prevent harmful thermal gradients of the spool.
2) Thermocouples and recording equipment to be used shall be calibrated once
a year.
3) Thermocouples and recording equipment have to be registered with
accordance in monitoring and measuring procedure (TA023A1-QA-00-003-
F-001). Calibration certificates (Certified copy) shall be available with
calibrated PWHT equipment for verification as required.
7 Heat treatment performance
1) PWHT shall be performed in accordance with the ASME code.
2) PWHT in an enclosed furnace is the preferred method for equipment and
piping spools
3) PWHT for welds required in WPS is performed with electric coil
resistance.
4) Heating and cooling rates and variation in temperature shall comply with
ASME Section VIII, Div.1 code requirements.
5) The WPS shall state whether PWHT is required and indicate the
temperature range(s) and holding times(s).

6) All machined surfaces shall be protected to avoid thermal affect during

PWHT.
7) For pipe or tube spools subject to PWHT in an enclosed furnace, a
minimum of one thermocouple shall be attached to each individual spool.
8) Electric resistance elements shall be used for pipe and tube welds subject to
local PWHT. Thermocouples shall be located on the outside surface as
follows, with a minimum of one control thermocouple used for each heating
circuit:
NPS - .
NPS - one thermocouple at
.
NPS - four thermocouples equally spaced around
circumference
9) For local or partial PWHT, the minimum width of the heating band shall be
a minimum of 6t or 150mm either side of the weld, whichever is greater, or
the code requirement if this results in a greater heating band width.
Insulation shall extend a minimum of 250mm beyond the edge of the
heating band or the code requirements if this results in a greater insulation
width. For flange welds, the entire flange surface, inside and out, shall be
insulated. Wherever practical, the inside surface over the area of the heating
band shall be insulated, or if this is not practical, the ends shall be sealed to
prevent draughts and minimize convection currents
8 Operation procedure
1) Heat treatment shall be done before the hydrostatic test and after any
welded repairs.
2) RT to confirm welding accepted before and after PWHT and hardness test
shall be verified after PWHT.
3) Before and after PWHT, welding joint shall be visually inspected to comply
with approved WPS and code based weld parameters.
4) The items and materials shall be restricted or supported by support angle to
prevent distortion during heat treatment, if necessary.
5) Thermocouples shall be contact directly the surface of the parts to be heat
treated and covered with steel block or insulation to maintain heat during
PWHT.
6) Heating flame shall not impinge on the work piece directly if using furnace.
7) Heating
The heating method shall provide the required metal temperature, metal
temperature uniformity, and temperature control, and may include an
enclosed furnace, electric resistance. Above 315°C (600°F), the rate of

heating and cooling shall not exceed 335°C/h (600°F/hr) divided by one-
half the maximum material thickness in inches at the weld, but in no case
shall the rate exceed 335°C/h (600°F/hr)
For items constructed according to ASME Section VIII Div 1:
Above 425oC, the rate of heating shall be not more than 222oC/hr
divided by the maximum metal thickness of the shell or head plate in
inches, but in no case more than 222 oC/hr, but need not be slower than
56oC/hr
8) Holding
The holding temperature and time shall be specified on the Heat Treatment
Work Instruction (TA23A1-QA-00-021-F-001).
9) Cooling for stress relieving or heat treatment
For items constructed according to ASME Section VIII Div 1:
Above 425oC, cooling shall be done in a closed furnace or under the
insulated condition at a rate not greater than 280 oC/hr divided by the
maximum metal thickness in inches (1 in = 25.4 mm), but in no case more
than 280oC/hr, but need not be slower than 56 oC/hr.
9 Temporary attachment for heat
1) Temporary welds shall be removed, and the metal surface shall be restored
to smooth contour and examined by liquid penetrant or magnetic particle

2) For attaching of bare wire thermocouples by capacitor discharge welding, a
Welding Procedure Specification is prepared, describing the capacitor
discharge equipment, the combination of materials to be joined, and the
technique of application; qualification of the welding procedure is not
required. (The energy of the welding process is limited to 125 W-sec). The
attaching point shall be inspected by PT method.
10 Preheat

A variety of devices are available for measuring and monitoring

temperatures. The component or piece being welded should be preheated to
allow the heat to soak into the material. Where possible, this should be
monitored and validated. Monitoring the surface temperature a
predetermined distance away from the weld edge is normally adequate for
most applications. It is never acceptable to make or take readings that would
result in contamination of the weld groove
a) Temperature Indicating Crayons. These crayons or pencil-like devices
are designed to melt at specific temperatures
b) Electrical/Electronic Temperature Monitoring. For preheat and welding
operations, instantaneous devices such as contact pyrometers or direct-
reading thermocouples with analog or digital readout can be used. All
devices shall be calibrated or have some means of verifying their ability
to measure the desired temperature range
11 Records
Temperature-Time Chart shall be provided to Shop/Field Site QC Engineer for
review then he prepares the Heat Treatment Record (TA23A1-QA-00-021-F-
002).
All QC file for PWHT shall be scanned and loaded on ROSER.
All QC file for PWHT shall be handed over to NDT in hard copy and soft copy
