Numerical Assignment-1
Note: Take the suitable assumptions wherever required

1. A drive has the following parameters: T= 150 – 0.1 N (N-m) where N is the speed in rpm. Load
torque Tl = 100 N-m. Initially, the drive is operating in steady speed. The characteristics of load torque is
changed to Tl = - 100 N-m. Calculate the initial and final equilibrium speeds. (Ans: 500 rpm, 2500 rpm)

2. Calculate the starting time of a drive with the following parameters: J = 10Kg-m2; Te =
15+0.5m and Tl = 5+0.6m. (Ans: 299.57 sec)

3. A horizontal conveyor belt moving at a uniform speed of 0.2 m/sec transports material at the rate
of 100 tonnes / hr. The belt is 200 m long and driven by a motor at 1200 rpm. (a) Determine the load
inertia referred to the motor shaft. (b) Calculate the torque that the motor should develop to accelerate
the motor from standstill to full speed in 8 sec. The M.I of the motor is 0.1 Kg-m2. (Ans: 0.422 Kg-m2,
8.2 N-m)

4. Obtain the equilibrium points of the following system and determine their steady state stability:
Te = -1- 2m and Tl = -3m. (Ans: m = 1 , Te= -3 (stable); m = 0.25 , Te= -1.5 (unstable))

5. A drive consisting of semiconductor converter fed DC motor, runs according to the following
duty cycle:
(i) Acceleration from standstill to 1500 rpm in 10 sec at uniform acceleration.
(ii) Running at 1500 rpm and 800 N-m torque for 8 sec.
(iii) Braking from 1500 rpm to standstill in 10 sec at uniform deceleration.
(iv) Remains idle for 20 sec.
Determine the torque and power ratings of the machine. Assume forced cooling and constant field
current. J = 100Kg-m2. . (Ans: 750.73 N-m, 78.616 kW).

6. The 10-minute rating of a motor is 200 watts. The heating time constant is 40 minutes. The
maximum efficiency occurs at Full Load (continuous). Determine the continuous rating. (Ans: 70.53 N-
m)

7. A motor has a continuous rating of 100kW. The heating and cooling time constants are 50 and 70
minutes respectively. The motor has maximum efficiency at 80% FL and is employed in an intermittent
periodic load cycle consisting of a load period of 10 minutes followed by a no-load period of 10
minutes. Calculate the value of load in kW.(during load period). (Ans: 140.93 kW)

8. A DC separately excited motor is running at 800 rpm driving a load whose torque is constant.
Motor armature current is 500 Amps. The drop in Ra and rotational losses are negligible. Magnetic
circuit is linear. Calculate the motor speed and Ia, if terminal voltage is reduced to 50% and If is reduced
to 80%. (Ans: 500 rpm, 625 amps)

9. A 230V, 960 rpm, 200A separately excited DC motor has Ra=0.02 ohm. It is driving an
overhauling load whose torque is at the rated motor torque value. Field flux can be changed and field
saturates at 1.2 times of rated flux. Calculate the speed range in which motor can hold the load by
regenerative braking without exceeding twice the rated current of the motor.

10. A 220V, 200A, 750 rpm separately excited DC motor has Ra=0.05 ohm. It is driving a load with
T=500-0.25N Nm where N is the speed in rpm. Speeds below rated speed are obtained by controlling Va
with rated field excitation and speeds above rated speed are obtained by field weakening at rated Va.
Calculate
(i) Va and Ia when speed is 400 rpm.
(ii) The value of flux as a percent of rated flux at 1500 rpm. (119.48V, 149.6A and 51.3%)
11. A 220V, 20 kW DC shunt motor running at its rated speed of 1200 rpm is to be braked by
plugging. Ra=0.1 ohm and rated efficiency is 88% Calculate (i) R to be connected in series with the
armature such that braking current is less than or equal to twice full load current.(ii)Initial braking
torque. (iii)The torque when motor speed falls to 400 rpm. (1.98 Ω, 318.3 Nm, 214.72 Nm)

12. A 220 V, 1500 rpm, 11.6 A, separately excited motor has the armature resistance and inductance
of 2 ohms and 28.36 mH respectively. This motor is controlled by a single-phase fully controlled
rectifier with an AC source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. calculate developed torques for the following
conditions of operation assuming continuous conduction:
(i)  = 15 and speed = 1480 rpm.
(ii)  = 30 and speed = 1000 rpm.
(iii)  = 120 and speed = -1178 rpm.
(iv)  = 120 and speed = -640 rpm.
13. The motor of problem 12 is now controlled by a single-phase half-controlled rectifier. The AC
source voltage is 230 V, 50 Hz. Calculate developed torques for the following conditions of operation
assuming continuous conduction:
(i)  = 60, and speed = 1050 rpm.
(ii)  = 60, and speed = 891 rpm.
14. A 230 V, 650 rpm, 100 A, separately excited DC motor has the armature resistance and
inductance of 0.08 ohm and 8 mH respectively. Motor is controlled by a 3-ph full converter with source
voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz. Calculate speeds for the following points:
(i)  = 45 and torque = 1000 N-m.
(ii)  = 135and torque = 1000 N-m.
15. A three phase dual converter is used to control the speed of a100 hp, 600 V, 1800 rpm
separately excited DC motor. The dual converter is operated from a three phase 480 V, 60 Hz supply.
Ra =.1 Ώ, La=5mH, back emf constant = 0.3V/rpm, Ia =130 A ( rated current). a) For motoring
operation at α = 60 deg, assuming rated Ia , determine the speed of the motor, power input from the
supply, the waveforms of supply voltage ( Van, Vbn, V cn), converter output voltage, motor current
and one of the phase currents in the ac side. b) repeat the problem for α = 120 deg for regenerative
braking.
