AWS A1.1:2016 An American National Standard ES ES Metric Practice Guide for the Welding Industry
AWS At.1-2016 ‘Statement on the Use of American Welding Society Standards All standards (codes, specifications, recommended practices, methods, classifications, and guides) of the American ‘Welding Society (AWS) are voluntary consensus standards that have been developed in accordance with the rules of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). When AWS American National Standards are either incorporated in, oF ‘made past of, documents that are included in federal or siate laws and regulations, or the regulations of other goverumen- tal bodies, their provisions carry the full legal authority of the statute. In such cases. any changes in those AWS standards ‘must be approved by the governmental body having statutory jurisdiction before they can become a part of those laws ‘and regulations. In all cases, these standards carry the fll legal authority of the contractor other document that invokes the AWS standards. Where this contractual relationship exists, changes in or deviations fiom requirements of an AWS standard must be by agreement berween the contracting partes AWS American National Standasds are developed throuzh a consensus standards development process that brings together volunteers representing varied viewpoints and interests to achieve consensus. While AWS administers the proc- ss and establishes rules to promote faimess in the development of consensus, it does not independenty tet, evaluate, or ‘verify the accuracy of any information or the soundness of any judaments contained in its standards AWS disclaims liability for any injury to persons or to property, or other damages of any nature whatsoever, whether ‘special, indirect, consequential, or compensatory, directly or indizectly resulting from the publication, use of, cf reliance ‘on this standard. Anyone using these documents should rely on his or her own independent judzment or. as appropriate, seek the advice of a competent professional in determining the exercise of reasonable care in any given circumstances. It is assumed that the use of this standard and its provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and competent personnel ‘This standard may be superseded by new editions. This standard may also be corrected through publication of amend- ‘meats or errata, or supplemented by publication of addenda. Information on the latest editions of AWS standards inciud- ing amendments, errata, and addenda is posted on the AWS web page (www aws.org). Users should ensure that they have the latest edition, amendments, errata, and addenda. Publication of this standard does not authorize inftingement of any patent or trade name. The US. industrial and commercial productivity, mathematics and science education, and the competitiveness of our products and services in world markets would be enhanced by the adoption of the metric system_ Americans have, so far, only made ineffective attempts at public education and awareness of the metic system. It is of historical interest that inthe late 1700s Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson stronaly supported decimal ‘measurement and decimal currency: They were successful in having the US use a decimal currency burt not the decimal measurement system they also promoted. In fac, in 1790 George Washington in his first annual message to Congress teminded the legislators “Uniformity in the currency, weights, and measures of the United States is an object of great smportance, and will, lam persuaded, be duly attended to.” The metric system of measurement was part of the reforms ‘Napoleon enacted and it was spread to all the lands under his coatrol. This coherent method of measurement served to fuel the scientific progress ofthe coming decades. The USA, in fact, had a major influence on the measurement leaders in France, who were developing the decimal metric system to become the legal French measuring system. It should be noted that, by acts of Congress the metric system has been legal for use in all commercial and legal dealings in the since 1866 and it was declared to be the “preferred system of measurement” in 1988. Simple conversation isnot the answer The use of two different unit systems was the cause of the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter: NASA specified metric unt forts design and construction but one subcontractor provided thruster performance data in pound force seconds instead of newion seconds. The spacecraft was intended to orbit Mars at 150 kilometers altitude, but incorrect data caused itto descend instead to about 57 kilometers buming the orbiter up in the Martian atmos- phere: In addition to being a source of erors, simple mathematical conversion creates consistencies in allowable toler- ‘ances, It also causes extra cost when rounding causes tighter tolerances than specified inthe original design Even the countries that were using metric measurement had to make compromises and changes to have a truly uniform system, which we now refer to as ST (aternational Standard.) A receat example was the value of ateaspooa, which was ‘afferent in several countries. When dispensing medicine an accurate Value is critical. There 1s now a unified SI value for ‘hismeasure. The AWS Metic Practice Committee has tried to remain congruent with these unification changes, as have ‘other Societies such as IEEE and ASME, ‘The American Welding Society has made significant progress in including SI units in our standards documents and in our published Welding Journal. This has helped make them accepted World Wide. This 6* edition reflects the current “state of the art” in SI practice for the U.S. welding industry and wll acest the welding industry im converting to ST unite and promote their voluntary use ‘Comments and suggestions for the improvement ofthis standard are welcome. They should be seut to the Secretary, AWS Committee on Metsic Practice, American Welding Society, $669 NW 36 St, # 130, Miami, FL 33166.Table of Contents Porsomnel Foreword List of Tables: = reotn = i hs Beepenesomavs Sea sts 2 The International System of Units (ST)... 