5 INFORMATION FOR HEAT TREATMENT SPEC

a. Post Heating

• Post-Heating shall be carried out specified WPS by using electrical

resistance heating.
• Basic required minimum temperature shall be determined according to
Table 5.2.

b. PWHT heating and cooling requirements

1) Heating rate from ambient temperature of the weld joints to 315 oC is

unrestricted.
2) Recommended setting of heating and cooling rate during actual heat
treatment at site is as follows.
• Heating rate from 315C to soak temperature shall not exceed 220 ºC
Heating rate: 220 C x 25.4/T,

PROCEDURE Rev. 00
Date: 18/05/2020

For WPS is 25mm thickness we will choose the heating rate is 180 ºC/h
• Cooling Rate from soak temperature to 315°C shall not exceed 220 ºC.
Cooling rate: 220 C x 25.4/T
For WPS is 25mm thickness we will choose the cooling rate is 180 ºC/h
c. Soaking temperature and soaking time

• Basic required minimum temperature shall be determined according to

Table 5.2.
• For WPS is 25mm thickness and Carbon Steel(A572 Gr50 và Q345B,
SS400) heating for it to soak temperature(625°C) then holding time in 1hour
and plus 15 minutes.

• P.W.H.T CYCLE ( CARBON STEEL )

6 HEATING METHOD

• The welding process requires PWHT to be wrapped on both sides by

the heating pad and insulation
• The heat treatment area must ensure fire safety
7 TEMPERATURE CONTROL

• A minimum of one control thermocouple shall be used for each heating

circuit, the control of the Heating, Soaking and Cooling are achieved by the
use of control instrumentation such as Auto Programmer/ Temperature
Controller (Semi-Auto) or Bi-metallic Energy Regulators (Manual) working

in conjunction with the switch gears to turn on or off the power to the heating
elements
• To assist in control, each thermocouple is connected via the
compensating cable to its respective recording and controlling point.
8 TEMPERATURE RECORDING

• The thermocouples shall be nickel chromium/nickel aluminum (type K).

Thermocouples are certified by the supplier and their certificate of
conformity shall be submitted to the Client’s site representative.
• The thermocouple wires should be flash discharged directly to the pipe
by mean of thermocouple attachment unit (TAU)
• Thermocouples used are the consumable type 0.711mm dia. Glass
Fiber varnish finish thermocouple. Thermocouples shall be welded directly
onto the surface of the work piece 50mm away on each side of the
centerline of the weld by means of Capacitor discharge action (Electric
Resistance Sparking Process) with the aid of a Thermocouple Attachment
Unit. Thus, the surface of the welds becomes the Thermocouple Hot
Junction. This will ensure that the true temperature of the work piece are
being measured and monitored. Weld penetration of the thermocouple
wires will only be 0.2mm to 0.3mm. Precautions shall be taken so as not to
create defects such as undercuts etc., and the welded thermocouples shall
be removed and the surface of the components shall be smoothly finished
by filing or grinding after pre-heating and after heat treatment
• Additional the temperature recording shall be check and calibrated
every 6 months internally to confirm the accuracy of equipment.
• Thermocouples shall be attached on the work piece.
• Compensating cable between the thermocouples Cold Junction and
the temperature recorders/controllers shall be connected to the nickel
chromium conductor (non magnetic) and the constantan lead (-ve) to the
nickel aluminum conductor (magnetic).
• The thermocouples indicated in paragraph 9.1 shall be connecting to
the continuously monitoring temperature recorders, thus providing a total
record of temperature variations and trends during the whole of the
pre-heating cycle. Each recorder shall be of the range 0-1200 C and set at a
chart speed of 25 or 50 mm per hour.
• The temperature recorders used shall be calibrated on six monthly

bases, as Recommended by Manufacturer and the Calibration Certificates

shall be submitted to the Client’s site representative.
9 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

 POWER FAILURE
• In the event of a complete power failure, the equipment will
automatically fail safe
• Upon occurrence of a power failure, the following procedure should be
adopted:
• Switch on switches and circuit breakers without turning on power to
heaters.
• Check temperature on recorder.
• Check temperature spread is still within specification. If so, turn on
power to heaters and maintain temperature uniformity, then continue with
heat treatment.
• If temperature are out of specification, first increase heat to heaters
until all thermocouples are within specification – maintain temperature
uniformity and then continue with heat treatment.
• During PWHT, joints which are easily accessible to personnel handing
or touch shall be hang with “Hot Dangerous Area” signboard.
• “Danger – High Voltage” signboard shall be permanently hang on the
generator.
• Red/White tape shall be used to barricade treatment machinery.
 ABNORMAL WEATHER CONDITIONS
• If extreme weather is envisaged, I.e. heavy rain or gale wind which are
likely to interfere with the heat treatment, then the start of the heat treatment
should be postponed.
• If during the course of the heat treatment, unpredicted abnormal
weather occurs, the heat treatment may continue at the discretion of the
Site Supervisor provided that this does not constitute a danger to personnel
and that the heat treatment remains within specification.
• If in the opinion of the Supervisor, conditions constitute a danger to
personnel and or danger to the component, then the heat treatment will be
put into hold condition and in extreme cases, after consultation, the
temperature cases, the heat treatment shall be stopped immediately.
