Design of RC Structures Ass I
Institute of Technology
Target Group: 3rd Yr. CoTM Students Submission Date: June 5, 2023
Attempt all questions based on the instructions and try to do precisely and procedurally.
Neatness has its own value. Assume any missing data if necessary.
1. A simply supported reinforced concrete beam has longitudinal and cross-sectional dimensions
as shown in the figure below. Determine the value of the ultimate load (Pu) that can be applied
to the beam. Use concrete of C30/37 and Steel S-460. Neglect self-weight of the beam and
assume concrete cover of 25mm & diameter for stirrups 8mm. Use Parabolic-Rectangular
stress block.
2. Find the moment capacity of the RC beam cross section shown in the figure below by assuming
both Parabolic- Rectangular and simplified rectangular stress blocks. Compare the values
obtained by the two methods. What can you justify from the results? Use materials of C30/37
concrete and S-400 Steel.

3. An overhang RC beam is loaded as shown in the figure. For the cross section at section I-I,
shown below, determine the maximum cantilever span, Lc, for the beam. The material
properties are fy=400N/mm2 and fck=30N/mm2. Take width of beam 250mm.
4. Compute the effective depth of an RC section shown in the figure below if its capacity is 380
KNm. The Materials used are C20/25 concrete and S-400 steel. Assume simplified rectangular
stress block for the concrete in the compression zone.
5. Discuss the drawbacks of working stress and Ultimate load design methods.
6. There are several factors that affect the ultimate strength of an RC beam subjected to
bending. These factors can be summarized as:
a) Yield strength of reinforcement
b) Concrete compressive strength
c) Beam depth
d) Beam width &
e) Reinforcement ratio (Size & No. of rebar’s)
Compare the effect of the aforementioned parameters on the capacity of the beam. Which one
do you think would have a great impact on the bending capacity?
