Trial A B C D E 1 2 3 Data and Tabulation

The document presents the results of an experiment to determine the specific gravity of a soil. It provides elevation measurements for 5 points (A, B, C, D, E) over 3 trials. It then calculates the difference in elevation between points and records these in Table 2. Using the elevation differences and a formula, it calculates the specific gravity for each trial, finding values of 0.8125 for Trial 1, 0.8710 for Trial 2, and 1.1481 for Trial 3.

DATA AND TABULATION:

Table 1. Elevations (cm)

TRIAL 1 TRIAL 2 TRIAL 3

BC 7.2 8.0 5.3

CD 4.6 5.3 2.2

DE 4.4 5.2 8.1

Table 2. Difference of Elevation Results (cm)

COMPUTATIONS:

DIFFERENCE OF ELEVATION:

Trial 1 :
AB = B – A BC = B – C CD = D – C DE = E – D

= 17.2 – 18.4 = 17.2 – 10 = 14.6 – 10 = 19.0 – 14.6

AB = 1.2cm or 0.012m BC = 7.2cm or 0.072m CD = 4.6cm or 0.046m DE = 4.4cm or

0.044m

Trial 2 :
AB = A – B BC = B – C CD = D – C DE = E – D

= 20.1 – 18.0 = 18.0 – 10 = 15.3 – 10 = 20.5 – 15.3

AB = 2.1cm or 0.021m BC = 8.0cm or 0.080m CD = 5.3cm or 0.053m DE = 5.2cm or
0.052m

Trial 3 :
AB = A – B BC = B – C CD = D – C DE = E – D

= 20.7 – 15.3 = 15.3 – 10 = 12.2 – 10 = 20.3 – 12.2

AB = 5.4cm or 0.054m BC = 5.3cm or 0.053m CD = 2.2cm or 0.022m DE = 8.1cm or 0.081m

SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF SOIL:

Unit weight of water : Rq ' d :

kN
γ w =9.81 Specific gravity of oil(G oil )
m3

Formula :

0+ ( γ w )( G oil ) ( AB )+ ( γ w ) ( 1 ) ( BC )−( γ w ) ( 1 ) ( CD ) −( γ w ) ( G oil ) ( DE )=0

Trial 1 :

0+ ( 9.81 ) ( G oil ) ( 0.012 )+ ( 9.81 )( 1 ) ( 0.072 )−( 9.81 ) ( 1 ) ( 0.046 )−( 9.81 ) ( G oil ) ( 0.044 )=0

G oil =0.8125

Trial 2 :

0+ ( 9.81 ) ( Goil ) ( 0.021 )+ ( 9.81 )( 1 ) ( 0.080 )− ( 9.81 )( 1 ) ( 0.053 )−( 9.81 ) ( Goil ) ( 0.052 )=0

G oil =0.8710

Trial 3 :

0+ ( 9.81 ) ( G oil ) ( 0.054 ) + ( 9.81 ) ( 1 )( 0.053 )−( 9.81 ) ( 1 )( 0.022 ) −( 9.81 ) ( G oil ) ( 0.081 )=0

Goil =1.1481
