INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the exciting course of Heat Transfer!
It is a 3 credit hour course.
One of the most interesting and also, real life engineering problem
oriented courses.
One of the key courses under the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
Prior knowledge in Differential Calculus, Thermodynamics, and Fluid
Mechanics is required.
COURSE CONTENTS
The entire course has three major parts. They are: Conduction,
Convection, and Radiation.
Based on the theories learnt, Heat exchangers chapter will deal with
real-world engineering devices, calculations, and practices.
Conduction topics:
Introduction, steady and unsteady state conduction in one dimension,
cases of single and composite walls, cylinders and spheres, fins of
uniform cross section; Transient heat transfer: system with negligible
internal resistance; Hiesler charts; Introduction to two and three
dimensional heat conduction.
COURSE CONTENTS
Convection Topics:
Basic mechanism, forced and natural, methods of evaluation, non-
dimensional parameters, empirical and semi-empirical methods.
Radiation Topics :
Fundamental laws, black and gray bodies, form factors, evaluation of form
factors.
Heat exchangers Topics :
Parallel flow and counter flow. LMTD relationship; Heat transfer cases in
ship design: insulation in bulkheads, refrigerated spaces, fish holds in
trawlers.

COURSE PLAN
After completing each chapter, relevant example/worked out problems
will be provided from various reference/ textbooks.
In some cases, information and source of the example/ mathematical
problems will be provided.
Students are encouraged to solve/look at as many textbooks as they
can for developing problem solving skill.
Class tests, Performances, Assignments, and Term papers will focus
on mathematical problems as well as basic theorems.
