    Assignment 1

    Instructions

    Make a research, and then write a two - page reaction paper regarding the rising
    movement of Geocentricity in the modern world. Be sure to be as objective as possible,
    and cite the references used in the reaction paper.

    GEOCENTRICITY

    From the word “geo” meaning earth, and “centric” meaning center, the geocentric
    model is earth-centered, wherein the earth lies in the middle of the solar system not the
    sun.

    Under the geocentric model, the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets all orbited Earth.
    The geocentric model was the predominant description of the cosmos in many ancient
    civilizations, such as those of Aristotle in Classical Greece and Ptolemy in Roman
    Egypt. Ptolemy is the one who discovered this theory. The most highly developed
    geocentric model was that of Ptolemy of Alexandria (2nd century ce). It was generally
    accepted until the 16th century, after which it was superseded by heliocentric models
    such as that of Nicolaus Copernicus.
    The geocentricity was believed by astronomers in medieval period and
    dominated in ancient and medieval science. A lot of people seemed to find enough
    evidence to prove their point. The things outside the earth appeared reasonable to
    assume that Earth was stationary, for nothing seemed to make it move. The Sun,
    Moon, planets, and stars could be seen moving about Earth along circular paths day
    after day. Furthermore, the fact that objects fall toward Earth provided what was
    perceived as support for the geocentric theory.

    The scientist have concluded that this theory is true because of the certain
    observations that are conducted in the night sky. From the perspective of the stars
    moving, it is very easy to assume that the earth is at the center of the universe. Wherein
    the stars and the moon moves around and if we are going to observe it, it’s real.

    Although there are a lot of claims before that this theory is true, it is still wrong. In
    modern science, the heliocentric model is more acceptable. The sun is the center of the
    solar system and everything revolves around it. It was proven by a lot of scientist like
    Galileo Galilei. Numerous researches are done to strengthen their proof regarding their
    claim.

    The two theories made us think about the creation of the universe. Plenty of time
    and effort were given by the scientists who created these theories. Although it is not
    very clear to the mind of the people, we should still respect their own claims because an
    alteration might happen in the future and a life-changing information might be our
    subject in our own research.
