external bending moment. The concrete compressive strength is 4000 psi and yield strength
of steel is 60,000 psi. (7.5 marks)

Q.4. [CLO-3]
Design a simply supported T beam to resist a factored positive moment equal to 6200 in-kip.
The beam is 14″ wide and is having 18″ effective depth including a slab thickness of 3 inches.
The centre to centre and clear length of the beam are 13.5′ and 12′ respectively. The clear
spacing between the adjacent beams is 4 ft. Material strengths are fc′ = 3 ksi and fy = 60 ksi.
(7.5 marks)
