The Biome Map Questions and Instructions

The document discusses biomes and the factors that determine their distribution patterns. It notes that temperature and precipitation are the two main abiotic factors that define a biome. It also states that the continent with the most biomes is North and South America because the Tropic of Cancer, Capricorn, and Equator pass through the Americas, exposing it to more climate variations. Additionally, it explains that tundra would have snow each year but an average annual temperature above freezing, and that Africa has the largest savanna biome.

1. What two abiotic factors determine the characteristics of a biome?

Temperature and Precipitation

2. By looking at your map, what patterns in distribution and locations of the biomes do you
see?
we can see that the patterns are distributed in specific zones, for example in the equator
line the only biomes found in this area are savanna and rainforest
In the same way we can see that in the line of the tropic of Capricorn there are certain
biomes such as the desert, a part of savanna, Grassland and another small part of
Temperate Deciduous Forest.
Also, we can see that approximately from latitude 50 upwards there is a pattern of biomes
because we only find two of them, such as Tundra and Taiga.

3. Which continent has the most biomes present? Why do you think this continent has
more biomes than the other continents?

America, because the tropic of Capricorn, tropic of cancer and the equator passes through
America, so this makes the continent have a great variety of biomes and temperatures.

4. Which biome would have snow each year, but still have an average annual temperature
above freezing?

Tundra

5. Which continent has the largest savanna?

Africa

6. Why is precipitation a limiting factor to a biome?

Because it determines the growth of a population in an area, precipitation can set the type
of growing season. Each product of condensation that falls to the ground will dictate when
species can grow, and which species can grow. it keeps a species in balance and gives
special characteristics to the biome and it determines growing season and soil quality.

7. Explain the effect of UV in the distribution of a biome.

UV is necessary for plants to grow, and to provide energy to warm the earth's atmosphere.
UV intensity controls plant growth. Also, Light duration affects plant flowering and animal
and insect habits.
