Machine Drawing - Rivets

The document discusses the design parameters, types, and uses of rivets. It outlines that the pitch between rivets should allow for head forming and the back pitch between rows should be 2.5-3 times the rivet diameter. Riveted joints are mainly lap joints or butt joints. The types of rivet heads include snap, counter-sunk, conical, and pan heads which are suited for different applications. Caulking and fullering are used to seal the riveted joint. Rivet material should be tough, ductile steel or copper alloys.

Applications
Design Parameters
• Pitch (p): This is the distance between
two centres of the consecutive rivets in
a single row.
• The pitch should be such that head
forming operation is not hindered. The
practice dictates that
p>3d
so that head forming is permitted

• Back Pitch (pt or pb ): This is the

shortest distance between two
successive rows in a multiple riveted
joint.
pb = 2.5d to 3.0 d

Caulking and Fullering

Caulking: Operation of burring

down the edges of the plates
and heads of the rivets to form
a metal to metal joint
Fullering is a better option
What should be essential qualities of a rivet and
its material?
Good rivet material - tough and ductile.
Materials - Steel (low carbon), coppers, brass

Indian standard IS: 2998-1982 the material must have

– tensile strength of 40 MPa
– Elongation > 20 %.
What are the uses of snap headed, counter shank headed,
conical headed and pan headed rivets?

• Snap heads are used mainly for structural work and

machine riveting.
• Counter shank heads are employed for ship building
where flush surfaces are necessary.
• Conical heads are used where riveting is done by
hand hammering.
• Pan heads are required where very high strength is
needed since they have the maximum strength, but
they are very difficult to shape.
