Robotics Learning System

The document summarizes a robotics learning system called RLS that was developed over 2 years of research. RLS is an educational robotic platform that allows students to build and program their own robots to learn STEM concepts in a fun way. It consists of programmable robot units, sensors, construction materials, and programming software. RLS has two course modules for different grade levels that cover topics in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics over 30 hours of classroom and hands-on activities. The goal is to inspire students and nurture their creativity through robotics.

ROBOTICS LEARNING SYSTEM

“Using motivational effects of robotics to excite students about science and technology”

More than 2 years of exhaustive research, at our R&D center at SINE, IIT Bombay, with students,

academicians and industrial experts alike, has culminated into our latest offering, the Robotics

Learning System (RLS). RLS is new educational robotic learning platform that redefines classroom

robotics, making it possible for school students to build and program their own solutions in a fun

filled way. This course is aimed at inspiring and motivating young minds towards Science and

Technology learning.

We have developed not a program, but a way of practical pedagogy for developing the minds of

the future. RLS is implemented in the School by setting up a Robotics Lab. Hands-on projects,

team activities and competitions are used to provide a fun filled educational environment in the

Lab. By building and programming robots, students explore fundamental of science, technology,

engineering and mathematics (STEM).

RLS Highlights:
 Indigenous hardware and software from our R&D center in IIT Bombay

 Consists of classroom theory, hands on sessions and take home activities

 Interactive sessions with focus on sharing ideas, thoughts and nurturing creativity

 Scientific and organized approach, with worksheets and charts for experiments

 Creative and competitive atmosphere through module tests and competitions

The RLS includes:

       1. i-Pitara Pro which consists of programmable unit, multiple sensors, mechanical construction

blocks and necessary tools to build robots.

       2. CiMPLE an interactive software for robot programming. CiMPLE uses intuitive and visual

techniques to program a robot rather than using the conventional and complicated programming

languages.

      3. Robotics Education Program (REP) is a structured content that provides hands on, minds-on
learning experience for young students. The content emphasizes not just on how to use the kit to
build and program robots but on how to do it efficiently to provide a strong base for the future.

Course Structure:
 RLS has 2 modules: SCORE-Jr for 4th-6th std. and SCORE for 7th-12th std.

 Each module is a 30 hours contact program

 Each module is broken into 15 sessions of2 hours each (can be customized as per the

requirement of the school)

 These modules can be spread over 4-6 months depending on a schedule convenient to

school and students

Course Content:

The content provides a strong base for grasping multi-disciplinary concepts. Apart from Science &

math, it gives an exposure to Programming, Technology, Engineering, Construction and Design,

Students construct 12-14 different types of robots during the course.

SCORE Junior (Starter Course On Robotics Education Junior) - For Std. IV, V & VI
“A job well started is half done” – Keeping this philosophy in mind this module of REP focuses on
bringing the basic concepts of science, mechanics and programming to the students through
robotics. It introduces the student to the world of robotics, and gives him a head start in simple
robotics by learning to build simple structures, mechanisms, and basic level programming.
 Introduction to robotics - Why, What and How of Robotics

 Basics of building machines – How to get started?

 Commonly built structures – Making links, joints, chassis, mounts etc.

 Motion transfer using – gears, pulleys, lever etc.

 Simple Mechanisms – Turning/steering, dragging objects, lifting objects etc.

 Concepts of Physics I – factors affecting work to be done

 Introduction to Forces

 Types of forces

 Friction

 Electricity I – An introduction to the power behind driving the robots

 Voltage

 Current

 Polarity

 Basic Programming – An introduction to visual programming

SCORE (Starter Course On Robotics Education) - For Std. VII to XII

This module concentrates on lessons and activities covering topics within science, technology,

engineering and mathematics. Students analyze, investigate and build according to the problem at

hand. Emphasis is given on using good design practices while finding a solution. A higher level of

complexity in programming is also introduced, which extends the boundaries of creative thinking

and innovation.
 Good design practices – How to build better, more robust and fault tolerant mechanisms

 Motion transfer using - gears, pulleys, lever etc.

 Designing complex mechanism – pick & place object, robotic gripper etc.

 Electricity II – Apart from basic, more concepts on electricity such as

 Ohms Law

 Series and Parallel Circuits

 Concepts of Physics II

 Center of Gravity, Torque and Moment

 Electromagnetism
 Light & Sound

 Sensors – Introduction to sensors for robotics and using them to sense the environment

 Boolean logic – Concept of ANDing and ORing conditions.

 Logic building and Algorithm development

 Programming concepts and techniques – Programming different robot behaviours

 Multi behavioural robots

RoboLAB offerings:

In the process of setting up Robotics Lab, which will be part of the existing Computer Lab of

school, we will offer the following things:-

 i-Pitara Pro - nos. depend on school requirement

 Multi user licensed copy of CiMPLE

 Learning Content license for the School (Classroom presentations, lesson plans and

quizzes)
 Activity Material (for hands-on activities such as flex, props etc)

 One comprehensive Teacher's Training Program (Duration: 2 weeks)

 One follow-up Teacher's Training program
