Maths Mania # 058

DIRECTIONS: For the following questions, four options are given. Choose the correct option.

1. The equations ax + b = 0 and cx + d = 0 are consistent, if

(1) ad = bc
(2) ad + bc = 0
(3) ab – cd = 0
(4) ab + cd = 0

2. The total cost of 6 books and 4 pencils is Rs. 34 and that of 5 books and 5 pencils is Rs. 30. The cost of
each book and pencil (in Rs.) respectively is
(1) 1 and 5
(2) 5 and 1
(3) 6 and 1
(4) 1 and 6

3. The sum of two numbers is 80. If the larger number exceeds four times the smaller one by 5, then the
smaller number is
(1) 5
(2) 15
(3) 20
(4) 25

4. The difference between two numbers is 5 and the difference between their squares is 65. The larger
number is
(1) 9
(2) 10
(3) 11
(4) 12

5. A number consists of two digits, whose sum is 10. If 18 is subtracted from the number, digits are
reversed. The number is
(1) 64
(2) 46
(3) 55
(4) 73

6. A number consists of two digits whose sum is 9. The number obtained by reversing the order of the
digits of the given number, exceeds the given number of 27. The number is
(1) 36
(2) 45
(3) 54
(4) 27

7. The monthly incomes of A and B are in the ratio 4 : 3. Each of them saves Rs.600 If the ratio of their
expenditures is 3 : 2, then the monthly income of A is
(1) Rs. 2400
(2) Rs. 1800
(3) Rs. 2000
(4) Rs. 3600
8. Rs.49 were divided among 150 children. Each girl got 50 paise and a boy 25 paise. How many boys
were there?
(1) 100
(2) 102
(3) 104
(4) 105

9. A man purchased 47 stamps of 20 paise and 15 paise. The total amount he spent was Rs.8.80. The
number of 20 paise and 15 paise stamps which he purchased.
(1) is 12 and 35 respectively
(2) is 10 and 37 respectively
(3) is 35 and 12 respectively
(4) can’t be determined from the given data

10. A purse contains only 25 paise and 10 paise coins. The total amount in the purse is Rs.8.25. If the
number of 25 paise coins is one-third of the number of 10 paise coins in the purse, then the total
number of coins in the purse is
(1) 30
(2) 40
(3) 45
(4) 60
Detailed Solutions

a b
1. These equations are consistent if = i.e. ad = bc. Ans.(1)
c d
2. Let C.P. of a book = Rs. x and C.P. of a pencil Rs. y.
Then, 6x + 4y = 34 and 5x + 5y = 30.
Solving these equations, we get x = 5 and y = 1. Ans.(2)
3. Let the numbers be x and y.
Then, x + y = 80 and x – 4y = 5.
Solving these we get : y = 15. Ans.(2)
4. Let the numbers be x and y.
Then x – y = 5 and x 2 – y 2 = 65.

x2 − y2 65
∴ = ⇔ x + y = 13. Ans.(1)
x−y 5
5. Let ten’s digit = x and unit digit = y.
Then x + y = 10 and 10x + y – 18 = 10y + x
∴ x + y = 10 and x – y = 2. So, x = 6 and y = 4.
So, the number is 64. Ans.(1)
6. Let ten’s digit = x and unit digit = y. Then,
∴ x + y = 9 and (10y + x) – (10x + y) = 27
∴ x + y = 9 and – x + y= 3. So, x = 3 and y = 6.
So, the number is 36. Ans.(1)
7. Let their income be 4x, 3x and expenditures be 3y, 2y.
Then, 4x – 3y = 600 and 3x – 2y = 600.
Solving these equations, we get : x = 600 and y = 600.
∴ Income of A = 4x = Rs. 2400. Ans.(1)
8. Let number of boys be x and number of girls by y.

25 50
Then, x + y = 150, x+ y = 49.
100 100
Solving x + y = 150, x + 2y = 196, we get x = 104. Ans.(3)
9. Let the number of 20-paise stamps be x and 15-paise stamps be y.

20 15
Then, x + y = 47, x+ y = 8.80.
100 100
Solving x + y = 47 and 4x + 3y = 176, we get : x = 35 and y = 12. Ans.(3)
10. Let the number of 25-paise coins be x and that of 10-paise coins be y.

25 10 1
Then, x+ y = 8.25 and x = y..
100 100 3
Solving 5x + 2y = 165 and y = 3x we get x = 15 and y = 45.
Total number of coins in the purse = (x + y) = 60. Ans.(4)
