Ans: Asian carp is an unpopular menu item because an Asian Carp can eat an awful lot of sea
scum, and some of it is toxic. The carp are resistant to the toxins, but we are not. Some Asian carp are
hazardous to eat because they have so many algal toxins in their systems. They also have lots of tiny
bones in their meat, which makes them difficult to prepare.

2.      Which person would be most threatened by silver carp in a local water source?

Ans: A water sport enthusiast would be most threatened by silver carp in a local water source.
There is prove that in 2003, a woman jet skier collided with one and broke her nose and a
vertebra. She almost drowned. In 2008, a teenager broke his jaw on one while tubing. Many
others have been injured by these flying logs. Asian carp pose a serious threat to water skiers
and boaters.

Ans: The word resistant in the third paragraph that the Asian carp’s body can withstand the toxins
and other things which would be harmful for us, they are resistant to that.

Ans: The Asian carps are bottom-feeders and they do not go for lures and bait like other fishes,
therefore they are difficult to catch an there is no other possible way to prevent them than to
keep them out. out. The Great Lakes are connected to the Mississippi River through the 28-mile
Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. And if they are shut down there is a chance that the Asian
Carps will not reach the Great Lakes.

6.      How did the Asian carp get to America and why are they a problem? Answer the question
completely. Support your arguments with quotes from the text. Explain the how your
quotes support your arguments.
Ans: Asian carps as the name suggests originated from Asia but in the 1970s, Southern fish
farmers began importing them to help clean their ponds. Asian carp are exceptionally good
cleaners. But they are considered a problem because they did not take long to escape these
ponds because of flooding and reaching the Mississippi River. From there they have followed
their natural tendency to swim upstream. This tendency may lead them into the Great Lakes
and Canada, which would be extremely problematic for fishermen.

7.      What is one lesson that readers can learn from this text? Clearly state the lesson and
explain how this lesson can be learned.

Ans: The one lesson that a reader can learn from this a text is that animals should not be
removed from one region to another as they might die because different places or different
regions have different weathers, or they might become an invading species as we have seen in
this extract. There are many lessons that can be learnt from this extract but according to me
this is the most important lesson that the readers should learn.
