1 Read the text then answer the questions.
Hello, my name’s Karin and I go to

Walton Secondary School for Girls. I started Art Club
last week. It was great fun! The teacher showed
us how to make candles!
First, we looked at some beauiful candles from

the course last year – all different shapes and wax
colours – then he described how to make a basic
candle. We decided which kind of mould to use:
some were long and thin but mine was square.
Then we poured some oil inside so that it was easy
to take the candle out.
Ater that, we heated some wax unil it was
completely liquid. Then we added some colour – I used red because it’s
my favourite colour – and a scent – I wanted orange but the teacher
didn’t have that, so I used apple.

We put a piece of short string called a ‘wick’ in the mould, then poured
the wax in. Then we waited for the wax to cool and go hard.
My candle wasn’t perfect. There were some holes and the
colour was brown not red, but I was pleased with it! I decided
to give it to my mother as a present!

Unusual ways to get to school
The Los Pinos zipline
The children of Los Pinos, Colombia, don’t go to school by bus, and don’t
take the train. There are only two ways to leave the village – they can walk
for two hours or take a one minute zipline ride! Eight children use the zipline
every day to go to school and return home. It’s four hundred metres long,
and people can travel across it at 62 kilometres per hour. It looks like fun,
but the river is 360 metres below them when they cross – so it’s scary, too!

The Beast of Ballyhoura
The Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race is an endurance various activities like kayaking, hill running, navigation,

can reach 54 degrees centigrade during the race and 93 degrees
centigrade on the road. When it’s that hot, athletes have to run on
the white lines on the road or their shoes melt! Badwater champion,
Arthur Webb, finished his tenth race in 2009. He was 67 years old!
Iron Man World Championships

There are Iron Man contests all over the world, Hawaii, Great Britain etc. The Iron
Man contest is a triathlon (three races) – a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bike ride
and a 42.2 km marathon run. The competitors complete do all the races without a

Spirit of Adventure Trust
The Spirit of Adventure Trust started in New Zealand. It allows young people
to work on a ship and learn about sailing, the sea - and themselves! There
is an exciting programme of activities on the ship, on the water and on land.
Forty young people spend ten days on the sailing ship, Spirit of New Zealand,
developing their skills as leaders. On the last day of the voyage, the young
people sail the ship themselves, without the help of the adults on board.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award started in the UK. Now young
people from all over the world can join it if they are between the ages of 14
and 24. To achieve the Award, young people volunteer within their community,
practise a skill, play a sport and plan and go on an adventurous journey with
friends. There are three different levels for the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Junior Forest Wardens, Canada
The Junior Forest Wardens’ programme in Canada teaches children to enjoy the
outdoor life. They camp, backpack, canoe, go mountaineering, plant trees and
more! To prepare for activities like these, they learn about first aid and survival.
Older members teach them to identify trees, plants and animal life. They also
learn about the weather! They go on an outdoor trip every month. Geoff, a
young warden, told us, ‘We were eating our dinner one evening when a young
bear walked into the camp. That was scary!’
Singapore Red Cross Youth
Many young people in Singapore are in the Red Cross Youth organisation. They
learn first aid but also do many different activities that teach them to live and
work together. They also work for their community and make contact with other
Red Cross Youth organisations around the world. As one member said, ‘One
day I was walking along the street when I saw an accident. I didn’t know what
to do! That’s when I decided to join the Red Cross Youth. Now I love it!’

Spectacular landscapes
LONGJI RICE TERRACES, CHINA
This landscape is man-made. The sides of the mountain have rice fields full of
water. People built these fields about five hundred years ago. The fields near the
top are 880 metres high. It is a beautiful place to visit. If the sun shines in the
spring, the fields produce young green rice plants for the summer and golden rice
in autumn.
WAVE ROCK, AUSTRALIA
Wave Rock in Western Australia looks like a wall
of water ready to crash onto the beach. In fact, it
is a wall of rock 14m high and 110m long. The rain
washes the rock creating grey, red and yellow
stripes. If you go there, you will see the rock
change colour at different times during the day.
Wave Rock is a very important place for Australia’s
Aborigine people.