21 Completeness, 22. The user of this standard should establish 2a appropriate safery program to address such risks 2s well as to meet applicable regulatory requirements. ANSI Z49.1 should be considered whea developing the safety program. 2, The International System of Units (ST) Asystem of units is any collection of related units. SI isthe only system that has the properties outlined in 2.1 through 2.3 2.1 Completeness. Completeness requires that a unit of measurement be defined for every quantity of interest in the physical sciences and technologies Published by the American Welding Society, 8669 NW 36 Stet, Miami, FL 33166; Telephone 800.143.0353; (website: www a. orf)AWS At 4:2016 2.2 Coherence. Coherence requires that all derived units in the system be obtained from the base units by the rules of ‘multiplication and division with no rumerical factor other than the rmmber one (1) ever occurring in the expressions for derived units in terms of the base units, The system of units must also be coherent with its corresponding system of quantities and equations. system of units is coherent with respect to a system of quantities and equations ifthe system of units is chosen in such 2 way that the equations berween numerical values have exactiy the same form (including numerical factors) as the corresponding equations between quaatities (Quantity Denied Unt Unit Equation Force (mass times acceleration) Fama Energy (force times distance) joule aie1 ee. Power (rate of energy transfer) watt IW=ide Pails ‘Beessare (foes dived by asta) paca paFla 2.3 Uniqueness, Uniqueness requires that there be one, and only one, unit defined for each quantity. For example, the SI ‘units for force (newton), energy (joule), and power (watt) are the same, respectively, whether the process is mechanical, electrical, or thermal. 2.4 Advantages of the SI. The International System of Units (SI i the metric system of units in its latest form. STis the ‘only system of units which fully satisfies all the above three requirements for completeness, coherence, and uniqueness, ‘Within SI, a set of base-ten prefixes is defined to form decimal multiples and submuliples of SI units. SI Units and their bbase-ten multiples and submultiples are in harmony with our decimal system of arithmetic, facilitating easy numerical calculations. Awkward manipalations of common fractions such as 1/16, 1/32, and 1 64 are completely unnecessary. All industrial nations, including the United States by the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988 (Public Law 100- 418), have chosen the SI as the preferred system of units for all applications in science, engineering, technology, commerce, and trade 3. SI Units and Symbols ‘ST consists of seven base units, derived units, and a set of prefixes for the formation of multiples of the various units. 3.1 SI Base Units. Names of SI base quantities, names of comresponding STbase units, their symbols, and definitions are given in Table 1 3.2 SL Derived Units. SI derived units are formed as described in 2.2. Some of them have been given special names and symbols. Examples are listed in Table 2 3.3 Prefixes. SI prefixes may be used to indicate multiples of SI units, thas simplifying numeric terms and providing a convenient substitute for writing powers of ten as generally preferred in computation. For example. 16 $00 meters or 16.8 « 10? meters becomes 168 kilometers. See Table 3 for the list of prefixes and 6.1 for examples of their use. ‘The kilogram is the only SI base or derived unit whose name, for historical reasons, contains a prefix. In this case, the appropriate prefix is atached to grara. 4. Other Units Used with SI “There ae certain units, although not part of SI, which are in widespread use and are acceptable for use with SL. The selection of these terms was based cca.use of (1) STunits where practicable, (2) numbers of reasonable size, and (3) accepted units currently in use. Filler metal and fillet sizes are tabulated in Tables 6 and 7. SIvalues are approximate equivalents for conversion on draw- ‘ngs, specifications, and so forth. These values are for conversion only and are not intended for new designs where a more rational series for sizing, such as shown in the Rational Series column of Table 7, may be used. 6. Style and Usage 6.1 Application and Usage of Prefixes 6.1.1 Prefixes may be used with SI units to indicate multiples. Prefixes provide convenient substitutes for using powers of ten and they eliminate nonsignificant digits. Prefecred Accepiable 123 km 12300 m, 123 10° m 6.1.2 Prefixes in steps of 1000 are recommended. It is generally desirable to avoid the prefixes hecto, deka, deci, and conti in technical wniting forthe welding industry, with the exception of the widely weed centimeter cm). Preferred ‘Noapieiened am, mk then, dam, dem 6.1.3 It is generally desirable that the prefix chosen place the numerical value between 0.1 and 1000, For special situations, such as tabular presentations, however, this recommendation may be inappropriate. 6.1.4 Multiple and hypheaated prefixes shall not be used. One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram of mass atthe rate of one meter per second squared. In common and everyday use, and especially m commen parlance, the term weight is uswally used as a synonym for mass As a measure of mass, weight should be restricted to commercial usage.
