Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototyping allows companies to test early versions of products and get feedback to improve designs before significant resources are spent, potentially saving millions. It involves quickly creating prototypes through techniques like rapid ideation with collaborators to discover the best ideas and have fallback options if needed. Low-fidelity prototypes can be thrown out easily if flaws are found, and testing concepts with users early through rapid prototyping is safer than taking a high-fidelity design straight to production without feedback. Prototyping is an iterative process where each round incorporates lessons learned to refine the solution.

Rapid Prototyping

Prototypes are the earlier versions of a final model considerably smaller in size relative to actual model.

The prototype gives idea about how the actual product going to be and many properties and features at
the earlier stage of manufacturing so it can help us improving the final model. It is widely used in many
industries especially in design departments to get the idea of their product and to take feedback from
that design. Prototypes are very useful in reducing the costs or losses to the companies. By prototyping
the companies can save millions of dollars.

For human-centered designers, prototyping is an incredibly effective way to make ideas tangible, to
learn through making, and to quickly get key feedback from the people we are designing for. Rapid
testing with real users can help us identify concepts that have potential for impact and spot ways to
improve on early ideas. Prototyping isn’t about being precious. Simple, scrappy prototypes will not only
save time, but also help focus testing on just the critical elements. The steps outlined below could take
anything from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the challenge we are solving.

I personally felt, while watching the Objectified movie, that prototypes are the base of any foundation.
Rapid Prototyping is very much necessary to move fast in this competitive world. Hence, Rapid
Prototyping was introduced. Rapid Prototyping is used to iterate these things at faster pace and hence
we get results soon. It helps designers quickly discover and validate their best ideas.

Rapid ideation with multiple collaborators means there’s a better chance of discovering the winning
idea. It also means that we’ll end up with a wide range of fallback ideas in case our original prototype is
a flop idea.

A focus on low-fidelity prototyping means that if we take a wrong turn, we’re comfortable throwing the
idea in the trash and starting over.

When time is money, testing concepts with real users early and often is our best bet. It’s much safer
than taking the fast track straight to high fidelity only to realize its numerous flaws could have been
avoided—if only we had discovered them earlier via rapid prototyping.

Prototyping is an iterative process and so we may repeat this sequence several times over. Each time we
Integrate feedback and Iterate upon our solution, to improve and refine it. And with each new round of
testing we are learning goals will become more tightly focused, as we make decisions about what to take
forward.
