The Los Pinos zipline
The children of Los Pinos, Colombia, don’t go to school by bus, and don’t
take the train. There are only two ways to leave the village – they can walk
for two hours or take a one minute zipline ride! Eight children use the zipline
every day to go to school and return home. It’s four hundred metres long,
and people can travel across it at 62 kilometres per hour. It looks like fun,
but the river is 360 metres below them when they cross – so it’s scary, too!

Building team spirit
Spirit of Adventure Trust
The Spirit of Adventure Trust started in New Zealand. It allows young people
to work on a ship and learn about sailing, the sea - and themselves! There
is an exciting programme of activities on the ship, on the water and on land.
Forty young people spend ten days on the sailing ship, Spirit of New Zealand,
developing their skills as leaders. On the last day of the voyage, the young
people sail the ship themselves, without the help of the adults on board.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award started in the UK. Now young
people from all over the world can join it if they are between the ages of 14
and 24. To achieve the Award, young people volunteer within their community,
practise a skill, play a sport and plan and go on an adventurous journey with
friends. There are three different levels for the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Junior Forest Wardens, Canada
The Junior Forest Wardens’ programme in Canada teaches children to enjoy the
outdoor life. They camp, backpack, canoe, go mountaineering, plant trees and
more! To prepare for activities like these, they learn about first aid and survival.
Older members teach them to identify trees, plants and animal life. They also
learn about the weather! They go on an outdoor trip every month. Geoff, a
young warden, told us, ‘We were eating our dinner one evening when a young
bear walked into the camp. That was scary!’
Singapore Red Cross Youth
Many young people in Singapore are in the Red Cross Youth organisation. They
learn first aid but also do many different activities that teach them to live and
work together. They also work for their community and make contact with other
Red Cross Youth organisations around the world. As one member said, ‘One
day I was walking along the street when I saw an accident. I didn’t know what
to do! That’s when I decided to join the Red Cross Youth. Now I love it!’

Spectacular landscapes
LONGJI RICE TERRACES, CHINA
This landscape is man-made. The sides of the mountain have rice fields full of
water. People built these fields about five hundred years ago. The fields near the
top are 880 metres high. It is a beautiful place to visit. If the sun shines in the
spring, the fields produce young green rice plants for the summer and golden rice
in autumn.
WAVE ROCK, AUSTRALIA
Wave Rock in Western Australia looks like a wall
of water ready to crash onto the beach. In fact, it
is a wall of rock 14m high and 110m long. The rain
washes the rock creating grey, red and yellow
stripes. If you go there, you will see the rock
change colour at different times during the day.
Wave Rock is a very important place for Australia’s
Aborigine people.

The Tsingy de Bemaraha
National Park is a UNESCO The ocean current on the coast of Namibia in Africa causes thick
