THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the beginning of this presentation the student will introduced in the world of Facebook,

Facebook is one of the huge social media and one of the famous site, Facebook is an account

which can help everyone to connect with different people from anywhere in world , include

the ICT students. It will improve their knowledge about other places customs and cultures. In

Facebook, students be able to chat with foreigner in other countries therefore, students can

learn about how to speak English. Facebook also gives the student the opportunity to

communicate with their friends very easily, Facebook help us to see updates has a lot of

advantage. Some people are using the Facebook to post something in social media specially

nudes things and other people who intended to chat us just to try to scam and some crime

are happening in Facebook like cyber bullying. At some point facebook helps us to

communicate to our love ones who are far away from us, they can talk through chat they

can see their love ones through video chat even they far away from your place.

Facebook is a huge part social media thing who a lot of users sometimes it is helpful for us

but sometimes it is danger as of now lot of facebook user are teenagers,students and it’s

alarming because they can’t focus on their study especially the students because half of their

mind are on facebook and it is also alarming because through facebook or any social media

site are ways of strangers to communicate to people and scam them especially the students

because they know how to convince the students .

- Facebook is a social networking service launched on February 4, 2004. It was founded

by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University student.

Eduardo Severin “the Facebook” as it was originally known the name take in take in

form the sheets of paper distributed to freshmen. But Zuckerberg needed help to grow

his little social networking site. The facebook has been installed to all University in

America in May 2004.

- Since he invented Facebook Mark Zuckerberg became famous he received lots of

popularity. Now facebook is a huge social media that uses the most especially of the

new generation, it is useful by communicating to each other and to know if your friend

or love ones are available. Example in our country facebook very common social media

but most popular to use. It has disadvantages because now a day lots of people, are

posting some nudes things in social media especially facebook because it has a lot of

users and some strangers who intented to chat us just to try to scam and some crime

are happening in Facebook like cyber bullying, dishonor other people,facebook also can

bring bad effects for students first,it regards to students education,students are more

often subjective to reading facebook update than reading books.So that the student

will have study distraction; students will be ignoring their valuable time to do their

homework and to study before the exams,In addition students are spending too much

time in scanning or scrolling down on their timeline than to review their lessons and

when the students browsing to the internet to search for their assignment they prefer

to chat with their friends about nonsense things.

This study focuses on the advantages and disadvantagesof using a facebook in

academic performance of an Grade 12 ICT students I SHS student here in Bestlink

College of the Philippines.

Significance of the study

Everyone from around the world is on Facebook now including me. There are many reasons

why Facebook became so important to everyone. According to Facebook data, more than

one million people are using Facebook everyday from all over the world for some people

who like to play Facebook for fun

The following are the involved in using Facebook:

STUDENTS - Facebook is often used by students day by day as it helps to be active with new

knowledge and news.

TEACHERS - Teachers usually use Facebook to communicate with learners and parents to

update them on new activities and if their children have problems in school.

PARENTS - Specially mother’s use social media for social supports , parenting advice and to

keep with friends and family, including their children and also to communicate each other

Scope and Delimitation

This study is limited only to the 20 selected student and professor of grade 12 ICT in BCP,

they might know what are those big impact of using facebook or how can it affect their

academic performance and also the advantages and disadvantages of facebook in their daily

life as student,

Definition of terms

If you are conducting a research you must put or define the important words or terminology

for the purpose of knowing the meaning of the word.

Advantage- A condition or Circumstance that put one in a favorable or superior position

Disadvantage- An unfavorable circumstance or condition that reduces the change of success

or effects.

Timeline-It’s your profile page it contains all your photos,post and videos list ofyour friends

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATUREAND STUDIES

This chapter is to provide theoretical background for the study about advantage and

disadvantage of using facebook in academic performance in SHS student in BCP.

