Q 1 (Mark 2) Label where each of the following electrical quantities would be found in
both the "Y" and "Delta" three-phase configurations:

Phase voltage = Vø
Line voltage = VL
Phase current = Iø
Line current = IL

Iø = IL IL

Vø= VL
VL
VL
√3
= Vø Iø= √I L3

In which circuit (Y or Delta) are the phase and line currents equal? In which circuit (Y or
Delta) are the phase and line voltages equal? Explain both answers, in terms that
anyone with a basic knowledge of electricity could understand. Where phase and line
quantities are unequal, determine which is larger.

Answer:
@ Y Configuration

Iø = IL

VL > Vø

@ DELTA Configuration

VL = Vø
Iø < IL
Q 2 (Mark 3) Explain the difference between a balanced polyphase system and an unbalanced
polyphase system. What conditions typically cause a polyphase system to become unbalanced?

Answer:
Balanced load in 3 phase system is a condition where all three phases (lines) carry same magnitude of
current, with evenly spaced phase difference. If the load is Y connected, with neutral as return path, this
neutral will carry no current.

Unbalanced load makes the lines / phases to carry different current magnitudes, and sum total of these
at neutral point is not zero. Load in each phase is different, carrying its own current. Neutral in this case
carries the net unbalanced current .

Q 3 (Marks 1) In a balanced Y-connected power system, calculate the phase voltage

(Ephase) if the line voltage (Eline) is 480 volts.

VL
Vø = √3 Vø = 277v.

Answer:
Ephase = _______ Vø = 277v ________

Q 4 (Marks 4) What is the phase sequence of each of the following sets of voltages?

a)
v a = 208 cos  ωt + 27° V
vb = 208 cos  ωt + 147° V
v C = 208 cos  ωt - 93° V

b) v a=4160 cos ( ω t−18° ) V

vb = 4160cos  ωt - 138° V
v C = 4160cos  ωt +102° V

Solution:

a) θa – θb = +120 and θa – θc = -120 acb (negative) sequence

b) θa – θb = -120 and θa – θc = +120 abc (positive) sequence
