Take a Stand
Vivienne Harr wants to make the world a better place for all kids. She sells lemonade to help
children around the world.
1 When Vivienne Harr was 8 years old, she saw a photo she says she will never forget. It was
an image of two young boys carrying large, heavy rocks on their backs. These children were
the same age as Vivienne. But they did not have the same freedom and opportunities.
2 In some parts of the world, children are forced to work long hard days. They earn little or
no pay. Many are treated as slaves. They do not go to school. Vivienne wanted to change
this. "I want all kids to be able to play," Vivienne, now 10, told TFK. "I want them to be
happy."
3 A Sweet Solution To help raise money for children like the two boys in the photo, Vivienne
started a lemonade stand near her home in Marin County, California. She promised to work
every day for a year, rain or shine. "Sometimes, it was hard for me, when the weather was
bad or I wasn't feeling well," Vivienne says. "But I knew that other kids were having a
harder time than I was at that very moment."
4 Vivienne aimed to earn $100,000 in 365 days. On day 175, she passed her goal. But that
didn't stop Vivienne from working. With her family, she started Make a Stand, Inc. The
company now bottles Vivienne's lemonade and sells it in 130 stores around the country. A
small percentage of sales goes to support Vivienne's dream of making the world a better
place for all children.

Life at Age 11
A new documentary, I Am Eleven, features interviews with 11-year-old kids around the world
Australian filmmaker Genevieve Bailey wanted to see the world through the eyes of 11-year-olds.
So over the course of six years, she traveled to 15 countries where she talked to kids about their
lives. The result is a new documentary, I Am Eleven, which features 11-year-olds from around the
world sharing their thoughts on family, school, friendship, war and their hopes for the future.
The film is already in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles TFK (Time for Kids magazine)
spoke to Ms Bailey to find out more about the filming process.
TFK:
GENEVIEVE BAILEY:
I actually felt really on top of the world when I was 11. For me, 11 was that point where you don’t
feel like a little kid anymore but you don’t feel like a teenager. I’m glad I chose that age.
TFK:
Can you talk about the process of how you found the 11 year olds to interview?
GENEVIEVE BAILEY:
I hit the streets and asked people if they knew anyone who was 11. It was a really interesting way
to see each city as well.
TFK:
How were the kids to interview? Were they shy, or eager to talk to you?
GENEVIEVE BAILEY:
6
I had three rules: the child had to be 11, they had to want to be part of the project, and their
family had to give permission. The kids in the film, even though some of them were more shy
than others, accepted to be part of the film. I’m really happy that, now that the film is finished,
quite a few of the kids have seen the film and they are very proud of it.
