Maxim of Quality

The Maxim of Quality requires that information shared in conversations be truthful and supported by evidence. It is one of four conversational maxims proposed by H.P. Grice to explain regularities in how authentic information is exchanged. The Maxim requires one to not say what they believe is false or what they lack evidence for. Violating the Maxim, like deliberately lying, is called "flouting" and must be motivated. Inferences drawn from flouting are called "implicatures," which do not have to be literally true.

When engaged in conversation, the Maxim
of Quality requires that you
1. Do not say what you believe to be false.
2. Do not say that for which you lack
adequate evidence.

Basic Idea
• The Maxim of Quality requires information
provided in conversations to be genuine
and justified.
• It is one of the four conversational maxims
of the Cooperative Principle.
• Grice proposes this maxim as an
explanation for a certain kind of regularity
in conversational behavior with respect to
the authenticity of information provided at
each turn of a conversation.

One finds this normal.


Why?

Because the
Jim does not contribute what he believes Maxim is observed
to be false and to be unsubstantiated.
–e.g. “It’s in Hong Kong.”