The study and literature review will help solve the problem about using facebook and

to proposed the study to contribution have and academic context.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves and begin or keep

connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students

indifferent levels, facebook has already people they already know offline or to find

new friends. Facebook permits its users to present themselves in an internet profile

build up “friends” who can post comments on each other’s walls, and view each other

page. Facebook associates can also join groups based on common interest, see

what things they have in common, learn each others’ hobbies, interest, favorite music

and romantic relationship status through their pages. But what are behind these

facts? What does facebook bring to the lives of them members especially to the

students? How does facebook affect the life of a student? According to studies,

facebook has an impact to students. Some students are using it for educational

purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with classmates. It is

said that using facebook boosts students self-esteem even more

LOCAL STUDY

In May 2011 consumer report survey, there are 7.5 million children under 13 with

accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site’s terms of service . facebook is

beneficial to one’s social life because they can continuously stayin contact with their

friends and relatives, while other say that it can cause increased antisocial

tendencies because peoplee are not directly communicating with each other. But

some argue that Facebook has affected the social life and activity of people invarious

ways. With its availability on many mobile devices, Facebook allows users to

continuously stay in touch with friends relative and other acquaintances wherever

they are in the world, as long as there is access to the internet. It can also unite

people with common interest and/ or belief through groups and other pages, and has

been known to reunite lost family members and friends because of wide spread

reach of its networks

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Nowadays, social networking is growing rapidly. The most “giant” in the virtual world

today is facebook. Users can update from second to second to seek daily and

business information. In Indonesia most people already have this account, either

from the artist, officials, teenagers. And even students as young as ten years old had

already their personal account. Facebook has become very important part of our life.

It helps use in many ways and also harming us in other ways in this occasion, there

are some advantage and disadvantages of using facebook, especially for students.

Let me mention them! What is the good thing about facebook? It gives students

additional knowledge. To begin facebook is an account which can help everyone to

connect with different people from anywhere in the world, include the students. It will

improve their knowledge about othere places, customs and cultures. For example

English students can improve their English by using chatting application that is

provided in facebook. In facebook, students be able to chat with foreigner in other

countries. Therefore, studentst can learn about how to speak English well. In

addition, facebook also gives the students the opportunity to communicate with their

friends very easily, students can use facebook for group study by creating a group

only for studying students can share any informations and learn about homework,

assignments, exams, etc in that group. On the other hand, facebook also can bring

bad effects for students, firsts, it regards to students education, students are more

often subjected to reading facebook update than reading books . It is disclosed

frank(2009:32) states that facebook users most likely always want to know about

update status,so that every day without they realize it takes times.They are

stimulated to write unimportant things. Students will have study distraction;students

will be ignoring their valuable time to do homework and to study before the exams.

The disadvantages of facebook fake profiles and ids fake profile is one of main

disadvantage of facebook. Many people use fake profile for cheat, harass someone

they don’t like. Facebook is addicting the biggest disadvantages of facebook is its

addiction which causes many problems by killing your precious time.use of facebook

for your need is fine but if once you get addicted it consume your most valuable time.

Facebook privacy: if you don’t use facebook privacy proper way it causes affect on

your personal information which you provide to facebook. Alse due to lack of

understanding people make mistakes with privacy. Now days people have many

tricks to view private facebook profiles, so keep your facebook privacy settings very

strong. Not using facebook list features: by using this service you can update status

to specific targeted friend.and the advantages of using facebook from the begging of

facebook, facebook provides free service to users and this is main advantage of

facebook because free is power now days facebook start some paid services but

they don’t compulsory on users they give freedom to users to choice services.

Facebook for networking facebook helps you connect and share with the people in

your life. You can connect and find your old school friends also you can connect with

your relatives. Also facebook have billions users so you can make new friends on

facebook from different areas of world. You can connect with people by using

facebook chat, messages, poke, group etc. by using facebook as network you can

improve your relationship and you can do date with interested people. So any one

take advantage of facebook to maintain relationship. Facebook for business:

facebook have billions active user so it is best platform for any kind of business. You

can sell, promote services or products for business purpose. You can improve your

business brand value by using facebook in social networking world. So you can take

advantage of facebook to earn money online for business purpose you can make

facebook fan page of your brand or company. Facebook video chat and facebook as

image and video hosting: you can do facebook video chat with your friends, relatives

by using facebook as video chat tool, facebook have in built video chat app

partnership with skype. Also you can take advantage of facebook as image and video

hosting site. You can make your own albums of your images or collection of your

videos and you can share it as public or keep it privately by using facebook privacy.

