Proposed Traffic Management System For Liwasang Jose N. Lico Park Roundabout

This undergraduate thesis proposes a traffic management system for the Liwasang Jose N. Lico Park roundabout in Antipolo City, Rizal, Philippines. It analyzes the existing performance of the roundabout in terms of control delay and level of service. A 15-hour traffic survey was conducted to determine peak hour volumes. Based on calculations, the roundabout is currently operating at an unacceptable level of service during peak hours. The researchers propose two traffic management systems - converting normal tricycles to electric tricycles, and converting tricycle volumes to jeepney volumes - to minimize congestion and improve the roundabout's performance.

ABSTRACT

A roundabout is a type of circular-shaped intersection which traffic travels

counter-clockwise (in the Philippines and other right-hand traffic countries). As the

number of vehicles increases the roads are being used more often which may

result in traffic congestion due to the huge amount of volume passing on the road.

Roundabouts were designed to have a smooth traffic flow and to avoid

accidents because the vehicles slow down when approaching a roundabout

intersection.

In this study, the researchers focused to determine the peak hour from

morning to evening and analyze the performance of Liwasang Jose N. Lico Park

Roundabout in terms of control delay and level of service.

Using a drone and multi counter application, the researchers determined

the volume of vehicles needed for the computation and analysis so as to improve

the performance of the roundabout. The researchers proposed a traffic

management system based on calculations that can be used to minimize traffic

congestion.
