ArcFlash Example14 PDF
The following figures illustrate how the technology has been designed, and how it can be effective at reducing the
short-circuit current (not modeled yet). This technology can be used to mitigate the arc flash incident energy and
this is the main purpose of this exercise.
Figures 1 & 2 show the FCL device and its operation. As mentioned before, this device will be modeled in ETAP
for its short-circuit reduction benefits, but in arc flash its fault clearing time reduction benefits can be modeled
with some conservative assumptions.
Setup
Load the project file named “AF-Example14”. Utilize the library from AF-Example14.lib (inside the
current project directory).
Select the following ETAP\Options (Preferences) before executing the exercise steps.
Procedure
Step1
In AF Mode, select study case AF, configuration Normal, revision Base, and name the output report
“WithoutSubtraction”.
1.1 What was the incident energy calculated for a fault at BusA, BusB and BusC?
___________________________________________________________________________________
1.2 What is the opening time determined for the FCL devices? Is this accurate? Is this fault clearing time
conservatively estimated?
____________________________________________________________________________________
Step2
Open the ETAP\Options (Preferences) before executing the following steps, set the value of the option called
“Subtraction of Incident Energy for Multiple Source Systems” from False to True.
2.1 Select study case AF, configuration Normal and revision Base. Select output report “WithSubtraction”.
What is the incident energy for a fault at BusA, BusB and BusC?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
2.2 What is the effect of the option “Subtraction of Incident Energy for Multiple Source Systems”? Why should
this option be enabled?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
2.3 What are the conservative assumptions being made to observe the arc flash incident energy mitigation effects
of the FCL devices?
