Spiritual Warfare - Part 1: (Part of The God The Warrior Series)
Spiritual Warfare - Part 1: (Part of The God The Warrior Series)
So we live between two great actions of God the Warrior. What He did on the Cross,
defeating the enemy and breaking his power; and what He will still do when He
comes and finally and completely defeats the enemy.
We are in this ‘in between’ setting - we appreciate what has been done and we
anticipate what will be done.
Hebrews 6:4 & 5 gives us an amazing view of the Christian life. These verses
describe the believer as tasting or experiencing the wonderful Gifts of God, part of
which is ‘the powers of the age that is coming’
This last blessing means that we can know and enjoy today, something (not fully or
completely) of the power and the reality of the future Kingdom of God. For example: -
Great meetings and the manifest presence of God; healing and healings; the infilling
of the Spirit; victories over the enemy in spiritual warfare … are all ways in which we
can taste the powers of the age that is coming.
While we wait and anticipate the coming of the Lord, we are given both the calling
and the privilege to engage in Spiritual warfare and to see many moments when the
power, the reality of the future manifests in our present. “May your Kingdom come!”
The basic notion of Spiritual Warfare is that we are in a state of battle and struggle …
we are at war.
For the most part these battles are personal and familial (i.e. immediate to us);
however there are also battles that can be fought that are relevant to our community
and to our nation.
There are those who teach that every area or region has ‘spiritual strongmen’,
demonic powers that seek to hinder and prevent the work of God from achieving
breakthrough and growth. These need to be defeated and bound.
Certainly when we read Daniel we see that while he was praying angelic battles were
taking place, and the answers to his prayers were being hindered. (Daniel 10:13)
2. Rules of Engagement
Every army and almost every battle is fought with certain ‘rules of engagement’ in
place. These are the guiding principles, the rules by which the battles are fought.
A. The Believer’s Authority is ONLY in Christ
Jesus the Warrior God won the battle through His Death and Resurrection. He is the
One with the Keys and with all authority.
He has commissioned us - ‘as the Father sent me, so I send you’, part of this
commission is that are given authority in His name. (John 20:21)
Acts records the story of a man who tried to cast out demons outside of Christ. (Acts
19:15) We have no authority in ourselves. We have not won the victory at Calvary.
All that we do is in the name of and in the authority of Christ (David …1 Sam 17:45),
it is this that makes this next point so critical ...
The Christian life is not about us. Christian Ministry is not about us. There is a
fundamental principle in all Christian living and ministry … I must decrease and He
must increase. (John 3:30) I must embrace the cross and die daily, hourly, all the
time.
The theme, the motif of my life must be ‘I surrender all’, I yield my life to you Lord …
here am, I come to you, use me. We need to live in the atmosphere and the reality of
an Isaiah 6 moment … God’s glory; our need, and being cleansed and commissioned
for service.
The authority of Christ will flow in prayer and in ministry, when there is less of me and
more of Him. When my self has been submitted and surrendered totally to Him.
There is a part of us that hates this message - the Old man, the Self. However it is a
fundamental principle ‘what you feed – grows’.
If you walk in the flesh, you will live in the power and the consequences of the flesh; if
you walk in the Spirit you will live in the power and the grace of the Spirit. (Romans
8:4 – 8)
We have to make conscious and consistent choices to put off the old and put on the
New (Col 3:5 – 10) We have to embrace the new life of the Spirit … it is the basis by
which we can effectively do ‘Spiritual Warfare’.
“Not by might nor by Power, but by my Spirit” says the Lord of Hosts
(Zech 4:6)