Facebook security: facebook provides very highly security about users account and

provide very secure service with very high class privacy policies facebook always try

to keep privacy setting as simple as possible so users can secure their account

easily. Also facebook keep strict watch on spammer, you can block spammer or hide

post of spammer or you can report them to facebook.

SYNTHESIS

The above reviewed literature and several aspects of research the collection of

literature and studies is one of the techniques of the researchers in this research

study. The facebook analysis found out that they are so many students and people

are using facebook and some critic said that faceboook is one of the problem why

some students are not in their class.

This study aimed to find out the perception of facebook users and on how to maintain

of it along to studentsof Bestlink College Of The Philippines Grade 12 ICT SHS

Chapter 3

Research Methodology

In this chapter explains the methodology used in gathering data,the researches

explain the qualitative methodology more information will be given on how the

questioner, survey and observation were in used in collecting data.

Research Design

The study about used descriptive method design for advantages and disadvantages

of using facebook. in academic performance in senior high school in bestlink college

of phillipines, the main purpose of this research is to assess the impact of facebook

usage on student’s academic performance.

Respondents of the study

The respondents of the study was 20 students and 10 professors,this will be taken up

from the students and professors in Grade 12 ICT in bestlink college of the philppines

Instrumental of the study

The instruments for this research was prepared by the researchers based on the

respondents profile, advantage and disadvantage of using facebook in academic

performance, difficulties that may encountered using of facebook, positive and

negative effects of using facebook. At the same time, in order to get more accurate

data, the researcher used questionnaire, conducted survey and observation among

the respondents.This study is specifically design to analyze the advantage and

disadvantage using facebook in academic performance of SHS student of ICT.

Questionnaires

the self-formulated questionnaires was the most important instrument used in the

study. It is the major tool used by the researchers in gathering significant data from

the respondents. It has four (5) parts; Part one (1) is on the respondents profile. Part

two (2) the advantages using in facebook in academic performance in SHS student in

BCP. Part three (3) Disadvantages using in facebook in academic performance in

SHS student in BCP. Part four (4) Difficulties that may encountered cause of using

facebook. Part five (5) possible solution to lessen the negative effect of using

facebook.

Validation and Retrieval of Instruments

The finish final draft was pre-tested or reinterview to some students of ICT grade 11

and 12 who will not part of the sampled respondents .The purpose of this is to find

out if there is difficulties in the questioner that were hard to understand.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The responses made by the students and professor describing their demographic

profile,after collecting the data needed the researches arrange and analyze the

gathered data with help of statistical tools.The following are the statistical tools used

in this study together with their corresponding formula

1. Ranking – It is another descriptive measure which describes the positional


importance of one item when compared with one another.

2. Percentage-used to find out the frequencies of the students response using

the formula:

The data gathered were tallied; computations and presentations of data were

facilitated through the use of tables of percentage distribution. The weighted mean

values of the area of inquiry were likewise computed.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Every data collected should be analyzed and interpreted to inform the


researcher about the findings. Data analysis was done manually based
on the information from the questionnaires.

overall population of 20 with 7 or 35% of female at rank 2 followed by male with 13 or

65%. It concludes that majority of the respondents are male.

Table 2 .manifested the profile of the respondents as to age with the given age
bracket from sixteen (16) years old and thirty-one (31) and above. Ages of 16-18

years old got rank 1 at 19 or 95% followed by ages of 22-24,25-27,28-30, years old

and 31 and above at 0 or 0%, ages of 19-21 years old at 1 or 5%. This concludes

that majority of the respondents are on the age bracket of 16-18 years old.

1.1. Gender. The overall population of 20 with 13 or 65% of male at rank 1

followed by female with 7 or 35%. It concludes that majority of the

respondents are male.

1.2. Age. Ages of 16-18 years old got rank 1 at 19 or 95% followed by ages

of 19-21 years old rank 2 at 1 5%, ages of 22-24 years old and 25-27

years old at 0 or 0%, ages of 28-30 years old and 31nyears old above at

0 or 0%

1.3. Socio Economimc Status. Majority of the respondents are in middle

class which got the rank 1 at 18 or 40% followed by Upper and lower

class which both got rank 2 or 10%

followed by female with 2 or 20%. It concludes that majority of the
